We can't rely on any 'one' source of energy, but luckily there are plenty of sources out there.
Solar, geothermal, wind just to name three and also one of my favorites: harnessing the oceans tides to produce power.

There is no doubt that cars need to be electric based.
Battery tech is starting to catch up and that has been the greatest hurdle, because recharging is a lot slower than refueling.
People need to feel confident that their vehicles have a decent range. No one wants to run out of power in the middle of stop and go traffic.

I have an intuos and the client site i goto has bamboo. There is a pretty noticeable difference between those products and i must say that i have been spoiled by my experience with intuos as the bamboo isnt as sensitive. I guess thats why bamboo's are much cheaper.

Yup.

It is very redundant for photogs to use intuos for photo editing.. I am an illustrator, doing pretty good with wacom bamboo, can easily buy a cintiq, but can't convince myself that I definitely need it..

Cintiq in my opinion is only necessary if one day I decide to use it for digital paintings, because bamboo (or intuos) are good enough for vector drawings.. When it comes to creating digital paintings that look like real oil paintings Cintiq is what you must have..

Bamboo is good!  Intuos is an expensive bamboo! :) If you, at all, are going to upgrade, go for cintiq because I think having a bamboo or intuos is pretty much the same thing..

Redundant? I think the word you were going for is overkill.
In any event, I disagree. I have an old Intuos and a bamboo that I use for traveling with my laptop. The Bamboo works ok in a pinch, but it lags a bit and does not offer the same fine control as an Intuos.
Also, I don't think you understand photo editing at all or at least not retouching. Retouching is very much like painting, and requires fine control not the gross global adjustments I think you are alluding to when you say 'editing'.

I'm still using my Intuos II.
It may not be the slickest looking pad on the planet, but its bullet proof and still gets the job done just fine.
Not tempted to change anytime soon.

Canon / Re: Canon 5D Mark III: Official announcement
« on: March 02, 2012, 00:46 »
I'm nonplussed.
Its mostly tweaks to make it a better video camera, but as a still shooter there is little need to upgrade from the Mark II.

The most I ever put out was just under $900 US in 2008.
The model and MUA were reasonable, but the hairstylist was over the top expensive.
Needless to say, I have not used her since.

I can't remember exactly, but I think it took a year to recoup.
Luckily, these are still selling and have done fairly well.

We strive to leverage our core competency by identifying important metrics and circling back via relentless repeatability.  ;D

There is little I loathe more than corporate double speak and obfuscation.

Canon / Re: Canon 5D Mark III 3 - Rumor Page :)

Is it possible to "build our own" camera??  A la a Dell Computer???

I'll take ...
- a 21MP APS-H sensor
- 8 fps
- Dual Digic 5 processors
- Infrared controller flash (pop-up if need be)
- ISO to 25,600 (max)
- Sensor cleaning
- whatever else....

etc.....

Just curious

Isn't that basically what the "RED" camera system is?
A modular system that allows one to pick and choose the specs.

It may be that Getty is folding IS into the main corporate control and thus needs fewer employees.
Of course this RIF action will help a little in feeding the beast that owns Getty.

Using my own recently paltry sales as a barometer, tells me IS in its present configuration is not long for this world.  :o

Photo Critique / Re: Find the Vetta
« on: January 15, 2012, 02:58 »
I have a small handful of Vetta's & I can't seem to get anything else in either.

I believe the secret is the difficulty and/or rarity of the image.
Unique location, or unique content or fantastical composting.
In my mind, these are what they want now.

Very cool. I wish I had his subjects to image!  ;D

Yes, it is painfully obvious that H&F are taking Getty (and us) to the cleaners. What more is there to be said?

"Removing inefficiencies", what a lovely phrase. What a crock of crap too.
I worked once for a company that was attempting to become more efficient with something known as 'lean' manufacturing methods. It didn't work. These things rarely do, because humans are by nature inefficient beings. Making a company too efficient takes away from its humanity and unless the whole operation is run by robots, is doomed to fail.

H&F has not the slightest clue what to takes to run an operation that must cater to creatives both on the contributor and buyer side. They don't really care to know. All they want is to wring as much cash as possible from this before they dump the broken lifeless carcass on someone else.

So if I use Dermablend I'll end up looking like a skeleton?
LOL - it's just really interesting to see how the initial perception of somebody changes your image of a person. I didn't know Rick Genest until now, so I thought this was some "regular" guy. Well it IS some regular guy... Just with tattoos  8)

Just with some tattoos? That must be the understatement of the year (thus far).

General Stock Discussion / Re: Model: Middle-aged or Mature?
« on: December 31, 2011, 14:06 »
45 is considered middle age in the US.
Unless the model appears to be over 60, I would shy way from using the word 'mature' as this is really a euphemism for old.

I was in India a few years ago and one of my co-workers was referred to as "That Elderly Gentleman".
He was under 50 at the time and being half Japanese looked even younger.
He had a mock fit about being called elderly and explained that in the US one needs to be over 70 to get that label.
The young Indian woman (I would guess to have been about 21), was embarrassed and apologized but added that this was the term they used there.

So, it is highly dependent on the market you expect to be doing business in.
This also explains the huge difference in what the inspectors will accept, considering they are splattered across the globe.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Sales have tanked big time
« on: December 17, 2011, 16:11 »
... but you are wrong, the succes is coming ONLY from the images I uploaded in 2011. More than 65 % (!!!) of my royalites made this year are coming from images uploaded in 2011.

What you fail to mention is that you have increased your portfolio size by 138% (!!!) in 2011.

More specifically you've done 138% more work in the last 10 months than you had previously achieved in the preceeding 3.3 years combined. Hardly surprising that you are experiencing growth.

Let's see how long you can keep it up for __ you'll need to upload nearly 2500 new images in 2012 and 6000 in 2013. Good luck with that.

And this is another problem about this idea:  it defeats the main advantage of stock photography:  Residual Income.   If you have to upload a certain amount a year just to keep sales, let alone increase them, its not residual anymore and how is that any better than doing for hire photography?

Yup, that is exactly correct. The microstock model destroyed (for the most part) the idea of residual income from stock.
Now if you were the owner of images from a famous and deceased person that might be a bit different.

You've two choices:

Pay your models and then you don't have to give them any of the photos

or

If you're doing TFCD get them to sign a contract detailing exactly what they can use the images for.

It's not rocket science!

You are not dealing with professional models & most of them are totally ignorant of copyright laws.

This is the price we pay for using Model Mayhem, Craigslist or Facebook talent.

Yup, Reuters got caught doctoring the news in just such a fashion:

"Honestreporting" is as mendacious a website as you'll find. Basically, it's an Israeli propaganda site posing as something else.

Perhaps you would prefer to hear the same story from Der Spiegel, Mein Capitan?

Mine is about 74%.
I don't think it works the same way in micro.
Good selling files get pushed to the front, but not necessarily photographers.

I don't even use CDs or DVDs anymore.
The storage space is too small and my filing system for things in the physical world is: just chuck it in a corner somewhere.
Negatives? I can't find any of my old negatives. I do have some chromes stored, but they are not commercial material.

I use multiple internal hard drives and back them up to external drives. As long as one backs up often; data is forever... oh wait, that's "A Diamond is Forever". My bad  ;D

Punters? (I had to look up the English use of that term). I don't think they would have a problem with it. Its all about getting fair value for what you have paid for.
Pay to play. Same as it ever was.
