Microstock Services / Re: Prostockmaster WOW!
« on: January 19, 2009, 22:28 »
So I see ProStockMaster asking for us to submit bugs and feature requests.  How?  I keep sending contact forms from their site and never get a reply.  Whats the deal?  Where do we send these requests?

Have any of you figured out how to sort keywords other than alpha in Lightroom?

109
I am new to using Adobe Lightroom so if this is simple, please don't hit me hard.

I am having trouble finding out how to change the sort order from alphabetical to "as typed".

Can someone help?  I have been looking all over the web for this answer.

I am using Lightroom 2.2.

Categories becoming optional I think is the best we could hope for.

Fotolia and StockXpert are the two for me that come to mind.

What made me ask this question was a while back I read an IS post in their forum about categories.  Many people wanted to get rid of them but some designers came in and said they use them.  Mainly they would use the advanced search and use both keywords and categories to find what they wanted.  I think it ended with that.

I don't use them anymore where I don't have to and have not noticed any issue.

I wish all sites would get rid of them, or at least not make them required.  That is one of the main reasons I like SX and 123.  Its so easy to upload there.  Fotolia would be easy too if they did not make you click each image just to move your keywords and click a checkbox.  It would be nice if they were optional at SS also.

Adobe Stock / Re: Are you wishing Fotolia to be the new Istock?
« on: January 14, 2009, 13:50 »
I don't despise Fotolia.  If I did I would end my relationship with them (although I have thought about it a few times in the past).  They sell ok for me with my relatively small port.  I just think they put their contributors last and can be a little too sneaky for my taste.  Again, just my opinion.

Microstock is not really even on the chart for me income wise.  This is just one step above a hobby for me.  I have had times of irritation with many of the microstock sites, except for Dreamstime.  I cannot think of a time Dreamstime has made me think negatively of them.  I sell my photos, not my respect.  Personally, this is how I would like to see the microstock big 7 (the ones I upload to now):

1. Dreamstime (just very happy with them, they are professional and fair)
2. 123RoyaltyFree (professional, fair, very easy upload)
3. Shutterstock (mostly good to contributors, I think they could still share more)
4. Bigstockphoto (no issues so far, share could be better)
5. StockXpert (few issues but reasonable, fair share mostly, easy upload)
6. iStock (a personality all of their own, what else can I say, should do better than 20%)
7. Fotolia (sneaky, contributors are the last thought, share could be better)

AGAIN, this is just my opinion and I do not mean to cast a negative shadow on any site.  I am not looking to get banned.  :-*

The only site on the right I don't understand is Fotolia.  I guess they treat customers better than they treat us.

I would not want any microstock site to turn out like IS (I guess other than IS).  But for the top sales spot, I am rooting for Dreamstime all the way.  Dreamstime has my respect out of all the microstock sites.  They seem to understand about putting customers AND suppliers first.

I feel Fotolia has no respect for their contributors.  Sadly, as the microstocks grow it seems to become the norm (except for Dreamstime).  But that is just my opinion and is in no way slander or bad mouthing them.  I am not looking to tear any site down.

I have my own business outside of photography and understand the "squeeze them if you can" mentality.  Its business; they have the power, so they use it.  If we as contributors found a way to join together and get back our power, it would be different.

In general, I think the sites are starting to settle correctly.  If you look to the right, Dreamstime is moving up, Shutterstock has held steady (and should for good reason), and iStock is dropping (probably from a non-exclusive perspective, if more exclusives put in their comments it would probably be different).

Right, thats kind of how I feel.  I understand the organization piece, but with keyword search you get closer to what you want from the start.  I find categories to be usually too broad and become pointless.  With stock sites in the millions of images, its just not relevant anymore.

I am mainly trying to find out is it worth the time to categorize the images I have or just submit and forget the categories.  My find is that if you can skip them, then do it.

This is the internet, search is king.  Are there any designers out there that want to give their take on this?

General Stock Discussion / Do categories matter?
« on: January 13, 2009, 15:56 »
Ok, so here is what I am wondering:

There are microstock sites that do not use categories.
There are microstock sites that have categories but do not enforce you to use them.
There are microstock sites that have categories and do enforce you to use them.
Then there are microstock site(s) that make you use categories and make you categorize your keywords.   :'(

So for the sites that have them but do not enforce them, do you use them?  Does it matter to your sales?  Do you use categories when you search for images?

I use to use them in the past where ever I could, but now I find it just slows me down.  Honestly, I don't think it matters that much.  But I want to know what you think.

General Midstock / Re: what do you know about PhotoSpin?
« on: December 04, 2008, 21:38 »
Ok, that kind of info is what I was looking for.  I see Yuri Arcurs' images and a few other big stock houses there.  I would love to hear more from people that are using them.  Their per image prices are not micro, but then they have the subscription plans that are really cheap.

I did a search for Yuri and found 94 pages of 100 images (that is 9300+).

His images there alone makes me wonder what the deal is.

I don't know, that is why I am asking if anyone has used them.

I remember when I started with ShutterStock, they were unlimited downloads.

Wondering the same thing?  I see other micro stockers there.  The signup page says 40% or 50%.  Anyone know more?

« on: November 18, 2008, 20:39 »
The tool sounds great, except for one thing; it's online.  Are you going to create a software package that does the same?  I would love to see a nice software application that would maintain per picture sales data for all sites.

Being online means I now have to give someone my account data.  Trusted or not, I do not plan on giving my username and password to any site.  Just as I would not give my bank account details to other sites.

Microstock News / Re: new site for finding keywords for photos
« on: November 06, 2008, 16:45 »
You could put the ads in a small frame at the bottom so they do not keep reloading with the code.  Then you could put some text for the related ads under it further down so it is hidden in the frame.  Just a thought.  Good work.  Have a good night.

I also put a note in my new blog about it.

Great tool.  Keep up the awesome work.  Looks like I have a new keywords tool to use now.

An I agree, you should put something like a donations button or at least some google adwords at the bottom.  Just keep the ads out of the way and the tool will still be great.  You should make something off the tool.  You did a great job.
