Dreamstime.com / Re: What do you strongly dislike about Dreamstime?
« on: September 28, 2009, 12:41 »
If a better way to market my images suddenly comes along, I don't want them locked in at DT for 6 months.

it would only make sense if the new market requires your exclusivity. otherwise, why not collect the pennies till your time is up? (why do you all sound like jailbirds?)

for those who's fed up with the prices, with the reviewers and everything about microstock that annoys you, here's another viewpoint.

someone recommended me to a bigwig at a large company who needs some photos. right off the bat, he's trying to negotiate the price down, with loads of good reasons of course. second, he wants to see many photos before selecting one. i've never worked as hard in preparing a portfolio as i have for the micros. here's a real human being you're dealing with, not some nameless reviewer.

well, he only liked one out of the whole batch, and he's noticed it may be a little soft (it wasn't even at 100%!). you'd expect something like this from ss or is, but a non-photog in a business suit? are they in cahoots?

now i'll have to write a special rm licence just for this one photo (there're also model release problems) and i'm longing, just longing to go back and churn out my stock photos in peace.

you'll need to read his earlier posts.

i think their commission dropped from 50 to 30%.

...sounds like my credit card company...

however, you may have acted on principal, but the end result just were of no benefit to you. to be fair, is does have subscription sales and the commission on the per pic sold is the highest at dt.

to be quite honest, dt only accounts between 8-20% of total sales, which seems to be the same for others. so, it wouldn't make sense to go 'exclusive' at that level, unless you really, really like dt and doing it for purely sentimental reasons (which we will go into detail on another thread).

does dt make up a large % of sales for you?, if not, why get into a tizzy over such a small % of your portfolio? concentrate on the big fish, bro...

I had 2 maximum size sales of level 2 images today for .35 cents today, someone must be watching me too.

mine were credit sales. they're watching you for the wrong reasons.  :P

i swear i must have garnered some good karma for even wanting to start another thread. i had an extra large sales at dt immediately after weeks of no activity. someone up there is watching.  ::)

Nikon / Re: Nikons response to the Canon EOS 5D Mark II
« on: September 25, 2009, 09:49 »
thanks paulie for clarifying the differences between the higher end nikons and canons. it's all clear now! as for the canon 5d markII, are the pixels really sharp and noise free even at 100% at full 21mp? at what iso or low light conditions do the pixels start to degrade?

do you employ any specific tricks?

i read somewhere that it doesn't have the same 'face recognition' feature of nikon. so, trying to get that kid running around in focus may not be possible.

my understanding is that although the 5DMII truly has great images at full format, it's a bit slow and unweldy to use if you want to shoot news or sports (or carry it outside for action shots). so, i certainly hope nikon can come up with a 24mp camera before i jump ship and commit to better lenses.

thanks madelaide and xposurepro for your expertise. one company i'm talking to actually don't care about having releases. should i worry for them or is it coming back to me as the originator of the photo?

'one person's snapshot is another's stock photo.' i think confucius once said that.

anyways, it never ceases to amaze me that a photo rejected at most 2nd tier sites will actually make it through to ss or is and start garnering sales, and vice versa. it's hard to game this thing... ???

i know stock agencies are a stickler for not violating trademarks and getting model releases even for a man in a mask or a crowd of people. however, when you're working outside the stock arena, how strict are you pro photogs about these when handing over photos for a commercial project (ie a book or calendar, etc.)? do you provide these releases and/or airbrush trademarks? i'd be curious to know.

i find sharpening only helps the image seen at 100%, ie bringing the details more into focus. however, it also creates noise and artifacts. sometimes it's just easier to downsize it 20-50% where the focus is naturally sharpest.

i always aim to shoot with sharpness at 100% in mind. so, the above is only for when i've failed miserably.  :(

if this is for fotolia, the noise is not such a problem for them (at least in these photos). as for the first image, the focus on the glass in the foreground is just not sharp enough. in the second, the focus may not be in the right place and in the third, the colors may just be too artsy for them.

but i like the ambience of all the photos though.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Repeated rejection from iStockphoto
« on: September 15, 2009, 17:50 »
i only had one more image to be accepted by istock and i posted several pics here. sean (sjlocke) helped me choose the winning image (one i wouldn't have considered) and i was approved within the hour.

so, there's no harm in posting your pics.  :D

it was also not my prettiest picture and was rejected later for addition to my portfolio.

Adobe Stock / Re: I am so sick of Fotolia rejects..

actually, i've found that they really like food, drinks and veggies too, not flowers though.  also, well done isolations and anything with a home or recycle/green theme. so, it's not just feed the beast, but feed the inspectors ;D.

Photo Critique / 3rd pic for istock application
« on: July 14, 2009, 18:41 »
hi,

i'm trying to decide which photo to submit to istock to make up my third pic (two have have been approved, whew). this is my 4th try so i need all the help i can get! thanx in advance.  :)

the two approved were outdoor landscapes, so i'm trying something different for the third.
