I haven't heard ofthem.. but will check them out.

a link for those wanting a link
www.featurepics.com

Yeah i dunno if there would be much sales for $30 images when they are beside a $1.00, or on other sites for $1.00. I do know however that alamy sells RF images for $250-$500.. and the quality is the same as many micro stock shots.  I am not sure why people would go to alamy.  I guess it is what people are used to or where they can find what they are looking for.  People probably have their favorite places to shop.....

but that still doesn't explain why a $30 image would sell on a site that is usually selling for $1.00

However.. after all that is said.
I have priced my 'print' images on fotolia for $2.00, and I think i am glad i have done so.  I have gotten quite a few $2.00 sales there.  My thought was that if people want the image $1.00 or $2.00 isn't going to make a differance at all.

Well 5.1 mp isn't so bad.

I think you hit the big ones there.  I think shutterstock requires 10 images to start submitting.  Some of them don't have any minimum requirement.

I would sudjest for starters to submit to shutterstock.  I think that will be the quickest place to make some money.
After that Istock has a really good track record if you can get images in there, and dreamstime as well.

Lower down on the pole are bigstock and fotolia, but they are also very high contenders.

Canstock... well I would only submit there if you have nothing else to do and you have uploaded everything to the other places.

Then there is the others, such as scanstock, gimmestock, stockphotomedia, crestock, ... but I have only had 1 or 2 downloads on those sites and have around 100-500 images on them.... I will upload more if they ever start getting a few more downloads but until then, it is a waste of time.

Hope that helps.

And welcome here :)

well i thought you were anyhow.  If you have sold over 100 images you are the next level.
You tell by the color of the little link when you post in the forums (and probably other places too).  White is less than 100, orange is over 100 and there are more colors but I'm not sure if anyone is that high yet.

On another note mark, If you haven't checke out fotolia allready I would sudjest you do so.

Fotolia Link

They have been somewhat slow in the past but seem to be really picking up.  They also offer a 20 cent bonus for every accepted upload.  Which is a nice compensation for spending the time uploading (something I think other stock agencies should think about :)

Hi there mark.  Welcome here.

Yeah, I find that istock is hard to submit photos to.  They have so many, and are really selective now.  However I think dreamstime is even harder to get into.  However, back to istock, I find their upload process very laboursome.. it is very borderline if it is worth while to upload to them, but I have been continuing to do so recently.

Shutterstock however, always gets my uploads first.  I make about 3X more on shutterstock than I do any other stock site.

General Stock Discussion / Getting started in Micro Stock

I thought I would start a thread about getting started in micro stock in case people had questions. There are a number of people here with a fair bit of experience that I am sure would be more than happy to share any help they can give.

So those new to micro stock...
Confusion?  Questions?

wow, i wonder what i am doing wrong. Why some people have istock as the higher earner. I have heard people say that too.  Perhaps it is just what types of customers peoples images appeal too...  :-\ ???

Wow, from usually geting between 1-7 downlaods a WEEK, i managed to get 6 downloads just today, and 5 of them were for $2.00 print images... good news. Maybe the future is bright for Fotolia.... I wouldn't be surprised.

Well after a day of editing photos, a few more thoughts.

I have the tablet (when using the mouse) on absolute positioning now, so that the screen is represented by the pad.  If i move the pen to the top right corner of the pad, it goes to the top right corner of my screen.  I am still however only using 70% of the available space so am very satisfied with the size I purchased.  I wouldn't want a larger one.

One other thing I found out, which is very nice, is you can program the buttons and how everything works depending on which program you are using.  So for example, when using photoshop, i have the two buttons on the pen as shortcuts for pressing the f key (full screen) and ctrl+0 (fit image to screen) ... very handy.  Then when i go into another program, like windows explorer, or firefox, the buttons on the pen are the regular left and right click.
And in case you are wondering how i am 'clicking' with the pen when the buttons are used for other functions... well, touching the pen down on the pad is a 'click'.  This happens to work very well and is very intuitive, just like a laptop touchpad.

overall opinion.
Still very satisfied.
It was great for doing selective masking.. MUCH easier than with a mouse. :) ;D

Sales still seem a little slow for me too actually (I am surprised that so many people have over 100 sales allready), but i have only had the bulk of my images for under a month.

However, the upload program is what makes it work getting them on there.  I think that is the way for a lot of people, and once they DO have the images.. very soon more than dreamstime even (if not allready) the buyers will come.

No, well me neither, I am still waiting for my first payout with almost 1000 images.... not too good.

Yeah, a diferent customer base is a likely story.  My top two images on dreamstime don't sell hardly at all on shutterstock, or Istock.  However, how they organize their searches might explain part of this as well.

I think that whenever you end up finishing them (the month you click on the little blue arrow and fill in the keywords and such), they will count in that month.

Well i got the 4X5 today, and am very satisfied so far.  I am also very happy that i didn't get a larger tabler.  I have configured everything so the mouse pointer on the screen moves about as fast as i think it should, and i am using (Yes i measured it with a ruler) only 1/3 of the tablet... Granted my screen is only a 15 laptop, a larger tablet would be a total waste of real estate both on my desk, and on the tablet, not to mention having to spend another $100 for it.

I think i will be happy editing with it, although I have only just tested it a little.

Yeah, I'll say.  I think they are pickier than Istock even.  I get things rejected there that I get accepted at both istock and shutterstock.. and i think.. what? can they afford to do this?  The earnings are allright though still and in cometition with istock, so I definatly keep uploading there.  Perhaps they are wanting a very tight clean image gallery, with very few duplicates.
