Alamy.com / Re: Alamy Demographic Survey
« on: November 19, 2021, 10:09 »
"but also closer to home, we want to make sure we are operating in an ethical and inclusive way."

What does this mean?  What defines whether you are or are not operating in an ethical and inclusive way?  Your contributor base is your contributor base.  The only way I can see meeting some criteria of "ethical and inclusive" is if you could tweak search results by, say, ethnicity, which sort of fits into that equity silo.   But to do that you'd have to know by contributor their ethnicity. So according to your post, that approach is out. Outside of that, how do you use these data from the survey to "make sure" you are operating in an ethical and inclusive way?

So let's say a customer is interviewing you and says, what percentage of women artists make up Alamy, because that's important to us.  You say, well, it's about 40%. The customer says, that's not good enough, we want 60% before we work with companies like yours.  What is Alamy going to do about that statistic?  Fire male contributors to meet that metric? Invest in a campaign to attract more female artists? I mean, if it is viewed as unethical or not inclusive enough for the customer (or Alamy) what is Alamy's countermeasure?
Why isn't it enough to say that there is no barrier to the 'category' of people can apply to supply Alamy so long as their photos meet their standards?
The only thing they could do to make sure they have the 'right' mix  ::) would be to make applicants fill in these details, then reject those who don't tick enough 'diversity' boxes. How would you then make sure people weren't lying?
What if a buyer said, "I only want to buy from suppliers who are X and Y and come from Z."

But the main thing (as mentioned already above) is how can  you claim to be 'ethical' while selling files for low prices and scraping off 60%?
What would you say if a customer asked  you that? "We do it because we have all the power. Suppliers are free to leave."?

I assume they want to show what a diverse contributor base they have and use that as a marketing strategy?  Or something.
That's certainly their story, and they're sticking to it.

Besides, there's the ridiculous environmental cost:
"75 kWh of electricity for one NFT
Thats the same amount of electricity consumed by the average UK home in one week!"
and
In an effort to explain why Kazakhstan is considering imposing restrictions on new cryptocurrency mining operations, the Ministry of Energy told local media that data centers minting digital coins use 5 megawatts (MW) of electricity each hour. Just a single mining facility burns an average of 3.6 million kilowatts (kW) a month, the department stated, noting that the amount equals the consumption of 24,000 homes.
https://jacklowe.com/2021/10/24/this-is-your-nft-wake-up-call

So I'll double down on my resounding no: it's environmental lunacy, and for nothing at all.

Seems to be a Brit thing atm. PC gone mad.
When I signed up for my current level for an evening class in Spanish (on Zoom), I got an email to tell me that I couldn't enter for credit if I didn't fill out a very similar form, listing disabilities, gender identity, sexual preferences etc. Total insanity, as most of it, except some disabilities, would have no impact at all on me being able to complete the course and do the exams.
Never got that in any previous year.

I binned Alamy's email.

It's a valid enough question, though I'm personally not interested.
But your title is a non-sequitur, as it wouldn't be microstock in that case.

Very surprised you're doing so badly, Jo Ann. Your portfolio there is so much nicer than mine. I have, admittedly, c2x the portfolio size, but I made $250 gross by early Sept. That can only mean that as is often said on their forum, UK editorial is their bread and butter1: unless, of course, you have the same pics elsewhere. As I'm still iS exclusive for RF, I have a different RM port on Alamy.
1Though a lot of these are sold to newspapers or websites at a heavily discounted rate.

My ten year graph is here, as of yesterday. One little sale today makes the sales volume equal to last year.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/f1kiacq90i19b92/Alamy.jpg?dl=0

Of course, although the gross revenue is up slightly on last year, the net will be considerably lower due to their grabbing of an extra 20%.

As I've often said, my net income from Alamy is considerably lower than I earn from iStock (with fewer pics on iS), even nowadays, though as the pics are different, it's not a direct comparison.

« on: November 05, 2021, 06:34 »
I got mine direct from DACS on Sept. 30th.  Wonder if Alamy might have found more and got me more?

I claim mine directly. However:

For sure, Alamy will have more details and will know exactly which sales can be claimed, plus they might (?) even get ISBNs from the buyers (I have no idea).

Another unknowable, but it could be the case, is that Alamy could put in all claims as a bulk, thus getting into a higher payment band, then divvying that higher payment pro rata.

I'll do that, thanks.

And set up reminders to chase it up every four weeks if you don't get the sale report.

So when should I contact Alamy about sale being not reported. I found one of my images on Buzzfeed, article is from June 27th. So it's now been more than 4 months and still not reported?

Make your first report now.

"Revenue at PA Media Group in 2020 was up by a quarter on the year before despite challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. ...
... The group put the increase in revenues partly down to its acquisition of Alamy in February of last year, which took it into the stock imagery market for the first time. "

NB: that was even before their commission cuts, but not good enough for the greedy b*stards.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: editorial photos but commercial use
« on: October 27, 2021, 20:44 »
Hi everyone, yesterday a customer msg me asked me regarding the photos that i selling on stock agency...this photos are editorial license on stock agency, and she hope can directly buy from me and dont wan go thru stock agency and use that photo on commercial use, is it possible? Thanks
Are they offering you a legal contract in which they accept all risks of an editorial photo being used commercially?
Otherwise run as fast as you can in the opposite direction.

Even if they offer you such a contract, think about the particular image and if there's any risk your reputation would come under fire.

Some 'editorial' pics might have very little risk, depending on usage. E.g., a general touristic scene used on e.g. a travel poster. (IANAL)

Caveat vendor.

21st and got an email about it.

Check that you haven't got to redo your tax interview, if you're outwith the US but in a country which has a tax treaty. I had to redo mine last month.

If you wanted to be write a more useful article you could explain how Alamy search works,
Pick me, pick me!

Any word or phrase in the caption or keywords can be combined with any other word or phrase in the caption or keywords and appear in a search.
Individual words can be taken from one comma-separated phrase and added to any other word from any other phrase. How high random word/phrase combinations appear in a search depends on the size of the search and the algorithm which is in use at the time.

Just curious here, you say: "it takes up to a year to see your first sale".

Why is that? Your photo is worth while or it's not. Why should it take one year waiting time to see your first sale? I have my best sales within the first month for new photo's and then some pictures will keep on selling.

But in which world would the logic be that the same photo with Alamy does not get sold in the first year and then starts selling?

You don't get told about sales for at least six weeks, except for personal use, as far as I know and have been told. I don't sell Live News, but they have a wait of some weeks, but are more likely to have them seen & reported on publication.

You can't believe anything you read, and neither can I!
On Friday I had a photo zoomed and sold, and it was for an editorial website, so the above was duff gen.  ::)

I've had very few 'relatively fast notices of sales' from Alamy, i.e. hearing of them within a year of upload, even of files which went on to get repeat sales.

243
Their 'chasing up' of undeclared sales is patchy at best, and you can wait months - even when it's an established client with an 'account manager' - and often needs repeated chasing up on your part, and you can lose out, e.g.:
1. Their current sale price is less than would have been the case when the photo was bought. Client pays lower price.
The client has gained by trying to cheat. Instead, they should be charged the full 'rack rate', especially repeat offenders.

2. The client 'disappears' over the six months or more they have in credit and the money never comes.

3. The image was used when your rate was 50%, but not chased up, and even if you chased it up while your rate was still 50%, you'll still only get 40% if the payment is made after the date your rate changed.

4. Refunds can be made at least 18 months after the sale was made. Probably more.

5. You'd think misuses would be easier to chase up with RM files, but not, it seems, at Alamy.  :(

All the above have happened to me. I'm sure others can pitch in with other disadvantages.

244
Big sales do get reported from Alamy (but remember, most people quote gross on their forum, unless they state otherwise), but it's a long time since I had a three-figure sale there, even gross. My biggest single sales for the past several years, as well as my highest overall annual and monthly sales for ever have been via iStock - even nowadays when iS is for me a small fraction of its former earnings. Different port on both, RM on Alamy. Some tiny-value RM sales on Alamy which are only slightly different from RF uses (maybe limited to 30 years, or 'web use only' - in fact as some of these sales would need ELs on iS, I'd earn more there.

Imagine one of those beast's farts? Then imagine dozens of those beasts farting after a hearty feed. That's some serious gas being pumped into the environment.
Yebbut very little methane compared to ruminants according to the study whose abstract is here:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24193495
Bottom line: "It is concluded that the contribution of monogastric* animals to the global methane emission is negligible, as it only represent about 5% of the total methane emission by domestic and wild animals of 80 Tg per year. "
* In this study: rat, horse, pig, monkey, baboon, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, giant panda, goose, turkey and chicken.

(the mosquito kills more people)
<pedant mode>
Anopheles mosquitoes are the unwitting vector of the malaria parasites, and it's the latter which can kill us or make us ill.
More info than you probably ever wanted to know:
https://www.cdc.gov/malaria/about/biology/index.html

But indeed, when my pupils asked me what the most dangerous animal I'd seen on my safaris was, I always answered 'mosquitoes', before numbing them with the qualification.   ;)

Title should be altered to reflect that the hippos in question are not in their natural distribution range.

OP in the typical Internet bait headline, we should be used to that after being pounded with them, all day, every day.

But a small fact: The hippo is responsible for more human fatalities in Africa than any other large animal. (the mosquito kills more people) Male hippos actively defend their territories which run along the banks of rivers and lakes. Hippos can run at speeds of over 20 miles an hour and they have enormous jaws which host up to 20 inch canines.

Right, Escobar's hippos are a threat because they aren't there naturally.

More than that, if a hippo is out of water grazing, and you get between them and water, they might panic about their escape route being cut off and charge you. You get reminded constantly if you're staying at a lodge where the hippos graze on the lawn at night.

Even if images are placed under Rights Managed, Alamy is allowing lots of freedom to the buyer. Wonder if these "In perpetuity" licenses mean Alamy is going to ditch Rights Managed altogether?
That was one of several questions which I emailled to the MD at the time of this year's contract change. It was the only one she did not address.
