General Stock Discussion / Re: Stats on Microstock

If MB or Yuri want to be the clearinghouse for X number of photographers and take their cut, that's "allowed", sure.  But the payout levels at IS are what they are, and as far as placement, there are too many factors contributing to say "well, obviously, this person has a 'love' factor of 10" or something.

I'll confirm what Bob is saying. Search placement would seems to be something thats on the table. That is if you have a big Port with good selling power.

Yes! not great but much better. Best sellers are now push forward again and today I'm getting more sells of images older than 24 months.

Actually, M(asculine) exposure is overrated, except when it's necessary. This spoof is one very laborious joke.

From the thread "Increase in non-exclusive files in results?"

Aug 2011

"Here's a sober search ... 4072 total files 2505 of those are exclusive yet only 32 of the top 200 in a best match search are exclusive."
One thing you can count on like death and taxes, each week will bring a new best match change.

I've been using Hensels products for over 15 years, and have used the Integra Pro 2 for the last 2. The quality of the built is great and they give a very clean light. If you went with the Hensels I don't think you'll be disappointed.

..... don't forget they were first and are still the biggest.....

Is this still the case? I thought all indicators were that they have now fallen into second place in terms of site traffic?
Their collection size is certainly not the biggest either, so I think by any variable we are privy to this is no longer true.
(we can obviously speculate about profitability, but as by their own admission they have been operating with an unsustainable business model and given the fall in traffic I would assume they aren't doing too great there anymore either)

My unclear use of "biggest" was supposed to refer to company turnover/revenue, contributor payout and as well as overall clout - I've seen nothing so far disputing those.

Alexa Traffic Rank

Istock

Global Rank = 325
US Rank    = 243

Huge drop at the end of 2010 (Nov-Dec) for istock in pageviews.
What cause the drop? Most here are hoping it's because buyers are
leaving. I would think if that was true we would see a different type
of chart.

Shutterstock

Global Rank = 374
US Rank    = 419

Most people here seems to being using the measurement of Pageviews/User to show that Shutterstock is ahead. I think comparing
Bounce rate is also interesting.

Some more reading.

Yes and no J. Veer, Dreamstimes, and 123RF all have some type of price slider or collection Selector. I think if a site has more than one price point or collection you'll find they have someway to filter the search. The question is if istock's price slider/collection selector to hard for a buyer to understand.

I can not believe this, why are people here trying to explain the technical ins and outs of this slider, pulls it, clicks it, etc. Do they really believe that we have a technical issue, problem with the slider? ITS NOT THE SLIDER IN ITSELF!,  its what it represents. The brainwaves behind the slider, is meant to try and steer away buyers from the cheapo base-files and prefferably buy exclusive /agency/ Vettas. i.e.  to steer the revenues in a certain direction.
Thats OK, actually, its a business after all, if it wasnt at the expense of some 20K non exclusive members whom then got thrown a bone called Photo+. knowing fully well it was all going to end up in the gigatic dump called, TS.

Do you really see it as a tool to "try and steer away buyers from the cheapo base-files and prefferably buy exclusive /agency/ Vettas" Four dots = Agency files, not in your budget range click three dots = Vettas, still not in your budget click two or one dots. Would it be better with little $ signs maybe, but I'm not really seeing the big problem.

I am not saying there is not amazing talent at ShutterStock! There are a lot of people there who have a lot more talent than me! I am saying that for a Diamond level to drop exclusive status is a big deal. He is probably going from 40% to 18% Ouch.

Big deal that a person drops exclusive status, not really! Is he dropping from 40% to 18% maybe! Maybe he was already below 40%. Maybe he got a better offer for his content from another site. The only person that would know the answer to this is the Artist. As he wrote "changing my distribution plan" sounds like he's a smart guy that has a business to run. The RC system Penalizes artist with mix portfolio so if artist with a mix portfolio drop exclusive status I fully understand. As Sue said "Seems like a very calm and calculated decision. "

I wish him Luck!

jjneff, work of his quality is already on ShutterStock and another other stock site that you search. As helix said with a mix portfolio I would think he's made a sound business decision.

Just did a search using iStock and Shutterstock both are about the same. Shutterstock may be a bit faster but not by much.

I don't participate in the monthly sell threads, but I'm seeing solid sells from istock. Both money and downloads are up over last year.  Most of the other contributors I've talked to in the last three months are reporting the same. The ones that have reported flat sells still seem to be happy because overall money earned is still on the raise.

Don has some very good points.

No, for all the reasons gostwyck stated.

Used to be, way back in the mists of time, that inspectors used to give a file an initial rating. That stopped five or six years ago. You could see the rating, but I can't remember how. Whether they give files any rating now, I don't know.
inspectors can still and do give initial rating, but I don't think they have anything to do with best match placement.

44
When an inspector approves a file, the also assign a "rating" from 1 to 5 to the file (not to be mixed up with the regular "user rating" which don't affect anything).
This rating has a great affect on best match placement.

You know this to be a fact or are you just guessing ?

45
The only person that needs to feel threaten is Scott Kelby. Good luck Yuri great idea!

46
Not really a problem Elena, since most actor are not working actors.  ;D  I post notices in acting schools in my area and have no problem filling spots. At this point I started to turn away people. Give it a try!

47
One suggestion, stop using models and start uses actors.

Downloads and Royalties charts just updated. It looks like Tues wasn't as bad as Monday, but still one cazy swing in money and downloads. Will have to go with Holgs on this one " its all over the place at the moment." Nothing to do but sit back and wait to see how it plays out. ;D

I'm not seeing more than "normal" action on new files, but my download pattern is way off for the last two days.
