iStockPhoto.com / Extended License Earnings
« on: June 13, 2011, 20:51 »
So far this month I've sold 3 extended licenses on IS. Two of them only paid a paltry $6.06! How is that possible? ???

Adobe Stock / Worse than iStock for me
« on: March 09, 2011, 12:57 »
The situation for me at Fotolia has gone from bad to worse, in the short span of a few weeks. In fact, for me it's turned out to be even worse that at iStock. Everything is going downhill there - first there was the commission cut, then they changed the search function in way that caused a huge drop in downloads for me, and now they are rejecting almost half of what I upload - and they used to accept most of it. I've resumed uploading to iStock - Fotolia is even worse, and I can't afford to stop uploading to both of them. This is really discouraging. Am I alone in this, or are others feeling the pain?

iStockPhoto.com / A Fable for those considering exclusivity
« on: September 20, 2010, 21:46 »
A warning fable for anyone who might be considering exclusivity:

]A young girl was trudging along a mountain path, trying to reach her grandmother's house. It was bitter cold, and the wind cut like a knife. When she was within sight of her destination, she heard a rustle at her feet.
Looking down, she saw a snake. Before she could move, the snake spoke to her. He said, "I am about to die. It is too cold for me up here, and I am freezing. There is no food in these mountains, and I am starving. Please put me under your coat and take me with you."
"No," replied the girl. "I know your kind. You are a rattlesnake. If I pick you up, you will bite me, and your bite is poisonous."
"No, no," said the snake. "If you help me, you will be my best friend. I will treat you differently."
The little girl sat down on a rock for a moment to rest and think things over. She looked at the beautiful markings on the snake and had to admit that it was the most beautiful snake she had ever seen.
Suddenly, she said, "I believe you. I will save you. All living things deserve to be treated with kindness."
The little girl reached over, put the snake gently under her coat and proceeded toward her grandmother's house.
Within a moment, she felt a sharp pain in her side. The snake had bitten her.
"How could you do this to me?" she cried. "You promised that you would not bite me, and I trusted you!"
"You knew what I was when you picked me up," hissed the snake as he slithered away.

iStockPhoto.com / Thinkstock and the Huffington Post
« on: September 20, 2010, 08:45 »
Thinkstock advertising is plastered all over The Huffington Post website, and the hypocrisy of this frustrates me to no end.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/
The Huffington Post is a progressive, left-wing, anti-corporate news website, and yet they have Thinkstock, Getty's greedy substitute for StockExpert, plastered all over their site at regular intervals. To add insult to injury, they frequently use well labeled Thinkstock images as illustrations for their stories, providing yet another endorsement of the abomination known as Thinkstock.

I've been wanting to approach them about this, but I don't know how to go about it. Under 'contact us' they have an option where you can send in news tips, and I was thinking of sending them some info about how Getty shafted the istock contributors. But I'm not sure what links to send along them along with my 'news tip'; and I'm looking for suggestions - any links or ideas anyone?

Computer Hardware / Looking for a monitor
« on: September 04, 2010, 12:19 »
My beautiful  Samsung SyncMaster244T monitor is dying, and I've been shopping for something comparable. I searched on this forum, found a recent discussion about monitors; and learned that my monitor was discontinued. It's replacement, the  Samsung SyncMaster245T was recommended instead, but it turns out that model has been discontinued, too. There are a gazillion monitors available, at all different prices, and I can't decide. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Right now I'm opted out of iStock's partner program - because I'm opposed to the poor royalties and don't want my work devalued in that way. But now I'm wondering if maybe I should opt in my older, lower quality poor sellers on an individual basis. Still, I'm conflicted about the ethics of this, I don't want to contribute to the downfall of microstock just to make a few extra $$'s. Would it be wrong to treat Thinkstock as a bargain center type storefront for my 'clearance items'? Or is Thinkstock such an abomination that it would be unethical to participate in it at all?

General Stock Discussion / Interesting photo illustration
« on: June 09, 2010, 08:20 »
There's a really interesting article on Bernie Madoff's life in prison in New York magazine, but the reason I'm posting about it here is because of the photos of 'Bernie in prison' that accompany the article. Naturally no photographer is going to be allowed to do a photo shoot of Madoff in prison, so this photographer used a model that resembles Madoff, then somehow they got access to a prison (maybe one not in use?) and shot a series of photos depicting Madoff sitting in a cell, sweeping floors, ect, ect. Here's a link:
http://nymag.com/news/crimelaw/66468/?dbk

I've wondered about doing this sort of thing; I do 3D, and I have a model that looks like Obama. But they'd have to be editorial, and after looking at many of the editorial photos in Dreamstime, and seeing that the vast majority of them get very few if any downloads; there's not much incentive to give it a try. But I did think it was an interesting approach to photo illustration, as well as fascinating article about a psychopath.

General Stock Discussion / Thinkstock image on CNN

This is so depressing, have a look and note the credit in the upper right hand  corner of the photo:

Looks like Getty's advertising blitz is working (sigh).

General Stock Discussion / Thinkstock advertising
« on: May 05, 2010, 13:08 »
I'm seeing Thinkstock being advertised all over the place online, they are really pushing that site!  It's depressing to keep seeing the ads all over the place, and being reminded of what we lost. StockXpert was such a great site, and they replaced it with this travesty. It appears that Getty is spending tons of money to promote it. Greed ruins everything :(

General - Top Sites / 'Buy the rights' question
« on: February 27, 2010, 22:00 »
I've been notified by DT, that someone is interested in buying the rights to one of my illustrations. They recommend an asking price of $2000. I'm torn because the image happens to be among my top 10 illustrations in terms of downloads. This image was downloaded 283 times on Fotolia, 75 times on Dreamstime. I don't want to do something I'll regret. It's very possible they won't want to pay $2000 anyway, but just in case I'm hesitant. Thoughts anyone?

iStockPhoto.com / Using NASA resources - rejection problem
« on: February 11, 2010, 15:51 »
Whenever I create an illustration that uses NASA resources (usually a photo of the planet earth) and upload it to iStock (giving credit to NASA in the description), iStock rejects it with the following:
It appears that the map you have submitted was derived from a map, or similar source, using distinctive elements that are recognizable from the original. Since the map is the predominant aspect of the file, it may be a prohibited derivative work.

Please include the following information in your description of the file to have this file reconsidered:
- The source of the map you have used for reference (URL or a scan to verify ownership)
- The software you have used to create your file
- The date your file was created
- The layers of data used.

There are many images on iStock using photos of the planet earth, they simply say "courtesy of NASA" in the description field. Do they really require ALL of this information whenever a NASA image is part of the overall illustration? Theses two images (the devil one submitted a while ago, the other just recently) were both rejected with the above message.
Here are links to the images in question:

http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-21003310/stock-photo--d-render-depicting-the-devil-in-control-of-the-earth.html

So does anyone know how I can possibly get these types of images into my iStock portfolio?

thanks...

Image Sleuth / Any limit to rip-offs?
« on: October 05, 2009, 16:12 »
What would you do if you discovered that someone copied one of your most popular images - and they even copied all of the keywords from your image (his keywords are exactly the same as mine), and the written description was almost exactly the same, too. I get so irritated with these thieves, and the laziness of this thief is especially disgusting, IMO. What would you do in this instance, would you complain to the agency? Would it do any good? Is there no limit to what these idiots can get away with?

Veer / Veer - a big waste of time
« on: July 15, 2009, 20:39 »
Let me start out by saying I regret joining Veer, and wasting so much time on their site. I've decided to stop uploading, and I'm getting close to canceling my account. I wasted several hours uploading a batch of around 40 illustrations to Veer, all different subject matter. Most of them were rejected as "subject matter not suitable for the Veer marketplace". I seriously doubt they spent more that 5 minutes looking over the whole batch of around 40. There was a wide range of subjects, most were rejected. I'm mainly disgusted at the colossal waste of time this was, time that could have been spent creating new illustrations for my portfolio. Even iStock, the most rejecting agency out there, accepts 79% of my work - and they also provide Scout to rescue the images that never should have been rejected.

And that's not all, I can't get the FTP to work, and when I posted about it on this forum, I received no help whatsoever. I had to upload images one at a time, ridiculously time consuming. I'm very busy and don't have time to waste like this. Take some advice that I wished I had received to begin with - don't waste your time on Veer >:(

iStockPhoto.com / Considering Exclusivity
« on: June 28, 2009, 15:46 »
I never thought I'd ever seriously consider iStock exclusivity, but since my relationship with Fotolia is going sour, I'm seriously considering it. Fotolia was my second highest earning site, but I actually prefer the management at iStock. I'm a diamond level contributor at iStock, so my earnings would increase by 45%. Without Fotolia, it might make financial sense. My biggest frustration at iStock has been the senseless rejections, but that problem is mitigated to large extent by the Scout program.  I also appreciate the fact that they are the only site that allows you to correct problems and resubmit.

But I'm concerned that that if things go sour with iStock, I'm done for. Has anyone gone exclusive and then regretted it? Were the benefits what you expected? I haven't made any decisions yet, I'm just exploring my options.

Adobe Stock / My Account Blocked - Help!
« on: June 25, 2009, 07:49 »
My Fotolia account has been blocked and I need to contact Chad Bridwell as soon as possible. I'm using this forum because I don't have access to the Fotolia forums. This is all because of a misunderstanding that I can clear up. Chad, if you are reading this, I responded to your email, please call me.

Print on Demand Forum / Found my image on Zazzle
« on: June 12, 2009, 17:47 »
I found one of my images on Zazzle. It can be printed on a coffee mug, chef's apron and tote bag . Is this sort of thing allowed under most extended license agreements? I would think this is only allowed if the person owned the image outright, but I'm not sure. Thoughts, anyone?

iStockPhoto.com / Trouble uploading
« on: February 12, 2009, 11:26 »
Am I the only one having trouble uploading to iStock? Images often upload without the file info, so I have to cut and paste from Photoshop ...or the thumbnail for the image isn't generated and you get blank white space instead. This has been going on for at least two weeks, but I haven't seen any complaints in their forums. Is anyone else having problems?

iStockPhoto.com / Rejections increasing?
« on: December 16, 2008, 14:16 »
Is it just me, or is iStock increasing the number of rejections? My acceptance rate is usually 79%, but lately most of what I upload is being rejected.  I  used up all of my scout tickets before the month was half over. If I'm learning from the rejections, I don't mind so much, but most of the rejections are for edges (even though I check and recheck edges before uploading), and I just got another one for artifacting, but it was for a 3D rendered illustration with no filters used in postwork.

Anyone else notice an increase in rejections? I do mostly raster illustrations and a lot of isolated images, so I'm highly "rejectable" at iStock anyway, but this is getting really bad. I'm tempted to stop uploading.

iStockPhoto.com / declining downloads
« on: August 11, 2008, 17:40 »
My portfolio appears to be dying a slow death at iStock. IS used to be my best earning site, but lately the downloads are down to trickle. Is it just me, or are others seeing a big drop in downloads? I'm not exclusive.

I can't stand it anymore! I have a picture in my portfolio that is just plain bad - yet the stupid sells and sells like crazy! Here it is:
http://www.shutterstock.com/pic.mhtml?id=94858
The bird is flying, yet the feet are left in the default perching position.

I made and uploaded a new and improved  version of it, hoping people would download it instead:
http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-5656783-blue-and-gold-macaw-flying-d-render.html
But it doesn't get downloaded nearly as much.

Every time that thing is downloaded (which happens with depressing frequency) I cringe. I should delete the stupid thing, but I'm making a lot of money off of it, in fact it's one of my best sellers at Shutterstock. At least iStock had the good sense to reject it.

So I'm curious, anyone else have a bad picture in their portfolio that sells like crazy? If you do, I'd love to see them  ;)

I know it sounds strange complaining about a picture that sells too much, but it's just so weird!

StockXpert.com / Subscritions at StockXpert
« on: March 17, 2008, 10:44 »
I have subscription sales enabled at SX, and now I'm wondering if I
should disable it. It seems that the percentage of subscription
downloads is increasing, and I wonder if I'm hurting my earnings
potential by allowing it. What are most contributers doing? If you
disabled subscription downloads, did you do it because you thought it
would increase your overall SX earnings? Or did you do it simply
because you are offended by the idea that someone can download an XL
image for only 30 cents? Is it the money, the principle of the thing
or both? Any recommendations for me...?
thanks
Linda B
