There are two competing business models in play here - those who make money from creating and selling images, and those who make money selling advertising and referral links from blogging about it.

Both are legitimate ways to earn income and neither is necessarily morally superior to the other.  However, for the blogging/referral folks to make money, they need to sign up as many people as possible to COMPETE with the image makers.

Surely it is not that hard to understand that the people whose LIVELIHOOD depends on selling images would be less than enthusiastic about encouraging or sharing information with the bloggers.

It has nothing to do with wanting to be helpful to newbies, BTW.   I get sitemails from newbies often asking for tips on lighting, photoshop editing, etc. and have always tried to be helpful and encouraging.  And I have seen other experienced people here do the same - including the ones in this thread.

It is one thing to help out a person who is really trying to learn, vs. providing blanket info to someone who is going to use that information to line their own pockets while simultaneously draining yours.

Like I said, nothing inherently wrong with making your money blogging about micro, just don't expect those that stand to lose out from your efforts to help you do it :)

Of course not those evil blogs, but what about forums?  It's not apples for sell in these banners.   ;)

This will be an ongoing battle till the end of time.  Its not just microstock, its everything that has a value.

The simple rule at play here is Supply and Demand.

If supply increases faster than demand, the value of the supply decreases.

Who is at fault?  Well, we all are.  Photographers, microstock photographers, camera companies, stock agencies, ...  That is why Unions were created, but that is always just a temporary measure.

What is the correct value?  There is no answer to this.  If people in the US can't make it cheap enough, maybe someone in another country can.  The stock photography supply is growing much faster than demand has or even will.  Again, whose fault is that?  As long as a dime can be made, someone will sell it.

Here is an example not related to apples:  When I was in school, Information Technology was on fire.  I had employers begging me to take jobs.  A friend and I opened a consulting company while in school for income.  Rates were great.  We could work just 10 hours a week to pay for school.  This went on for a while, then the economy took a hit.  Supply increased at a rate beyond demand.  Companies had to reduce workforce further adding to the supply of talented I/T consultants.  Rates dropped quickly to the point I stopped consulting.  I thought if I cant get $$$ dollars an hour its not worth it.  The supply continued, and jobs were now lost to offshore staffing companies for pennies on the dollar.  If we cant work that cheap, someone can.  Here we are today.

Ask yourself this.  When you go to the store, do you buy the product made in your country for $$ more, or do you by the product made in another country for $$ less?

Now make that product stock photography and make yourself an image buyer.

We are at a point in stock photography where a company spends more money finding an image than buying it.

Let's see, the saying goes "Don't hate the player, hate the game."

We can complain all we want about people sending in new photographers (if blogs and sites don't do it, Google and Bing or ads will, blame the agencies if you want), prices dropping (didn't the macros complain the same way?, and RM when RF came along), free photos (its not going away, and may be the future), competition (good or bad, it will always be there), .............  all day.

As long as someone can make money doing it, it will be there.  As long as there is a better way to do something, it will come.

If we lead or follow, it does not really matter; change will happen.

Some people are best as photographers, some people are better at marketing, some better at teaching.  Its all a business.  Photos are sold, but there is a middle man in every purchase.

For me, IS is the most frustrating site to upload to.  Not because of the process; because of the reviews.  I stopped bothering with them a long time ago.  Every now and then I toss a photo there to see how it goes.

I just do not know what to expect.

Cityscape photo rejected for keyword: business (rejected for that one keyword, thats it)
Model wearing a necklace that is a fake dog tag: image contains a license plate (even if it did, you can't even make anything out on it) the only text on it was the birthdate of his child.
San Jacinto Monument: rejected for keyword ( Battle (Historical War Event) ); I guess you have to be in the historical war event itself to use that keyword?

I can go on and on and on... so I don't anymore...

I guess the exclusives there do not have to worry about my images taking sales, although I still get multiple payouts a month with just 265 images.

wow.

0.03$ for a photo, it's almost as low as a click on an Adsense banner...

it this becomes the norm soon it will be more profitable to run web sites with images and banners all around.

too late, it already is

I have heard that the only people with bigger egos than photographers are surgeons.  I know a lot of photographers, and I kind of agree.

With that said though, I also agree that this forum is pretty calm compared to most photography forums.  If you feel abused here, check out some of the other big photography forums and you will come running back here for hugs.

This is the internet.  Take what you want from the information available.  Like sharply_done stated, the ignore button helps also.

I find that Leaf lets us get away with a lot here when it comes to linking and referrals.  I myself have taken advantage of that a few times and posted a link here and there.

With that said, most forums will not even let you post them in your signature.  I like that this site lets you post personal links, but we need to also give props to Leaf.  I usually have a link to signup under, but if not I use Leaf's.

I also think threads that just post referral links should be marked spam.  I have cast my vote.

I got mine today.  I still have some $$ in my account and affiliates bringing me pennies, but I requested that all of my images be removed.  They did and I will keep the account open just to see what happens.

Haha.  With all the referral links in this thread, I figured someone had.

Adobe Stock / Re: Increase in Credit Value at Fotolia?
« on: February 18, 2010, 19:18 »
I sent multiple emails.  None got me anywhere.  What I am upset about is that they just flat out don't care to discuss the issue.  The thread getting closed without any Fotolia response tells me that once again.

It's the same old thing.

I wonder if the dying of the issue is really others just doing what they need to do to go exclusive with IS?  It would be nice to hear from everyone again on this thread as to what they think.

The thread was closed at Fotolia.

Sad; very sad.  :-[

I guess this is why most of the big players do not get involved.  Now I just need to figure out what I want to do since most seem to have given up.

I have 1 subscription sale there, but I have not uploaded much.  I need to go back and finish doing that.

As Donkey from Shrek would say, "Pick me! Pick me!".

So I guess Fotolia will win again without giving us an answer.  Great.

Based on who it is and what they use, for me it's DT or SS.  Mostly DT.

As you can see in the forum there, thats already happening...

I think its a last attempt at a paycheck for the operators before closing the doors.

I use CS4 now to stitch my panos, but I use to use a great tool called ArcSoft Panorama Maker.  I had version 4 and it did great.  Its very easy to use for beginners also.

Now that I use Lightroom, CS4 is easy also.  I just select all the images I want to put together and right click.  there is a "Send to CS4 ..." option that makes it easy.

I could not find an affiliate link in this thread so here is mine http://submit.depositphotos.com?ref=1001512.

That's a joke of course.  But the affiliate link is mine and works.

They do seem to be spending some marketing $$$ because I have seen their banners on many sites before the affiliate program was started (including my site Microstock Photography).  This would at least say they have some cash to back the project.

I have given them a try and have been happy with the site and flow so far.  Lets hope they can bring the buyers when the site goes live.

Biting my tongue to keep from saying what I really think.  It would not be pretty.

It's just one more kick to the balls.  There will be many more no doubt.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Are U Mac or PC?
« on: October 31, 2009, 14:08 »
I like the Canon vs. Nikon threads better ;-}

I use both; but if I had to pick one, I would choose Windows (7).

My iCore7 monster system "built for Windows" cost me less than $1k.  I went looking for the same from Apple, but they did not have it at the time.  Just looking, not buying.  It would have been 3x the price easy.  If all you do is "creative" work then I would say either; but since I play some games, code software, run multiple businesses, Windows works better for me.

But really its Mac OS vs Windows since its all Intel based architecture now anyway.  Buy whatever hardware you want, then choose your OS (disclaimer: I believe you can only run Mac OS on "Apple" hardware per their agreement).

How long did it take to get a reply?  I sent in an error and have not heard back.

New Sites - General / Re: Clustershot.com

You can add me to that Sept chart.  I had my first sale there today.  It was from my site, which I link to clustershot as my portfolio; so it's a "checkout" sale from my site.

I like it.  Its simple, yet mostly has what we need (I have sent in emails requesting features). Editorial is a must with all the images there not model or property released.  I also vote for a usage limit or allow us to set them.

I like how the3dstudio does it where it defaults to editorial until its set RF.

I looked through the budget section and saw a lot of images I have seen on the micros.  Some I have seen on Shutterstock and iStock.  Wonder if they have sales?  It does not look like they are new to stock, just maybe new to microstock.

New Sites - General / Anyone submit to Media Bakery?
« on: September 12, 2009, 15:26 »
I have seen the site before, and they say they have over 800,000 microstock photos available.  I see many photos from micro submitters, but the copyright on the image pages say Media Bakery.

Anyone using them?  Anything selling?  What's the word on the street.
