General Stock Discussion / Re: Zack Arias on unsplash

Photography is one of the most popular hobbies on the planet and now with digital and even mobile phones everyone can get in.

Many hobbyists are excellent photographers and they can do with their work whatever they want, including giving it away for free.

Great post!

It was a trial test of a redirecting service that was indeed installed on purpose.  If it seems spammy though, it isn't much use.  I'll put it back to 'regular programing' soon.

You are right - threads could simply be locked.
When a thread has nothing to do with microstock and the trash talk goes back far down the thread, I don't feel like sorting through it to try clean it up.  It is moved to a hidden area.  I don't feel the forum is any worse off or any useful information really goes missing when the thread is gone.

I reach a new low - this week is so low just cant be real. Sales are caped for sure - no point for uploading annymore, i will start delleting. This week i made sales who i made for one day one year beffore. They dont need us old contributors anymore - they need only crap to sell for 0.25c .

Agreed - things are starting to become rather unmotivating :(

I hope they can pull it off.  it sounds like a great project and the perfect use for the blockchain technology.

It looks a little like they are a photo business who is hiring out the blockchain / crypto part though - and that they don't really have much knowledge about either cryptos or stock agencies.  I'd rather see a business being set up solely for the purchase of licensing images with the blockchain.  Perhaps I'm biased, but I've just seen so many times where a company wants a phone app and to do so, they hire out the project to an 'app making company' and almost always, the app is HORRIBLE and buggy and doesn't work.  I think to myself that the company must of had this built for them by someone who doesn't really have that much invested in the app or doesn't care.

A small company who only makes apps and sells them themselves ends up making much much better apps.  I'm afraid this may happen to Kodak and their crypto / stock agency.  I hope I'm wrong.

it looks like there is problems with the email server.  I'll look into it today

Yes. there are thousands of photographers who do just that. they take pictures with themselves and their friends and family.

there are sometimes three generations of family members living only from stock photography income, especially if you live in a country with overall lower daily life costs.

that is why the agencies receive over 1.2 million images every single week. In 3 years that might be 5 million images a week.

that is why it is so difficult to find customers.

Oversupply of content.

But....the majority of content is not very well done. It takes years of experience to find an image style that sells well and also years to build up a following of loyal customers.

That is why I said if you are really interested in making a reliable income from stock photography you have years of hard work ahead of you.

there is no magic secret and there is no shortcut. the successful photographers all have their personal little secret of what content sells best where. they might send mostly food to Shutterstock, people to eyeem and travel images to getty.

or mostly food to getty, flowers to eyeem and cats to dreamstime.

And they also have content that sells well everywhere. So when you look at peoples portfolios you really cannot tell what works best.

It also depends on who you are. A gardener can create a beautiful portfolio of thousands of excellent images about how to grow a garden, knows when to plant what and what kind of flowers are currently the trend. If I upload garden or flower pictures, it will not sell, because i dont understand the subject matter.

But the most important is to upload.

many people just get lost reading and thinking about stock, but never upload anything.

just upload 1500 files and let the customer decide the strategy for you. Its all up to them in the end.

hard work and and years of patience. No magic. No shortcut.

Great advice cobalt!

General - Top Sites / Re: How Was Your October?
« on: November 08, 2017, 01:49 »
So everyone doing well on SS again as it seems. I am still 50% down on the months before my portfolio crashed. All other agencies are insignificant as well. Overall decline. But I am not adding any images, no time, no motivation.

I can't say I did well on SS this month.  2014 was still my top year, and I have to go back to 2010 or earlier to match the earnings of last month.  Demotivating is how I would classify it.

It seems that the lack of history for AdobeStock was crashing the graph so I've taken them out for now.  I'll add them again in a few months.

General Photography Discussion / Re: Pricing a Product Shoot?
« on: August 29, 2017, 00:40 »
If they are very similar items, you could probably set up some sort of assembly line so it didn't take long to light everything.  Once it was set up, you could roll through the items relatively quickly.

I'd figure out a 'start up' price and then a price per item.   Editing could take some time though - especially if you needed to isolate on white and get rid of all the dust or lint on the items.  I'd probably price it at about a weeks work.  To get to that price, I'd do it like this.

What I want to make it a year = X
What I want to have as a wage per week : earnperweek = x/50
What I need to charge per week : chargeperweek = earnperweek * 2

« on: August 21, 2017, 01:15 »
You started a thread about not having any sales for seven days. When it got to ten days, you updated that thread to say that you hadn't had any sales for ten days... and then also started a new thread stating that you hadn't had any sales for ten days. When you don't have any sales for thirteen days, will you mention that here and then start a new thread stating that you've not had any sales for thirteen days?

Maybe best to keep it all in the same thread... the relevance of the answers to no sales for seven days is pretty much the same as for ten days, or thirteem!

I've merged the two threads now

You should stick to marijuana though think there might be an unfilled niche there

I tried but I think could have done a better job. What do you think?

Reminds me of the guy on shutterstock with his port of 10,000+ images of only marijuana at different angles.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that is what Pauws99 was referring to

I personally don't like to aim at making money from the misfortune of others, but each to their own I suppose.
Nothing to stop anyone who felt the same way making money and donating it to a related cause.

I don't think anyone likes to make money off the misfortune of others (at least when it is worded that way) - but to say a reporter is unethical because he was paid for a story covering an unfortunate topic is a bit backwards i think.  The reporter needs to make money too (pay bills, travel to the location, pay for cameras, pay for food and a roof over his head).  It is important for both positive and negative stories to be covered.  I think the reporter should be paid to cover both.

Doctors make money off the misfortune of others as well.  But looking at it that way is quite backwards IMO.  A doctors makes money by helping those who have suffered a misfortune.  Same as a reporter helps share the story of those who have suffered a misfortune.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Cost for models
« on: August 11, 2017, 04:11 »
I've generally paid models $25-$40/hr
I pay them less the first time I use them.  If they sell well and I use the models again, I'll pay them quite a bit more.

« on: August 11, 2017, 01:32 »

Thanks for the ones that took the poll so far.  Looks lik only a couple of us still waiting.  Wonder what's up?

Rinder, I would respond to your post, but I don't really understand it or how it relates to the question.  I do know for sure I'm not the only one who relies on microstock and SS in particular to pay bills. Thanks for taking the poll if you did.

Same here PixelBytes.  Stock photography has been my only income source for the last 9 years... unfortunately I'm afraid that is soon going to change.  It's been a fun ride.

« on: August 11, 2017, 01:31 »
Yes, Payments have  been erratic the past few years. I personally would never or have ever counted on Microstock as a stable Income supplier especially for bills, Even the good Old days were basically mad Money [Anyone remember when 50 DL's a day Along with $108 EL's and SODs?...was Normal]??. I do wonder why these past 10 Days of Aug 2017 have been the Best 10 Days in 5 years!!. I haven't submitted anything Much in 5 Months and don't intend to....WHY, it seems silly because it doesn't matter in My experience ...and I wrote the complete Opposite  8 /9 years ago .

I have one of those Looooong time friends with a 150,000+ Images that used to do amazing Business as he was doing perfect lifestyle and a 100% poster boy about what stock is/was with a perfect work ethic.. Shooting a Lot and Uploading a Lot was his thing and a full time Job with upload/Keyword assistants, he used to say, If ya spend more than 30 seconds trying to fix a stock Image your going Backwards and learn to shoot Like processing wasn't around [Of course he didn't do those overblown Landscapes].  He gave up a year ago but probably still makes more than most so yes....it's relative.. It became completely Not cost effective. He reminded me of early Sean , Yuri and Andres, Forgiss and so many More. Heyday Guys.

The Forums.... No ones Talking Photography/Image making  anymore Just show me's and chit Chat about Nothing. turned into Facebook in a Month.  And The critique forum is a joke and been coming for a year.I see and comment On stuff that is embarrassing to see .And.....gets approved.

So....1.2 Million on average gets approved now a week... I would pay a months commission to know how many are submitted in that Time Range....1.3 Million???LOL
And why is FT/adobe 11th on the List all of a sudden. I asked tyler and he said it was early for the poll. . the month is nearly half over and still at #11.?? whats going On.?? Canstock and Bigstock above FT?? really??

Oh well. Rant time Over.Have fun.

The income poll had an error and FT/AS came to $0.00 for most of us. I tried to resubmit but it wouldn't allow me thus totally wrong! Not sure if the income poll works correctly now?

yep, it works correctly now.  A site needs 50 votes to get into the top area though.  If you hold your mouse over a site (like AdobeStock for example) you can see they would be right after Shutterstock.

Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe stock way down in middle tier???
« on: August 02, 2017, 02:09 »
Right now they only have 39 votes so not enough to be formally ranked on the poll, but their rating of 33.2 would put them number 2 after SS once they have enough votes.  Probably just a temporary anomaly unless there is a bug about the number of votes.

I've fixed it now - sorry.  Somehow when switching Fotolai to AdobeStock I created was a bug somewhere causing votes to AdobeStock to not register.

146
Shopify is a great site, but the question is if they have a solution to make the image ingestion very very simple.  It works great as a product store, but does it work as a digital asset store?

147
Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe stock way down in middle tier???
« on: August 01, 2017, 05:25 »
That would simply because they don't have enough votes yet to get into the top tier - after they were changed from Fotolia to AdobeStock.  A few more people need to vote and they'll be bumped up to the top again.

148
as good of an idea as this is... and as much complaining about each other as is done here.  I don't think it is worth encouraging with it's own thread ;)

You'll probably be asked to send a DMCA notice to Fotolia / Adobe
