Computer Hardware / Re: Backing up your photos
« on: May 09, 2006, 11:02 »
I use an external drive, and sync it up about 1 a week.  Then I burn DVDs and keep them off site, (work, friends house, etc).  That way I don't need to get a fire safe, although I probably will soon since I'm just starting to build a house.  I want a closet safe.

Well he should have nice clean images as long as the ISO is kept down.  The rebel XT has an excellant sensor.

Maybe you already stated this, but what kind of camera are you using Ichiro?

They also state they want you to use their keywording tool instead of IPTC.  I don't think their business model is based in reality.  They obviously need to grow their image base but are making it difficult for photographers to submit images.  Maybe they will soon realize that and start making changes that are better for photographers.  Not even Getty makes such demands on photographers, they do all of the keywording for them.  I don't mind submitting to new places, I did with Featurepics, but they have to be reasonable.

They have about 300 images total.  Leaf you could raise quadruple their images alone.  Let us know how easy the submission process is?  One thing I noticed was they asked their images to be in Adobe RGB, while most other agencies want it in sRGB.

I'm sorry you got rejected.  But like you said, I'm sure you will get accepted once you get a larger portfolio to work with.  Obviously I ran into the same problem.

I believe it took about 10 days for me.  I missed it by one image so I have to wait 3 months.  It's not the end of the world but I wish I would have been able to submit images for the past 3 months.  They will review the images on both quality or technical standards and subject matter.

Ichiro

I think you are getting a little impatient.  ;) , but don't we all.  With about 200 images I was getting about 1 sale a week at $4 last month.  This month I only got two sales.  So with 40 images you should expect less than 1 sale a month at FP.  But it also depends heavily upon how much you priced them and how sellable your images are.  I just don't want you to get discouraged.  Keep taking pictures and uploading them.  Set a goal to upload 10 20 or 30 images a week.  What ever works for you and concentrate on building your portfolio.  Once you have 200 - 400 images then worry about which site will bring in the maximum amount and will work for you.  By looking at April's sales, upload to the top 5 or so.  Then go from there.

Good luck and keep taking pictures,

I'm sure your sales would improve somewhat if you took the time to order your keywords as they ask you too, but my sales aren't high enough to make it worth my time.  I don't bother too, but I would be curious to know if others think it makes a difference.

General Stock Discussion / Re: April Sales
« on: April 30, 2006, 14:21 »
I submitted my 10 images to shutterstock right off and I wasn't very careful with my selection.  Only 6 passed and they require that 7 to pass to be accepted.  So I'm waiting for my 3 months to pass before I can submit again.  It should be sometime next month.

Here is mine. I submitted the same 230 images to all sites, but of course each one accepted a different percentage. Featurepics did really well for me last month but this months sales are quite poor. I assume it is because a lot more people are submitting but the sales are not growing.

Correct, there is nothing in Alamy's contract that limits you from selling your images with both Alamy and microstocks.  I have some on both to, but not very many on Alamy.  I haven't sold anything on Alamy and stopped contributing there a while back.

General Stock Discussion / DOF
« on: April 26, 2006, 17:35 »
Just one note on the parrot.  I agree that the DOF is way to shallow.  It isn't a focusing isssue but a depth of focus issue.  You probably already understand that but I wanted to make sure.  Just stop down on the aperature to 9 or 11 and that will help.  Or use a zoom and move farther back.

I signed up and was planning to submit to them.  Then I started asking around and haven't found a single person who have had more than 1 sale.  They just aren't bringing in any money for anyone.

OK this is a little OT but I'll transgress this one time.
As I noted before I chop off the end of my middle finger.  As someone else suggested I tried to get a few shots of it.  I might as well make money from it, right?   ;D

Do you think it will sell?

If I make tons of money off it I'll let you know and you can start chopping your fingers off to.   ;)

A comment about IStockPhoto.  Everyone complains about it because they are starting to be a pain to work with.  But everyone is still submitting and doing it.  Why, because they are still one of the top producers.  Basically they make us money and so we are willing to put up with it, even though we hate it. :)

As for what makes money every site caters to slightly different customers but to get a good idea just go to IStockPhoto and do searches on different subjects and sort by downloads.  You will see what sells well.  If there are a lot of images with high downloads than you know that category tends to sell well.

The reason I asked about your name was because I lived in Japan for a few years.  Great place.  Unfortunately I wasn't into photography at the time so I didn't get any pictures.

I've used nothing but the uploader. I think it is a great little program. A little slow starting up and it has a few quarks about it, but very nice. The greatest thing is the categorizing. It is local and you have a search function, so it is really easy to categorize your images without playing with the categorization tree. It is similar to FTP because you can start the upload process and then leave it without having to babysit it like most non-FTP multi-upload systems.

My System is a Win XP Pro with SP2.

I use the WS_FTP_Pro version.  I haven't tried anything else but someone else had the same problem and I think they got it working.  You could possible ask them what they use.  It is on FeaturePics forum
http://www.talkmicro.com/viewtopic.php?t=191&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0&sid=e0d346e8f5a6a249f0e253c7b94c844a

I haven't used it for a few weeks but I plan on using it tonight.  I have some great new pictures of some wacko who cut off part of his middle finger. :)  It works with IE so I can't imagine it not working with any generic FTP software.  Very strange.  I used the freeware AceFTP before I switched to WS_FTP_Pro, it was an excellant program for being free.  The only reason I switched was the need to be able to scheduled FTP uploads.
http://software.visicommedia.com/en/products/aceftpfreeware/

If I haven't uninstalled it already maybe I'll try it to, and give a report.

Hope that helps,

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock 30/week upload limit?
« on: April 17, 2006, 11:10 »
Yes, I'm disappointed that the total amount went down but I still think it is better than the daily upload limit.  The upload limit is different depending upon your level.  Leaf you have over a thousand images and I bet a significant amount of downloads.  So you might be in a higher bracket and can upload more images per week.

Its about time they did that.  That makes it much better than a daily limit.
