We spend so much time on Photoshop making people look unreal, that now our perception is so screwed up that we think CGI looks real!

It does not, it looks like a very well done computer graphic but a computer graphic non-the-less.

Avatar was a motion picture. Our eyes are much more forgiving of detail on objects in motion.
A still image is meant to be dwelt upon and studied. Computer generated images of people just can't cut it yet.

Will they ever? Probably. But it's a world I don't want to live in.
I think there will be a huge backlash to it someday.
Just as the hippies of yesteryear rejected the social constructs of their day and helped reshape the way western civilization lives now.
So too, I believe that our synthetically created worlds will be rejected.

There has already been some of that happening.
There has been some small outcry about how perfect 'shopped' models look in magazines which in turn makes our daughters feel as if they are not good enough.

ETA: and when it does take over Microstock, expect to be paid 5% per download.
After all, you did not have to hire a model or a MUA or a stylist or a...  ;D

I find 120cd/m2 to be too bright for printing, so I calibrate lower.
But I do go by the histogram to avoid blowing out highlights or blocking up shadows too much.

I am fairly certain that the inspectors will be looking at your histograms for those same things.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Buyers Bailing on Istock
« on: September 11, 2010, 18:45 »
I know that Scott Kelby buys from Istock, wonder if he knows what the agency is doing and if it would change a thing... .

Probably not as long as they buy advertising space from him.

I think you would find that Istock is making heaps of money but it has been chosen to offset reductions across the rest of the Getty business.

Having said that I don't care, you don't eye gouge the golden goose to prop up reductions in sales in other areas. 80% is already enough commission.

So seeing istocks financial statements would make me more angry in this grab for cash.

Gouging the golden goose is EXACTLY what most business will do.
For instance, in my 'day' job I work for and educational organization. There is another arm of the organization that provides a service and has nothing to do with the education side. The education side losses money or at best breaks even every year. The company uses it's service side to make up the difference.

Those who work on the service side should, by measure of their contribution to the overall success of the organization be making higher wages than those on the education side... But they don't. They get screwed over because they support the money losing side of the equation.

This is why Getty bought IS in the first place, to shore up their balance sheets.

The answer the OPs question, no it would not make any difference if I could see IS financials. My wife is a CPA and I know very well how business bury the numbers to make things look more bleak than they really are.

istock is changing to a new business model. The Agency collection will be a midstock collection of Getty pros and selected istock contributors, attracting buyers who previously wouldn't consider micro. The micro collections will be kept as the budget outlet but not the core business. A one-stop shop for buyers of all colors, capitalising on the istock brand. Should do well. But the majority of current contributors are not very relevant to this model.

If that is true, they are killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.

« on: September 10, 2010, 18:20 »
I understand needing to keep a limit on the number of contributors reaching the top payout percentages.
But there is no excuse for dropping the independents below 20%.
That is a sustainable level ad infinitem ad nauseum.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istock Second "Explanation" to Contributors
« on: September 10, 2010, 09:00 »
The point is simple.  They are working on trying to make iStock exclusive only and pay 20%.

They will continue to drop the % for non-exclusives until they all leave (or work for free).  In the process they will drive exclusives down also to 20% like the rest of Getty and throw a few unreachable goals to keep the mice turning the wheel.

Once that is done, the door to iStock will be exclusive only and 20% (or less starting out).

That is my prediction.  Only time will tell.

As others have said, its not about "losing" money or being about to "sustain" the business; its about their long
term (or short) goals and how they can get there.

I feel that you are correct. This is probably the ultimate goal.

@Handust (Lisa),

Jewelry is notoriously difficult to shoot well.
If you can master that, you have found yourself a niche.

Computer Hardware / Re: Looking for a monitor
« on: September 06, 2010, 23:59 »

The heart of a monitor is its panel.  In the HP the Samsung LTM220M3 is used.
A quick google revealed this panel is also used by : Eizo, Nec, Dell... with considerably higher prices for the end product than the HP... ;D.. basically you're paying for the Brand name on the monitor...  :o

Patrick.

While this is very true to a point, the firmware and software tweaks do make a difference in the way a panel performs.
Apple and Dell used to use the same panel and the Apple Cinema displays look quite different from the old Dells.

This is very similar to what auto makers do with their engine management systems.
The same exact engine in two different cars can have substantially more performance in one car due to changes made to the engine management chip the manufacturer puts in.

Computer Hardware / Re: Looking for a monitor

My trusty and dead-on accurate Samsung CRT monitor finally got to the point where I could no longer perform an accurate hardware color calibration  :(
The blue gun was dying.

While I really, really was in love with the idea of a 30" monitor, the cost was too high to justify.
I finally decided on the NEC MultiSync LCD 2690WUXi(2).
The almost 26" screen is wonderful and I have a 20" Dell LCD set to the side to in profile mode for my Photoshop tools.
That leaves me the entire NEC screen for my image!

The NEC has a built in 12 bit color look up table (LUT) and this monitor's color gamut has 97.8% coverage of the Adobe RGB color space.
If you get the NEC Spectraview software with it; hardware color calibration is a total no brainer. It utilizes the built in LUT for calibration.
Just set up the puck, hit go and the monitor calibrates itself without any human intervention.
In addition, this monitor's color gamut has 97.8% coverage of the Adobe RGB color space.

I have used Eizo monitors and I find this NEC to be equal or better.

I had one this month and it always feels great.
If I had two in a month I know I would be walking on air :)

Canon / Re: Canon announces 120 mp sensor
« on: August 25, 2010, 13:09 »
Back to the reality - there is NO Canon lens even close to such resolution. In fact most of Canon lenses (remember most are low end or prosumer) have trouble even with 7D. Other thing is that there is simply no use for it - A3/300dpi is "only" 16Mpix and there is in 99% cases no need for 300dpi beyond A3. At least I do not pixelpeep billboards...

While it is true that such high resolution is not needed for general photography, there are at least two areas I can think of where this technology could be applied.
Astronomy and military satellite imaging.

I suspect that if you are talking about the average beach going teen, these answers are about on par. The surfers in southern California are legendary for their stupidity.

In any case, he probably did find a few people that knew the correct answers, but those would have been edited out due to lack of entertainment value.

Well he just asked a bunch of teenagers at the beach. I'm not surprised at the answers. BTW, one of the young women was from Australia. The group of Asian teens knew most of the answers, even if they were a bit unsure.

Oh and "Video killed the radio star"...

So there will always be "another one that bites the dust"...

Very good!

They worried that the movies would kill live theater.
They worried that TV would kill the movie industry.
They worried that video would kill radio.

The internet has not killed TV, radio, the music industry or the photography industry.
It has made drastic changes to the way the latter have had to do business.
The industry that has been impacted most heavily it would seem is the print industry.
Newpapers are dying or at least the print versions are. Magazines are also seeing drops in circulation.

Frankly, I like magazines and I like to see photographs in print. I hope these never die out completely.

Off Topic / Re: Hindenburg Omen (stock market crash)
« on: August 20, 2010, 21:54 »
I guess I am at a loss.  How exactly is Wall Street the cause of our problems?

People blame everyone but themselves.  We get ourselves into debt and buy homes we can't afford, then blame the government for not protecting us enough.  We insist on buying muscle cars and SUVs, then bitch about the price at the pump or better yet blame the Bush Administration and Big Oil for destroying our lives.  A few years from now people will be blaming Obama for a million things he had no control over either.  Personal responsibility is the only thing which can turn our current plight around.

And there is no Hindenburg Omen effect on the stock market.  It's horsesh*t, just like the January Effect, the Superbowl Predictor, Gann Theory, Elliot Waves, and all the other crap the financial media latches onto.  But most people believe this stuff.  Just like most people lose to the market averages, and most people buy and sell way more often than they should.

What do you mean. we?  ;D
My wife and I have only one mortgage & no equity credit lines. Our cars are paid for and we have minimal credit card debt.

The problem was that the government relaxed its oversight of the banking system (biggest bunch of crooks on the planet) who in turn gave loans to people who had no business buying homes and could not repay the debt. I don't understand why that is so difficult for people to grasp?

And you are absolutely correct about his "technical" analysis garbage. That is absolutely what it is: garbage.

JCM is 58 years old. Touring is hard enough work when you are young, let alone for someone pushing 60.

The Internet is a great way for young musicians as a way to be seen and heard. But for an established talent who would rather stay in the recording studio and just sell "records" it is a catastrophe.

« on: August 12, 2010, 10:18 »
Benefit of getting a rating? It makes you feel nice to be appreciated.

Once upon a time, I believe that the ratings did have an affect on the best match placement. But then a bunch of rating gangs got together and started gaming the system and IS had to kill that program.
