Alamy.com / Re: Alamy - a new low
« on: February 26, 2011, 04:31 »

Newspaper and volume discounts? Since I haven't had one of these lowball sales, I don't know what they are.
I haven't found the answer yet and I'm getting tired. Maybe someone else has the accurate information?

On your 'My Account' page, scroll down until you get to 'Additional Revenue Opportunities'. Right above 'Find a Photographer', you'll see a link to the UK Newspaper screen. Click on that, and you'll get an explanation, and the choice of opting in or out.
The info says:
Alamy UK newspaper scheme

    * As a contributor you can opt in or out of the UK newspaper scheme.
    * Selections you make will apply to all of your images (both RF and RM [including RM - E]).
    * You are automatically opted in unless you choose to opt out using this page.
    * You can opt in or out at any time.

Alamy are negotiating contracts with a number of UK newspapers, the specific details of each agreement will differ from one company to the next.
Important Points

This may result in average prices lower than previously attained. This may involve Alamy being paid a monthly fee. This revenue will then be divided per image downloaded in that month. (number of downloads are capped for each scheme) RM (including RM - E) images remain as rights managed and can only be used once for the following uses by a newspaper: Print only, web only, web and print combined
Opt In Opt Out

These options refer to the specific schemes mentioned above, these schemes are only in operation with a select group of customers. Opting out will result in those customers not seeing your images. Opting out does not act as a general licence restriction and no restrictions will be set on your images as a result of you opting out.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Zoonar & Alamy
« on: February 25, 2011, 16:21 »
Hi
Has any contributor to Zoonar ever had any of your images accepted through their "partnership" with Alamy. My oldest image submitted by Zoonar to Alamy was 11 Jan 2011 and is still not evaluated. Is the "partnership" a hoax or does Alamy take this long to evaluate images?

If the partnership is real, did anyone ever had sales through Zoonar at Alamy?
Alamy usually has a turnaround of c1-2 days. If it gets up to a week, it usually means you've had a rejection.
I know nothing of Zoonar, so can't answer that specifically.
Note that if a sale is made through an Alamy 'agent' you get 40% rather than 60%. I'm guessing, but don't know, that this would apply to Zoonar.

« on: February 25, 2011, 16:19 »

Yeah I guess the Editorial must make them spend a lot of time, but I read that it was different reviewers that inspect Editorials. Yes mine are Illustrations, and no I am not exclusive as I just got approved in iStock. I was used to the 2-3 days review wait on other sites I figured iStock would be the same ;)
I'm guessing the editorial photo inspectors have been co-opted from the ranks of the photo inspectors.
The vector inspectors are different people.

I just did a search on TS which returned 0 results, and a suggestion that I should try Getty, as there were 607 matching images.
Not a bleat about iStock, where there happen to be over 7,000 matching files.
So, not directing customers to the widest choice, which would probably be best for them. Directing them to where the profit is 80%.

Are you exclusive to istock? Exclusives get a faster inspection time. Recently, some of my files have been getting approved in hours after submission. But some files take longer... a lot longer. I would say the average time these days for me would be a day and 2 max.
I nearly choked on my tea there, then realised you're probably talking abut illustrations, since that's what the OP asked about. I've got a load of photos uploaded on the 17th which aren't locked for inspection yet. I guess they've had a huge influx of editorial images which people had lurking on their HDs.

Off Topic / Re: UK liability insurance
« on: February 25, 2011, 08:19 »
So I had the reply for MorganRichardson saying they don't offer the other cover without covering the gear. My gear is covered until the third week in October, expensively, new-for-old; home-and-abroad, so I don't want to double up.
I guess if they'd wanted the business, they could have suggested covering just one piece of my equipment to get round that issue.
I've had no reply from aaduki or GloverHowe, and I emailled all three first thing on Tuesday morning, so I'm guessing they're not interested for the same reason.
My husband found a company which offered insurance for outdoor sculpture he was involved in. Their rates are extremely prohibitive and definitely unsustainable.
Any other UK suggestions?
Tx.

Not sure what happens when Opted In?  I'm not even sure how to find that option. My StockXpert images were transferred to Thinkstock.  How can I tell if iStock is continuing to add images?

Does being opted in mean that ALL my iStock images are available at Thinkstock ... for 28 cents?

Not really as dumb as I seem.  Just that I started with iStock using DeepMeta to Fetch Data.  Seldom login to the site itself.
I think if you're opted in you can still choose for each image. (certainly the option is there or exclusives, though that's iStock OR TS)
Not that I'm encouraging such an action.

Clearly he's lying. If he agreed with everything, why should there be any need for "fighting"? Why should he have to thank KK for "fighting"? I see he also thanked someone for a "battle" in the Vector Vetta thread.
So again I ask, if iStock has done nothing to "disappoint" why the need for battles?
Surely in any business (except one-person - maybe), there will always be 'robust discussion' until some agreement/compromise/solution can be found?

And to everyone who has been opted in to the partner program and is getting a raise as a result of those who have stood firm against it:  You're welcome. ;)
And don't forget to thank us for fighting so hard for your raise.

I guess we now know why the constant forced grab for content from the recent 'lypses for the PP.
Kudos to you for actually getting them to state the enforced content grab.
After the Japan bash, you'd have thought they'd have been right upfront with this one, but even after you questioned it several times, they dithered and swithered about whether they were actually going to admit it.
I guess all the woo-wayers will still be in the bucket, though.
But at least you forced 'fully informed consent'.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Vetta Illustrations and Video. Who's in?
« on: February 24, 2011, 08:39 »
I am an exclusive illustrator at istock (since 2007). I clicked the allow Vetta collection. I'm now having doubts. On one hand, I don't want to lose placement (even more) in the Best Match Search. On the other, I don't want my files priced higher, so not to deter buyers and I don't want to earn an even lower percentage. What does everyone else think?
depends on your current %age, I guess. But it seems that some people at least will only get a 5% raise in what they gain (but with loads more to iStock) while probably losing sales due to the hiked up prices.
If you're on a lower percentage rate, it might work for you.

FWIW, my only 2 sales today have been one from August 07 with no previous dls and one from July 07 with 2 previous dls. Not connected.
Probably just coincidence. I hope - the last time I sold two old non-sellers, it was a bizarre part of the fraud!

Used to work with:
'name surname'
but today I don't see my images too.

I just used "Real Name" and it worked as it always did  ??? Maybe it's double vs. single quotes?
I forgot the double quotes.  ::)
Tx!

OT: How can I know exactly how many of my photos are ACTUALLY on the PP site (Thinkstock)  ?
IIRC you can put your real name into the search box.

Nop. Doesn't work.
Sorry. I'm pretty sure it used to. I double checked with an iStocker's image I knew was there. Couldn't find it by his real name or user name (but the image is still there, triple check).
Hopefully someone else knows.

given the new rules about how RCs and royalties are calculated, I can't imagine I'll be creating any more stock illustrations.
I've been wondering about that since September. I wonder how many people are just focussing on their core medium instead of spreading their skills and content, and how much that might be impacting iStock.
It was a totally unfair move, and I say that as a one-medium iStocker. It has certainly put me right off the idea of learning video seriously (i.e. to iStock standards) which was one of my intentions when buying the 5DMk2.

This is the attack on Shutterstock!!!!
Indeed, I was just about to add the following to my earlier post, but will add it here.
At first, I was happy with the idea that we (!!) would be stealing sales from SS, but with everything that's happened at iStock since then, I'd rather there were other agencies and not one monopoly that could then screw us even harder.

they increase the payout now after you joint they will cut paid..this is their game
I was thinking exactly that as well.
Is it possible to opt out after one has already opted in?
If so, when they lower commissions once again, there could be a mass opt out done in protest.
Yes, I was in at first and only uploaded old non-sellers, most of which were only available at Medium. I opted straight out again when they mass emailled their big buyers suggesting they move over to TS, which made a mockery of what they had told us - that it was a 'new market' they were seeking. At that time, I think I got out within two weeks, a bit longer than the promised '10 days'. Since then, people have had all manner of problems, running on for months, if they want out (or IN!!!).

14071
...  at TS, you get $.25...there is no chance of ever earning more than that

You'd better get a refund from that Crystal Ball course you did!  ;D

Sorry if my measurements don't confirm your own assumption that your work isn't selling because of the nasty best match.
Whatever made you assume I was thinking that?

Because of your whining comments earlier in the thread;

"It's been months that new files have been sinking like stones in the best match - maybe even as far back as F5, but definitely since Nov."
That wasn't whining. It was observed fact, though I guess 'sinking like stones' is a simile rather than subjective reporting.

I don't see any change at all. If I view the first 100 images of my own port, sorted by best match, then about 30% are images uploaded within the last 6 months and have sales. I think the difficulty in new images gaining sales is just down to how many images there are for the buyer to choose from nowadays.
There's a difference in how best match works within our own port and how it works sitewide. Don't shoot the messenger!

"If you get cold feet, you can cancel your Exclusive contract with 30 days notice, after providing us with a reason ("it's not you, it's me"). And we'll always take you back, with a 90 day reinstatement waiting period."
Whereas the balance of probability will be "it's not me, it's you."
