BigStock has always been a steady producer for me, not great not bad. Lately though it has dropped off the face of the earth. I hope it picks back up soon.

Why use the proprietary PSD format? TIF is open format, lossless too, and has about the same size. I have to admit I use zipped TIF (which is more compact). For photos, why should you save layers?  The flat TIF is enough, unless you do illustrations.

I save: the original CR2, the untweaked JPG from cam, and the final TIF with all the edits. From there I can generate the JPGs for upload. I save on external disks, at least 2 copies. On average, I obtain 30 Gig per month like that, that's one extra 1TB disk per year. Considering the price of disks, that's peanuts.

The reason you might want to save the edited copy in layers is in case you want to print the image . . . tweaking while softproofing for a printer's profiles.  You don't really want to print without knowing and correcting for a specific printer's profile.  Not to mention paper profiles.

General Photography Discussion / Archiving - Its still not clear
« on: January 13, 2010, 08:36 »
Like many of you here, for each image I have a jpeg file for uploading, a layered PSD file and the original Raw file archived on multiple locations.  What is not clear to me is what file format should I use for the layered file, either a layered Tiff (16) or the proprietary format of PSD?  One mistake I have been making is not using "Backwards Compatibilty" on my PSD files, thus slowing down Bridge previews among other disadvantages.

From Cambridge In Colour:

http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/archival-photo-backup.htm

Unfortunately, many of the formats used for storing edited photos are also subject to future compatibility issues. Fortunately, this is one area where changing technology can mean you'd like to rework certain images using the latest software and techniques. Just make sure that you also have an archived version of the unaltered original photo.
Overall, the only fail-proof solution is to keep your data up-to-date. Every few years it's a good idea to convert file types that are in danger of becoming obsolete.

I know this has been discussed before but the above quote tells me that it might be unimportant whether a Tiff or PSD is the choice.

Any thoughts from those of you who have thought this through?

For me it was $11.55 with no withholding tax deducted.  As an American living in Germany that is correct.  Happy they got it right.

Featurepics.com / Re: Anyone selling at Featurepics?
« on: January 09, 2010, 06:30 »
I joined them last year because they had higher prices and higher commissions.
Shortly after that they changed both of that, as if trying to compete on price would be the only way to do business.
Never had a single sale on the site. Totally dead. They might as well die, I wouldn't notice. And I wouldn't mind, now as they removed the only reason to really support them (higher prices, higher commissions)...

^^^ with 595 files. So . . . . . . .  595 + 0 = 0

Isn't Globalization wonderful!  If you want to put it into historical context then the free market idea of Adam Smith is the real winner . . .  what we have here is the peasants fighting for the last wild boar in the King's forest . . . .  and every hungry peasant is invited.

Unfortunately no million$ to spare, just a love of what we do and a belief that life is too short ~ regrets are worthless.

Besides what else would we do; I'm pretty much unemployable

I know the feeling after being in the fine art world as a painter for 30 years, . . . so I like your attitude as  an unemployable free thinker.  Your problem is that you have to convince people your site is serious and worth THEIR time to contribute.

The same for me at Yaymicro, during the day they appear . . .  then they disappear . . .  then they appear again . . . on and on and on . . .

They have a little work to do at Yaymicro after the holidays.

General Stock Discussion / Re: trojan horse at Istock

My virus scanner (AVAST) detected a trojan horse so be aware what to do next.

One? Over 300!  :-\ :-\

Thanks for the laugh!

But there is a trojan horse and Avast (free) did abort it from downloading, or at least the IS site.

At least for me the problem shows in this graph (245 images online), I have had some downloads but those numbers are also going down.  I guess the number of online files are growing.

General Stock Discussion / Re: What Future?
« on: December 17, 2009, 16:54 »
For myself its alittle different.  After getting a science degree from university (1971) I took a personal vow to poverty and art (painting), and have been sucessful in both.  For the last year I have been using a camera to satisfy my obsession with imagery, but unlike most of you here I have no love affair with the camera. It seems like a very imperfect machine.  There is one great advantage in Photography . . . . . . .  you don't have the fear and anxiety of the dreaded white canvas!

This tell me that, at least for the next couple of mouths, the smart thing to do is to opt-out at IS until the transfer is complete . . . . .  then opt-in at IS after, if that is your intention.

Does that make sense?.

Here are the groups:

1: you can't get your photos accepted at IS or failed the IS submission test, but you uploaded to StockXpert. We're taking your StockXpert photos.

2: you don't care about subs and opted out of them at IS because you don't want your photos sold for pennies. We're taking your StockXpert photos.

3: You allowed subscriptions, submitted to both sites, supported our partner program on IS and have files on both sites. Your StockXpert photos can go suck eggs, but feel free to re-upload 15 a week for rejection, until you get bored. We appreciate your loyalty and past contributions!  >:(

Well stated, that's it  . . . . . . . say it ain't so, Joe.

Sounds great until I read this:

Run main.exe (or main.py). Select the stock. Enter your username and password for it.

I'm not sure about that . . . . . . . . .

I'm in Group Three, but the part about losing the partner program with our StockXpert port is nothing we haven't already known for at least 6 months now.  I, like many others, also have very few images on istock compared to stockxpert mostly due to the weekly upload cap.  Am I happy about this?  Not really.  Will I be losing a lot of money from this?  Probably hundreds each month.  Is it the end of the world?  Definitely not.

But what of Group four, the one they forgot. I'd like to have my StockXpert photos moved to the new site, like the other people, not be penalized for having an IS account and not be penalized for being opted in for subscriptions and partners at IS. Oh thank you, because I've been working for you and have quality images on IS, I get penalized.

What do they offer for me? "If you had non-duplicated files opted into subscriptions on StockXpert, please feel free to upload them to your existing portfolio on iStockphoto to continue their subscription sales." Oh thanks I can take all the files that are on StockXpert and upload them to IS, 15 a week... where they will be refused.

But people in group one, who aren't on IS - "you do not have content on iStockphoto, your StockXpert content on JIUnlimited will be migrated automatically to the new site.

Squeak, Squeak, Squeak.  ;D

Payback for hard work and being an IS member is to have your StockXpert files ignored in the move. It doesn't seem right?

If I had known this I would have opted out of Partners at IS. That way my StockXpert photos would have been migrated.  ??? I can't understand how they decided to ignore the people who have been supporting their subscription and partner plan in favor of non-IS members?

This tell me that, at least for the next couple of mouths, the smart thing to do is to opt-out at IS until the transfer is complete . . . . .  then opt-in at IS after, if that is your intention.

Does that make sense?.

Bigstock.com / Re: December commission = 0$
« on: December 15, 2009, 09:30 »
Bigstockphoto was always very low earner for me, but I had a payment almost every month. In December I have 0 dls. It has never happen before (I'm here for over 2 years). Looks like BS is slow dying.

Also a goose egg for me this month after a BME last month.  The promise of the SS takeover seems to be waning fast.

After more than 2 months of image pending, my 500+ photos only approved 2... so sad.

OUCH!  I feel your pain.  I stopped uploading months ago.  They don't like enough of my stuff for me to keep interest.

I'm having trouble with the w-9 form as well. I have a business license and an EIN number which I keep putting on the form but they have rejected my w-9 twice.

Same thing happened to me until I supplied the number without spaces.  Try that.

New Sites - General / Re: The 3D Studio - anyway selling there?
« on: December 06, 2009, 04:43 »
Somebody just asked me to comment here so I figured I would...

Our stock photo section took off like wildfire in just the last couple of months and we've had more submissions than we expected in such a short period. That's a good thing and we know many of these new images are from the members here on this forum. So, let me say thank you to those that are getting in on the ground floor with us...we appreciate your early support.

Now, the big question everyone has is on sales, or lack of in some cases, right? Just like we said from the start a couple of months ago, stock photos are new to The3dStudio.com and we never intended to be an istock overnight. We don't intend to ever be an istock for that matter, it's just not what we are about here, but I think our stock sales will see some great increases in the next few months as we ramp up our advertising campaigns.

In the past few weeks we've seen great increases in stock sales and we are very pleased with that trend but that doesn't always translate into 1000 sales for every single seller every month. Part of that is just simple supply and demand and our supply shot up almost overnight and now we are starting to focus on increasing the demand. I can sell 100 images in the next hour but that doesnt mean every photographer will get 10 sales or even 1 from that simply because we have a very large library from many contributors so the sales are more spread out than they worth 1-2 months ago.

Our intent from the start was to focus mainly on getting new contributors at The3dStudio.com for the last few months of 2009. We have been doing that while we continue to improve our stock upload tools, categories, search features, and so on. Weve also added our x-small 400 pixel size for a $2 purchase along with an Extended License option that we think is an industry best and offers something other sites do not. Next up is a very major site design upgrade and this is very much focused on the custom side of the site as we continue to improve their experienceI cant give away too much yet but it will be a much cleaner design, will be wider, and will have increased thumbnail sizes. Its all coming soon.
From there our plan has always been to focus 2010 on bringing in customers and that plan is still 100% on track. We have some various advertising campaigns that will be starting then (some have already started) and this will help us bring in more customers.
I know some people like to wait and see and either wont add any images until they hear of increased sales or maybe they only had a small percentage of their collection until they see an increase. While I understand the logic behind that, the flip side is that the more images we have the larger we become and the faster we can bring in customers. If you have images to add then we would love to get them added, its a very fast process and once youve done that you dont ever have to touch them again. You have nothing to lose but a little bit of your time, and a very small bit at that.

So, I will end this overly long reply with a thank you to those who continue to support us. It will be worth your time in the long run but we arent here to compete against istock, shutter, or any other stock site. Were doing things differently and different can be good if you give it a chance.

As promised the upgrade has been finished, so thank you T3DS.  With 531 images online and 27,653 views and no sales I am hopeful for the future.  The site looks and feels much more user friendly, so lets get on with it . . . .

Take a shot of a popular subject and upload it to any agency, then go to that agency and do a search so that your image shows up amongst many similar others, if your colours look OK you're done, if not adjust your monitor.

You are right . . .  after getting the calibration reasonable corrected.  What drives me crazy is that each site presents the images a little different.  It seems to me that images on SS have slightly more contrast then IS,  and DT kicks up the sharpening which brightens the image . . . .  or am I seeing things?

New Sites - General / Re: photocase.com

Four in my port too.  I've had two downloads .... but NO MONEY.  Not so sure that getting credits for uploading makes a lot of sense.  Turns the site into an "exchange" agency instead of a "sales" agency.  Photographers who need images usually can make their own.  What's the use for all those download credits???    :-\

About the same story here.  One in 15 accepted with a "file sharing" download . . . . .  I am starting to loose interest already, maybe this isn't the site for me.

Software - General / Re: Windows 7
« on: November 30, 2009, 17:06 »
Really extremely useful info about the drivers Denis.  Thank you!

Just as an update, my HP Pavilion Elite arrived.  I spent about 20 hours over three days trying to get it configured with my software, etc., and on support calls because the thing was so buggy.

It kept freezing up at random times, for no apparent reason, along with other strange things like the video card blinking off and then recovering, internet access one day and none the next, etc.  Just a whole lot of issues.

Their support was just awful - their only solution was to keep having me do system recoveries, which of course wiped out 6 hours of work adding software and configuring the thing the way I wanted it.

Finally I returned it.  Googling HP Pavilion Elite with the i7 processor it turns out that apparently they have faulty mother boards.  There is a class action lawsuit filed about it.   I am breathing a big sigh of relief that I sent it back rather than continuing to do system recoveries forever until the return period expired.

After some research I have ordered a Dell XPS 9000.  It appears much better reviewed than the HP.  Keeping my fingers crossed this will solve my speed problems.  Hopefully I will be able to stand looking at the fugly red and white case... ;)

Lisafx

Please let us know how you like the XPS 9000 after you get to spend some time with it . . . that is, if you indeed settle for that machine.  My computer is starting to complain every time I have CS3 and Bridge open at the same time . . . . . .  boy, this computer seemed like a real monster just a few years ago! I remember bragging about having 1.5 gigs of RAM.
