Veer / Re: Veer Holding PhotoOps, Just Like istockalypses
« on: November 30, 2010, 10:15 »
Wouldn't spending the money on reviewers, to get new photos through the q much faster, benefit even more contributors, buyers AND the company? That's just not me being jealous or dishing out sour grapes, that complaint comes from a lot of contributors, big and small.

Just sayin.

More isolated on white shots? No these are a win-win for both the contributors and the companies.  Also must say the way Veer went about it was much better then istock.

It's a good business move for both Veer and iStock. Both company should have more of these events.

Dont be foolish!  were all in the same boat, whats the point in deactivating?  youve put down a lot of work, long hours, etc, etc.  What happend at IS,  is the hallmark of whats going, probably to happen, sooner or later with all the sites.
Its not as it used to be, you know, today investors, bankers, etc, owns creative outlets and thats the problem.

First, we're not all in the same boat; we independents are being treated particularly badly, even as iStock adjusts its other programs to at least partially compensate exclusives for their loss of royalty percentage.  And secondly, what happens at iStock will only influence the rest of the market to the degree we permit it by quiet acceptance.  I won't accept it, and I hope all the other agencies show a better long term business sense.  I'm continuing to delete a few images a day from iStock.  Granted, it's still the worst performers that I'm removing, but once those are gone it'll be the small money earners and then the medium and eventually my best sellers.  I won't stop until either they're all gone or iStock's current or new owners treat my work with more respect.

Question, why are you only deleting your non-sellers or worst performers. Wouldn't it better if you just deleted your top sellers?  I mean if you're going to take a stand deleting the top sellers would really show them.

Photo Critique / Re: Help me pick 3 pics for iStock

Just took a look at your Port and I would go with "Yellow Flower & Bug, Jaundice Newborn, and Sailboat in Sunset". The other stuff in your port looks to much like snapshots. Your best bet would be to head over to the IS critique forum post 100% link to images. I'm sure a few people will help you out.

Hope this helps.

I also wonder if people in the industry are positive about footage, why are DT so late getting in to that market?  From my sales, Pond5 are ahead of all the micros, shutterstock could do a lot better.

And I don't think any of the sites link footage and stills taken of the same subject.  I would of thought that could be useful to buyers.

Very useful to buyers!

Nice! Thanks for the info

Im not too sure I believe this any longer, buyers going by the thousands, etc. I mean lets face it, if buyers really were abandening ship by the thousands, wouldnt it stand to reason Getty would become mildly worried, theyre accoutable to higher chiefs. Im pretty sure that if it was any truth in this we would have heard of some compromize or something?

Yep! only wishing thinking by some on this forum.

stats
What I read from these stats is that the number of contributors (exclusives as well as non-exclusives), the number of files online and the sales have been growing.

That how I would read those stats, what are you seeing Lisa?

Ich glaube, Szakaly, Du bist dort, wo ich her bin. Und umgekehrt!  :D

Und wo bist Du ursprnglich her, Eyedesign, wenn ich fragen darf?

Ich komme aus New York.

117
Deutschsprachig, in Deutschland, aber nicht deutsch!  :)

Ich auch!

118
I'd say between 200-300, the charts don't really tell us much. There could be a newer guy sitting at position 1200 selling like crazy, it would take him years to climb the chart, but he might still make the 40%. I'm at 318 and will make it.

Bingo!!

119
I didn't say 500. I said a bit under 500, think somewhere around 420-475.

120
A little under 500.

Ridiculous, there are only 800 or so diamonds to begin with.

No more ridiculous then some of the other numbers being kick around here.

121
How many diamond exclusives do you reckon are on $80k+? There can't be very many.

Offhand, I'd say 300+. Probably closer to 400 than 300.

From where I'm sitting I'd say that is an overestimate :-\

Definitely! Somewhere between 70 - 100 would be my guess, probably on the lower end of that scale. Working from my own data (as an independent) you'd probably need to be averaging something like 2200 sales per month.
A little under 500.

Lighting / Re: How much to charge?
« on: July 09, 2010, 02:07 »
I guess that I should have mentioned that he initially asked me to photograph all of his furniture for him.

Photography is a PART-TIME thing for me. I build websites for a living and have no desire to get locked into some long-term thing with anyone.

I'm the one that suggested I set up his studio for him so that I would not be required to take all of the photos. However, I hadn't thought so much about post. I've recently recommended another developer to help him with his website and that person should be able to handle post-production for him.

I was just looking for everyone's ballpark figure for setting up the studio. I already have a studio at home (with strobes, not hot lights). The reason that I suggested hot lights for him is to get the large depth of field required for furniture.

Thanks for all of the ideas and any other suggestions welcome!

So, as I understand your post "Photography is a PART-TIME thing " and you didn't want to get stuck shooting his stuff.  To get around shooting the stuff yourself you suggested he setup a studio and shoot the furniture himself.  He also had work for you in what I'm guessing is your full time job "web development", but for that you suggested he hire another developer. Question, why not just suggest he buy the book "Website Development For Dummies" so that he could do that himself?

I completely agree with you Eyedesign, but there are much better images with emotions on microstock than these we see in hot shots collection. Not everyone is taking pictures of business people and apples over white.

Agree Dreamframer that not everyone is shooting businesspeople or Apples on white, but to many people still are shooting these subjects.  I like the first image from the above post but the other one looks way to fake and microstock like.  Compare that one to the shot of the kid in Hot Shot and for me the hot shot image feels more real.
