(I hear everybody talking about the Canon/Sigma 50mm 1.4 and 1.8s but no recs for Nikons - suggestions?)

how about the nikkor 50mm 1.8? i wouldn't bother with the 1.4. i'd use the money, if you have it, to get the tamron 90mm macro. it triples as macro, portrait and everything else, depending on where you stand. both are very sharp.

StockXpert.com / Re: Thinkstock earnings posted

Any advice,  or just accept that's the way it is?

your guess is correct. but i do believe there's a third way. it's called stockfresh.  :)

perhaps you're mixing up mb (megabytes) with mp (megapixels)? i presume your canon 30d is a 8 megapixel camera and you're trying to fulfill some stock agency's requirements for at least 3 megapixel images? in that case, replace mb with mp, and you're good to go.

I am on alamy as well, but I don't think there is a need for total switch over.  Pictures that you took which are very specific location, or copyright material, or newsworthy may sell better on alamy.  However talking about the micros.

Shutterstock is a no brainer.. submit to them
Istock.  They have good earnings but I find it fairly laboursome to submit too.  I still submit, but I grumble every time.  I also find the 20 image/day upload limit a pain.
Dreamstime- they have been good.  not as good of a $/picture/year as Istock or shutterstock (which are about the same) but I have good income from them
Bigstock, and Fotolia - they are about the same in earnings. Bigstock is a little easier to upload to I think, However Fotolia gives the .20 per accepted image which ads a fair bit.

I also submit everything to stockxpert and 123RF.  Stockxpert takes 0 work to submit to... it is just a matter of letting your ftp uloader fun, then click 1 button to submit the 200 images you just uploaded (if you have embeded keywords and titles)... very simple.  123 RF is almost as easy as they don't have any catagories.... so i find uploading to them is generally well worth my time, despite the low earnings there.

I don't submit to feature pics... I haven't heard of much action there.. but if you hear different, I would be interested in knowing.

Anyone notice the today's post????

Talk about time warp...maybe he meant CanStock

he's actually reposting leaf's post from 2006. i think he's just trying to spam his south africa soccer link. (don't click)  ;)

time warp! i guess things hadn't really change that much. IS...grumble, grumble...

it's no longer ft paying .2 but veer and zoonar, and ss is still a no brainer.

Let's look at the $ contributors would earn at SF, compared to what I've been earning at FT as a Silver contributor (obviously base level contributors make less, and higher level contributors more):

Size / SF / FT

0.1 MP / $0.50 / $0.31
0.5 MP / $1.00 / $0.93
2.0 MP / $1.50 / $1.55
6.0 MP / $2.50 / $2.17 or $2.48 (4MP or 8MP)
12. MP / $5.00 / $3.10 (but 15MP)

So it seems that SF pays more $ to contributors, yet buyers pay less? Sounds like win / win to me, if they can be successful.

hey, i was about to write a similar post.

If IS, now the dominant microstock co., were to offer these terms, they will probably wipe out the competition. however, they're kind of into developing their 'exclusive' brand to achieve these ends. it may be higher commission for their exclusives, but not cheaper for their buyers.

the fact that stockfresh is doing it on both ends means that they are willing to take a reduction to their own bottom line in order to promote a business model that can be very successful in the long  run.

i will never forget that as a newbie my first xl sale on stx netted me $5, only $3 at is and elsewhere and the same $5 for an el at ft.

this is very strange, but not only did i have the bme in may, but sales are triple april's and 70% of is. this is after dt went into a coma five months ago, only starting to pull out in march. i have to say the patient is very much alive and kicking.

Veer / Re: Veer Dash for Cash
« on: May 27, 2010, 13:47 »
No, if they have been approved they should show up in your port and be for sale. If they are not there, you might want to send an email to support.

thanx!

Off Topic / Re: Whitechild became Dreamframer
« on: May 26, 2010, 19:42 »
I'd never heard the name 'whitechild' before, but that, combined with the skinhead appearance, concerned me.

in that case, telly savalas must be the father of all skinheads. you have to admit, whitechild, i mean dreamframer is a dead ringer.  ;)

That being said i think some of their keyword rejections are ridiculous ( i DID have pics rejected for just 1 or 2 keywords and no other flaws) and buyers who are looking for a concept can better have it fully worked out in their head.

ouch!, that would really annoy me.

Thinking as a buyer might help. If you were a buyer looking for for exemple "red flowers", would you like your picture to show up? Probably not when its just somewhere in the background

it's best to not second guess the buyer and IS is not only doing this but also cutting a very fine line. i had a sale of a photo on ds of some figs with one cut open in half, showing its red fruit. guess what? the buyer searched for 'red', only, not red fruit, red figs, etc. somehow this qualified for the red keyword.

General Stock Discussion / Re: First agency on iPad
« on: May 26, 2010, 18:31 »
never thought i'd contribute to gl, but now there's an incentive. even though the ipad is not a big market right now, it certainly has potential. it's great they've made it ipad compatible so you can download directly rather than go through the mac interface via the hub (a huge pain).

i don't automatically jump to racist conclusions whenever i see 'white' unless there are other negative connotations. i actually associate white with innocence and thus, innocent child. black, on the other hand, well, that's another kettle of fish...

i don't know why but dt has really bounced back for me. it's almost 3x of april and only a few $ short of is performance this month. it seems dt and ft are picking up the slack for ss and is. this is when you really appreciate the freedom of not being exclusive.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Photo collages not desired?
« on: May 26, 2010, 14:08 »
Making a nice "working" collage is a skill on it's own - you have to think about the concept and matching colors and shapes, and so on. Most people just slap a bunch of images together and call it a collage. Maybe that's why some agencies don't want to accept them.

i've been thinking about making a collage too, so this is a timely topic. the more successful ones i've looked at are well designed in themselves. there's something about them that makes it look not only totally pulled together but highly creative in the placement of each photo, size and shape.

i also felt collages are a good way to use those shots where only a part of it is attractive or usable since it won't need as much 'real estate' on the collage itself.

the elements could be literally be there and they'll still have problem with the keywords. in my case, asian ethnicity, medical procedure and number which are all visibly present.

it is the most maddening thing to deal with at is. however, i find that they only do this if they found other faults with your photo as if trying to add insult to injury.  >:( they've never actually rejected just on keywords alone, yet.

i'm having my bme at dt...but that's starting from a fairly low benchmark. may is going to be double of april though.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Sales At 123RF
« on: May 25, 2010, 15:17 »
Last month a BME. This month will be even better, helped with a $50 commission on an editorial EL. I like the direction 123RF is going....up. :-)

that sounds great. can you elaborate more on your editorial EL? is it part of their new editorial collection?

for my nikon d700, i found the tamron 90mm 2.8 macro to be really versatile. it does macro, portraits, studio, tight landscapes. it's lightweight and fast. i also like the nikkor 50mm 1.8 (super fast), but obviously can't do macro as well.

however, i found the nikkor 200mm 2.8 vrII  to be the best all around lens for when i'm outside, trying to sneak up on animals (or even people), events, sports, etc. the picture quality is truly wonderful. it's only drawback is its heaviness and inability to shoot closer than 3 ft.

Yes and no.  It has some of the characteristics of what we call "life".   I actually think it will be a long time before the remaining gap is closed.

The Member Page displays a few of your latest submissions to the site, you aren't able to choose which ones at the moment.

It is odd that yours would suddenly disappear-shoot an email over to [email protected] and I can probably sort it out.

well, compliments to the computer for choosing my best photos.  :) my port returned so i guess all's well.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Sygma bankruptcy
« on: May 21, 2010, 13:47 »
Is there a site that has a richer owner than Veer?  I don't see them going bankrupt, it is just as likely that they will buy istock.

you must be right (i guess you're referring corbis' deep pockets vis a vis bill gates), since their dash for cash is so unrestrictive compared to other's recent similar offers. ie deposit photos only offering .2 vs veer's (up to) $1.4/image, no time hostage (dp's 6 months tie up), no canceling the offer midstream, setting clear deadline, etc. they also have a responsive rep on msg which make you like and trust veer. if they have the money to purchase istock, go for it! (might be better than purchase photos outright)

on the other hand, sygma is also a subsidiary of corbis and they finally let them go...

149
or perhaps I still claim royalties through StockXpert and only have to use IS if I wanted to  upload new files to TS  ???

bingo!

have people checked their 'member' page lately, like today? is your entire portfolio missing? does anyone know if veer staff actually choose the four photos that appear on your member page or is it computer generated?
