General Stock Discussion / Vector Graphics, why so expensive?
« on: January 07, 2008, 22:55 »
Here is a general question.
I suppose that I am showing my ignorance here... but why are vector graphics so expensive?

I was looking over at a few in IS and the minimum price that I see is 5 credits.
One I looked at goes for 15 credits. Only one size available, I assume that is because vector graphics are infinitely scaleable?

No offense to the illustrative artists meant, but why are photographs so poorly valued?

Factoring in our investment in equipment (cameras, lenses, lights, studio, props, computer, etc) plus the skills required to post process, not to mention MUA costs and model fees (if you use pro or semi-pro models).... photos should cost a lot more.

It would seem to me that the only up front costs a computer artist has is the computer and time.

So what? Am i wrong?

Anyone have the answer?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Rejection Cheer
« on: December 20, 2007, 02:26 »
I have to agree with AKA-Tom.

I had a recent rejection for artifacting along the edges of a certain Image (an image already accepted at three other agencies). Well sure enough, there were some 'jaggies' along the edges they mentioned, but they were NOT visable at 100%, I had to go to 200% to see and work on them.

I will use an analogy that I have first have experience with: Diamond Grading. An imperfection must be visable at 10X magnification to be called detrimental to the clarity grade of a diamond. Many diamond graders (just substitute the word inspectors here) look for imperfections at higher magnifications and then turn down the power of the microscope to see if they can 'call' the imperfection visable. As a last step, they are required to use a 10X hand loupe just to make certain.

Well in the interest of speed, many will skip this step. :-X

I think much the same thing is happening a IS. These inspectors are in such a hurry to churn through so many submissions that they resort to looking for problems at 200% (maybe higher) so that they may quickly reject and get on to the next item.

After all, these are just human beings and they are under pressure to perform.

Add to the equation that this is a Getty organization, and you have a recipe for super strict inspection protocols.

Mark,

I don't want to beat a dead horse here, but if I were you I would not even THINK about anything less than a camera with a CMOS sensor (Canon or Nikon). These have lower noise than the CCD chips used on smaller sensor cameras.

I shoot a Canon 5D mainly, though I have an older 20D as a backup.
I ONLY shoot raw.

I have virtually 100% acceptance at SS, FT, DT.
IS is the only site where my acceptance rate is lower, but my rejections there are not from image noise. The reasons at IS jump all over the place, but usually I get some funky 'overfiltered' comment on an image that I did nothing much more to than the RAW conversion.
Go figure  ???.

As far a your post processing skills go, I have no doubt that they are very good. Having said that though; I can state unequivocally that one can only push a jpeg so far and that's all she wrote.

Vincent Versace said in a seminar "You can't polish a turd'.
In other words, no matter how excellent your photoshop skills, there must exist sufficient quality data in the original capture.

I fear you are just handicapping yourself by using anything less than a DSLR.

Mark, you don't state what your shots are being rejected for.
If it is a noise issue, then it may just be because of that small imaging sensor Canon you are shooting with.

But we really need more info if anyone here is going to be of any help.

Joe

We all know that new submissions get all the attention at SS, and then the sales taper off.

My question: What is the highest number of downloads on a new image that anyone has had?

The most downloads on a single image that I have thus far is 24, and that one has been around for quite a while now.

I have to admit that while the same image is also on IS, it has been downloaded far fewer times there. As a matter of fact my highest selling image at IS has only 27 downloads and it has been there for at least two years now.

General - Top Sites / December Sales Flat?
« on: December 10, 2007, 18:57 »
So, my sales this month are pretty much non-existant.
OK, I don't have a large portfolio on any one site, so I know that is a handicap. Still, I usually do a bit better than this.

Am I alone here or is the Holiday season putting a major crimp on sales.
Also, if this is the case, has anyone noticed this pattern year after year?

I don't have any shots on Fotolia...yet.

I was wondering, if they require a Fotolia specific model release or could I use one from another site.

I have quite a few shots that have iStock and/or SS or DT releases. I would like to submit these to Fotolia as well.

I am not always able to get back to a model that I have shot in order to obtail a new relaease.

So, what say ye, am I up a creek or or no?

Thanks,

Joe

Becky,

I would be interested to know how your shots are selling on iStock vs Dreamstime.

I don't see any people shots in your port, so you would not be doing the sort of PP that I have to do.

« on: October 15, 2007, 22:07 »
Ever since the big 'melt down' at iStock I have been having more rejections that accepted files.
Without exception the rejections have been for 'over filtered' files.

The strange thing is, I have not changed my editing technique at all, and all my previous files were accepted without a problem.
if anything, I think I have backed off a bit on my skin smoothing techniques, though they never were over the top as many shots that I see in 'People" magazine, etc are. I actually dislike that look a lot.

So, anyone have the same feeling that I do about the inspections? Tougher or no?

BTW, does anyone know if ticking the SR-EL (sell the rights box) would have anything to do with buyers not using the shots for other purposes?

That is, if one a designer has the option to buy the rights to an image, maybe potential buyers will be leery to purchase a more limited use license, thinking it could be pulled from them later.

Update: 10/23/2007

Well, happy to announce that I actually had not one, but two downloads today on DT. Its a start, eh?

On a completely OT subject, we (my family) awoke yesterday at 2:30 am to honking horns and fervent doorbell ringing.
We were being evacuated due to the fires here in Southern Calif. I woke up the kids and grabbed my laptop and my 5D.
Funny, about what you think to take with you in an emergency. I wish I could have taken a few good photos of the conflagration, but law enforcement and the fire dept. were not letting me get close enough to get a decent vantage point  >:(

Oh well, maybe next time  ;).

I don't think that I have checked any boxes incorrectly...but I will double check.

Hatman,

I am in Southern California, San Diego area, USA. We have an extremely large population of Asians here, particularly Vietnamese in Orange county.
And a large number of them think that they are model material  ;)

I am Caucasian though. My wife is of Chinese decent, but grew up in Indonesia. Thus the trips I take to Indonesia are to visit family, and I try to find some models to shoot while I am there. Helps pass the time.

I have been looking for some exceptional Caucasian and African decent models in the area and I have found that most of the really good ones are already signed with an agency. I can't afford to compensate my models like that...so I am sort of limited at the moment in who I can shoot.
I am trying to get a male/female shoot put together soon that will feature Caucasian models this time.

I will for sure need to take a hard look at my key wording etc.
My main modus operandi is to find the hot sellers on iStock that are of a similar type and come as close to using those key words as possible.
Seems that is a bad tactic after all.

Oh well. Live and learn (at least I hope to still learn).

Dreamstime.com / How long til your first download?
« on: October 14, 2007, 11:14 »
Hi all,

I have been on Dreamstime since late April and have 75 images online there. I have yet to get a single download, even though most of these same shots are on Shutterstock and istock.

Most have sold at least once on Shutterstock. iStock is much slower for me, but still not as bad as Dreamstime.

Just want to get a feel for the site. Maybe I need a different mix or is blogging necessary to get noticed there?

Thanks

-joe
