Off Topic / Re: Hindenburg Omen (stock market crash)
« on: August 19, 2010, 15:22 »
Did you hear for Hindenburg Omen? Is it really going to happen this September?

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-08-13/-hindenburg-omen-suggests-another-leg-down-in-stocks-technical-analysis.html

the hindenburg omen has predicted every crash that occured (since 1987?). however, not all hindenburg signs will lead to a crash. i'm actually trying to convince a relative to pull his stock portfolio, but....you can't game the system.

by the way, the hindenburg omen did precede the horrific 2007 crash that led to the bank bailout and our current economic recession.

Veer / Re: Review time
« on: August 19, 2010, 15:16 »
for me, they've been reviewing in batches of 70-80 once a month. the acceptance rate was about 80% at the start of the dash, but now that they've bit off more than they can chew, it's complete, utter rejections. they're still reviewing my port as we speak.

addendum: it's a total bloodbath! i think they've just run out of cash. a promising start has ended in a crash. for those who're waiting for a review, you may not like the results.

53
you know, i have a compulsion to check my stats whenever someone reports a sale somewhere. but as they say, "Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead." (at least for me, since july 1st - now that's a record at 123)

magnum had an exactly similar situation and resolved it quite nicely. here's the thread. http://www.microstockgroup.com/istockphoto-com/contacted-by-an-istock-customer-price/

General Stock Discussion / Re: downhill trend all too obvious!
« on: August 11, 2010, 14:50 »
I started using google image search mainly out of frustration using the microstock sites.  Yes, it is more cumbersome but you can find some great "original stuff".  In most cases the owner will grant permission for free or for a small fee.

that's really great for you, but it doesn't help us contributors at all. to be quite honest, you don't seem like a bona fide buyer or designer who's willing to purchase others' honest hard work.

Hi All

Thanks for your really helpful responses.  I know it will be hard work but I am not going to be put off, I'm in to this for the long haul!

J

Crap.  I used to be better at this. ;)

ROFL  :D :D :D

aye, you've lost your touch, capt'n hook...i remember back in the days when the mere mention of sjlocke would send newbies fleeing from the board.

if the reviewers have been overly capricious, ie 100% rejection/100% acceptance at different times and i've finally had enough, i start to reupload my earliest rejected files. guess what? oftentimes they are accepted and actually sells. this is true for 123 and ss. this leads me to believe that there is no uniformity of standards among reviews or reviewers.

yeah, congrats, warren for making it to is. i assure you uploading was much easier before even though it was still a pita. i haven't tried deep meta, but may consider it now that i'm getting ready to tear my hair out.

shall i have the honor with the first corny reply, 'great avatar'? couldn't resist.

i do see a lot of stock potential here. instead of 'your text here', you could have it as 'your face here', your very own avatar.  :)

@Eireann
regarding uploading, it's gotten much, much worse. there's even a thead on ss complaining about it. http://submit.shutterstock.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=87820

Anyone who knows about big sites (which is probably most of us to some degree) will know that a new site is often much more about the structure and architecture than it is about the look and feel. And the stuff under the hood seems good so far. No major outages.

well, if this whole redesign under the hood is not meant to improve contributors' lives (and it hasn't), then i'm really curioius whether it has indeed improved the buyers experience. any buyers, buyer/contributors out there who's checked out this new interface? is it working better for you?

Hope we have a good Monday.  Otherwise, it will be better to cover the number with a piece of adhesive tape.

yeah, it's finally changed! i love mondays. the buyers always come back with a vengence.

but i'll keep a piece of tape for the weekends since the number isn't going anywhere on the screen.

i'm sure they're approving in sequence by the 'guage' and sharpshot's certainly higher than ours.

i'm not as excited as you all since i joined StockXpert past its glory days and the current hemera collection is doing a lot better on thinkstock than it did on StockXpert. freshstock may offer higher commissions but it better have a slew of buyers too.

wow, they've made uploading an even more horrible experience with a gazillion subcategories to choose from. they still haven't fixed the lost exif data either! that should be their priority.

i use firefox and i need to scroll right and left, for the page no longer fits neatly into the browser. this is a real pain....

« on: July 28, 2010, 14:48 »
July has been a good month for me on Veer 8 sales so far and some big ELs in the past 6 months or so. Very pleased with earnings overall.

downloads have certainly picked up since the dash and i hope the el trend continues, as you have experienced.

There are more tricks that don't add noise. But I was so stupid to give the soft light away. Shame on me ;-) Keep da secret, will ya?  ;D I also use it on models to get that 'special' glow.

yes, we need to keep these secrets to ourselves.  ;) unfortunately this is a public board.

i'll try it on my models too, in addition to landscapes.  :)

it's finally started!

for what it's worth, the ts buyers are just lapping up my formerly zero download files. however, lately,  the is credit buyers are reviving a lot of these old files too, forcing me to remove them from my ts arsenal.

« on: July 26, 2010, 17:04 »

You should be aware that this kind of images is not in demand in commercial stock though. The competition in HDR is very stiff and there are some great artists around you'll have to compete with.

but your version is probably more commercial than the original.

thanks for the instruction! i hope i don't turn into a 'soft light' monster on all my old photos that i am now going to tweek.

Your comments are most welcome, is it worth tweaking and resubmitting?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/andym8y/4830824287/#

Yes. Hint: soft light layers.

i like this version. how did you tweek it?

andych,
i checked the dt versions and none had your expansive beach foreground without seaweed somewhere. so, this is unique in it own way.

this must be the most out of focus stock photo ever. must've made  it through alamy qc on the coat tails of their checking only one photo out of the entire batch.

it'd be kind of funny if a (noncontributor) buyer showed up to critique our photos. i think it may even be more constructive.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Editorial on SS
« on: July 24, 2010, 17:03 »

Have you try some of editorials (sport) on Alamy?
If yes, how does it compare with SS.

I have not, Kone.  I was surprised by seeing them sell at SS and just have not taken time to size them for Alamy.  Plus, this is not hard news (current).

it's a good thing you didn't for editorial (as everything else) sells royalty free on ss, but anything with people are royalty managed on alamy. so, once it's been sold as rf can no longer qualify for rm (except zoonar).

General Macrostock / Re: Micro vs Macro criteria
« on: July 23, 2010, 17:50 »
Lisa,

I think microstock made allowed usages TOO broad - the covers, the print run and some other loose restrictions.  I'm sure the microstock model would be successful with more stringent rules.  It's too late to change that, but I still don't like this, yet I have to live with it.

You make a lot of sense Maria.  Would be great if the rules were tightened up, but I agree with you that its unlikely at this point.

Some help from the micros in enforcing the rules they DO have would be very welcome also.

+1

i can't wrap my head around the fact that some co. can use a sub for a billboard. i mean they're huge. it should definitely go by the square feet.

i have some celebrity and sailboat racing shots. they do quite well with many od's and one el. however, i'm sure they'd do much better at the macro agencies but they're on a 2 year contract with ss.
