poor microtards.

RM can pay 20$ as it can pay 2000$ depending on many factors.
if you sell in third world countries dont expect more than 30$ for instance.

if you sell a double page editorial expect at least 200$ up to 400$.

and if you sell for Getty you can go up to the 1000s of $.

@melastmohican :

Alamy is a good start, then there are many specialized agencies depending on
what you shoot.

was at Alamy looking for 'mumbai beggar' and 'elephant indonesia', don't see no elephant or beggars,  only bulls

<...>Stocksites are like Ebay and do not own the goods only act as a merchant<...>
no, stocksites aren't like eBay:
* eBay is the tool, but every purchase is a transaction between the seller (not eBay) and the buyer. Yes, eBay takes commission from the seller, but there is no sale contract between eBay and the buyer
* stocksites do sell to the buyer, not the photographers. There is sale transaction between the buyer and stocksite, not between buyer and photographers.

This makes it fundamentally different - as stocksites do sell something, they are responsible for what they sell.

Exactely what I was about to reply, Thanks Miklav

Yes, excellent point Miklav

There are so many photographers "waiting" for job charging 100$/h excluding everything.  If thats what they call good business. Feel free to continue.

You propably have no clue about real life photography profession. $100/h (I charge more than that for studio work) isn't really that much if you pay for your equipment (real pros have even backup of almost everything), software, taxes, pension, marketing, rents, accounting. And only a part of work is billable hours. You might charge $100/h but get $25/h in average in your own pocket.

I think most of microstockers would earn less than $10 hour if they really did their maths.

I don't think microstock is sustainable form of photo business as it is. Something needs to happen. I'm seeing some form of transition going on.
I already see "happy snappers" complaining it's too difficult to get in some of the sites. It's not too hard to get in, they are just too bad photographers. I think soon the stock business is back to the pros. If RPI falls drastically from current level the images get too expensive to produce -> the prices have to go up or the amount of incoming images have to be decreased substantially.

Hear hear ! one heart to Perry for this one  8)

In one of the old thread lee torrens and batman were discussing the ultimate car.
I think they will like this one. Much spiffier than the Lambo with Armani interiors that Lee mentioned. This one's a Ferrari with truly bat mobile qualities that even a non batman fan would die for.

Enjoy , and stop wagging your tongue  8)

General Stock Discussion / Re: Prices dont need to go down
« on: May 23, 2009, 08:51 »
The only subs site I like is SS, as they have lots of buyers and pay me 38 cents.  They also sell far more EL's than istock.  At the moment I have stopped uploading to crestock, as 25 cents is too low.  I wont opt in with istock and in the future I will probably opt out of StockXpert subs.  If subs commissions don't increase, I will move away from the subs sites.  Perhaps people can copy my photos and sell them for 25 cents but I would rather flip burgers than join them.

Good thinking!

Just one small detail:
5 minutes image or good snapshot can be sold as sub.
5 hours image or very good taken photo can be sold on expensive places.

Just add that to your consideration... Makind difference in production makes difference in micro and macro images.

milinz, madelaide, etc..
when you say opt out, you only mean item 7 of Stockxpert, right? you still opt in for ext lic and partner licensing. is that correct?
as for the other sites, you really cannot opt out on subs with Dreamstime, Fotolia,,etc..

310
Another thing I wonder. Do these crooks find only little people or not so big sellers ?
lisafx is a big seller too, relatively speaking, but why do we not hear about Yuri ,etc..
having this problem. There has to be a problem or else SS would not make this topic known.
I wonder if this is like the same with credit card companies not admitting there is a problem, that people like Yuri do have that problem but don't say it. Or is it that the thieves feel they could get away if they don't try it on people like Yuri. Simply because they know he has the clout and connections to stop them.

311
It  makes good sense, but in a real world, it may not be as possible as we like it to be. What I mean is, for every one of you who opted out, there is probably what? 50, 100 , ??? people willing to settle for 25 cents, and able to clone your work.
As someone else said in another thread, it's not rocket science. It 's generic images,
and the micro stock sites know that.

312

...............  Most people who submit to microstock never even make a payout.  Of the ones who do make it to payout, most will never earn more than a few hundred a month.  .............................
............
The "get rich quick (or buy a vacation home in Spain) selling your snapshots online" thing is a myth.

This is not easy money.  At all.

Ouch, the harsh reality. Micro stock IS big business.  :o

313

.............One idiot got a hold of my image in full res and used it on his web site (in a smaller size). Unfortunately Google and Yahoo were indexing the file so the entire www community had free access to the high-res image. People started using it as backgrounds for their ebay auctions etc. I almost had a heart attack.

So that means that person actually bought your image , for what? 25 cents, a sub, a buck, then turned around to use it illegal?  How nice, and you probably thought you had a sale.
Hmm ! ::)

314
One thing that bothers me is that all we can do is to stop the image from being used.  There is no chance we will receive any compensation for someone having committed a crime.

That's true too. It's little consolation. I wonder why the stock sites don't do anything other than this  ???

315
btw , who is pieman ???

Lobo.  He is known for having a love of pies.

Not in the "American Pie" sense though.  ;)

But we could start that rumor.  ;D

lobo the wolf? when he's coming?

316
click_click , you say : What can you do? Move your stuff to the trads...

But what good is that going to do? they won't sell there, would it?

318
Yet no one mentions the garbage that is on the SS forum.

You're barely on iStock after yelling like a drama queen over all other sites that didn't let you go, and you already got the "right" istock attitude. Congrats, but I think I'll ploink you. Yack.

ANCIENT "CHINESE" SECRET...
polishing them rice bowl, la!   ;D

319

May I dare to disagree?

Probably there is not much specific discussion on the SS forums, but there has been enough discussion about threads being closed and even contributors banned for their activity on site forums of other agencies (DT, FT).
So the criticism exists on this great forum here, it is not only focused on Istock.
Maybe these other forums don't lend them as well to such a satiric view - and maybe that is due to the fact, that no other site has such a huge number of exclusive contributors, who defend and applaude almost every move of "their" agency on the agency's forum.

And about the rejections, just look in the current discussions on DT, there are many people complaining. Again, it's not all about Istock.

To me it just seems (but correct me if I'm wrong) that some Istock exclusives are obviously only interested in discussions about Istock. And so they miss similar discussions about other agencies.

So I would disagree with whatalife as well, Istock is not "the favorite target", it is one target amongst others.

And yes, where I do agree: If they weren't that big in the business, there would be a lot less discussions.

Let's just say that IStock is one mother of  a dysfunctional family

320

Of course it's something new.  Otherwise why would they start it in August?  It would already be happening, right?

Right now through StockXpert, as you know, we are getting .30 sub commission and 30% on PPD sales on the photos.com/jui sites.  Based on the highlighted statement above, they are evidently planning to reduce even that modest commission.

The writing on the wall is starting to become pretty clear for both exclusives and independents who submit to Getty sites.  All that happened was they tried to toss the frogs into the boiling water and they jumped out.  This time around they are wisely placing the frogs in the cool pot of water and slowly turning up the heat.

AND based on the latest bit of counter comments to catastrophe's hilarious thread on IS,
there are still a lot of happy froggies  :D
... mostly old ones, though  ;)

321
I remember my first shot of microstock, and at that time it was when "Atilla" was the mother of all rejections. It was quite a shock to the system for me, but I also met someone through a forum who taught me one thing about rejections, "don't look, if you can't take it... just submit and keep submitting elsewhere , not just istock "
This way, your port will increase and you waste less energy getting miffed by rejections.

322
It would be funnier if half the people in this thread weren't "new members" but hilarious all the same.

But I have to say... I do miss the days when nearly every thread contained a random exclamation of "BOOBIES!!!!"

 :D

hmm, nice,
i loveeee "Boobies"   ;)

323
Hahahaha! GREAT! And we even have someone who's category by him self! :D

Catastrophe, are you  sure you can use SJLOCKE without an Intellectual Property release? How did this get passed the reviewer?  ;D
