I'm seeing big rises at Canstock lately, while things seem to have flatlined at BigStock and 123.  Intrigued about Deposit, but I'm not hearing much from the community in terms of real results... just a lot of hopes and dreams, like the buzz around Veer's launch.

Good luck... just be conservative in your expectations.  I've had about 25 designs there for 6 months or so, and I think I've seen three sales of $5 each.

I was all gung-ho about the business card site last summer when there was a bunch of discussion here.  I uploaded, I think, 25 designs and was hoping for great things.  Since then I believe I've had three sales at $5 each.  If things pick up, I might try to add more, but it's definitely a "wait and see" thing for me right now.

I haven't any sale on every agencies except SS, for a last 24h...

Something happening!

It's all right, it's just you  ;D. I've had sales on every one of the "top six" today, even poor old StockXpert.

Something is happening, and it's something good!  I'm on my way to a BDE... even StockXpert is doing outstanding today... will likely be my best StockXpert day in many months, possibly ever.

General Photography Discussion / Re: Giving away photos for free?
« on: February 04, 2010, 00:13 »
I have images on Flickr, all watermarked to encourage people to visit my website and hopefully follow links through to an agency to buy photos.  About once every few days, someone will ask me for a photo and I send a form letter response suggesting they consider one of the agencies, with links of course.

But about half the time, these requests turn out to be students, churches or non-profit groups and I end up giving them the photos they want at no cost.  Call me a sucker for a good cause.

But will buyers go to IS?

I believe many will, by default... following links or redirects from StockXpert.  Sure, some will decide they don't like ISP for whatever reason and look elsewhere.  But while many of us have biases for or against ISP as contributors, we can't assume buyers have the same misgivings.  I'm also a buyer and do most of my purchases at ISP.  Frankly, I know how tough it is to get stuff in as a contributor, and it gives me a sense that the overall quality is better than the other sites and I'll have to wade through less junk to quickly find a high quality image that meets my needs.

From the StockXpert forums.
Basically, we migrated opted-in files that we identified as being unique to StockXpert...

If dont see your opted-in files, be patient they will show up eventually.

I'm not sure I understand.  Will they automatically put your content in the site, or will they only do so for the ones they identify as "unique."  Other things I've read have suggested that these are "select" images, meaning someone is judging whether to let images in or not.

« on: February 02, 2010, 13:53 »
How do you calculate RPI? Is it $Yearly / (#TotalCurrentYear - #TotalPreviousYear) ?

I am already calculating my RPI on a daily and monthly basis.  That way you don't have to worry about your fluxuating port size.  I simply ran a sum of the column that holds my daily RPI to come up with my total for 2009.

I've always said RPI is the most important number to me.  It's how I forecast future growth.  As long as my RPI holds steady (and it has for as long as I've been uploading), I can predict with some certainty what I'll make as my portfolio size grows.  This keeps me motivated to upload every single day.

I thought I read that the owners were starting some sort of stock logo company. I don't remember where though, so don't quote me.

Everything there is up for subs now

I don't think that's true... I just got a $1.50 commission on a PPD download a few minutes ago.  I wonder if they'll continue right up until the 11th, so I should wait to do the transfer until then.  But what if the site is taken down before we can make a last-minute transfer?

BigStockPhoto is next :-(

You're right, but I would hardly feel the loss of BigStock.  In Jan, BigStock drove about 3% of my revenue, but StockXpert drove 10%.

We're all sad that we'll be losing money over StockXpert's demise, but in reality, those buyers are not evaporating.  They will simply go to another site to find what they need. Most will follow the StockXpert links to ISP, which poses a challenge for those of us whose ports at ISP are nowhere near as big as our StockXpert ports due to the upload restrictions.  We can't say we weren't warned... they told us last summer to get our ports onto ISP.  I've started, but it's going to take quite a long time.

187
I guess it's not all doom and gloom.  A buyer is not simply going to stop buying photos because StockXpert is gone.  He/she will find another source, most likely ISP since the StockXpert site will route there.  So the challenge for me and many others is to get all the photos I had on StockXpert onto ISP as quickly as possible (I actually started last Sept anticipating this day would come), but with the upload limits and very picky reviewers, that's no small feat.

StockXpert had been really picking up steam in January, returning to levels I hadn't seen since last Sept/Oct.  In January, StockXpert accounted for 10% of my revenue.  Feels like I just got a 10% paycut, and also lost a friend on the same day.

Make sure you keep tabs on what the original StockXpert founder is up to... he has dropped hints that a new site could be in the works... you can sign up to be notified of future announcements... http://www.dreamcsoport.hu/stockphoto/

General Stock Discussion / Re: Who's sending 1099's this year?
« on: February 02, 2010, 11:58 »
I was also wondering which ones to expect and what I should try to gather before doing my taxes.

So based on this thread, I should expect them from SS, DT, BigStock.  But none from ISP, FT, StockXpert, 123, etc?

Do you just go onto those sites not sending 1099s and print out your account summary for 2009 and report those numbers?

(This was my first year with payouts at all the sites, so forgive my ignorance here.)

I get a good estimate by calculating my RPI for each month. And then adding them up in the end of the year. So each month has its amount of images.

This is a sound method for calculating yearly RPI -- either add up a year's worth of monthly or daily RPI stats if you've been collecting them -- that way the fluctuation in port size is accounted for.  I hadn't done so until now, but just went through and added monthly RPI and came up with $37.61/image for 2009.

Couldn't it be that we are no longer getting JUI sub sales? I usually get 10+ every weekday, but today and yesterday I haven't had one. Only StockXpert subs and StockXpert PPD's

I think you've hit the nail on the head.  Looking into my daily breakdown, I see they're gone.

JUI sub stales must have stopped Jan 31 or Feb 1... here's my last several days of stats...

Jan 28 = 29 JUI sub sales
Jan 29 = 20
Jan 30 = 16
Jan 31 = 0
Feb 1 = 0
Feb 2 = 0

General Stock Discussion / StockXpert - What is going on today?
« on: February 02, 2010, 09:44 »
Are you seeing any downloads on StockXpert today?

I'm wondering if a switch was thrown somewhere at StockXpert and buyers aren't seeing the site today?  This is the first day in many months that I woke up to ZERO downloads.  (My average lately has been 10 or 20 by 7 am EST.)   Now it's nearly 10 am and it's still showing 0.  I checked to make sure my pics are still in the site, and they are.

And the past few weeks, I thought StockXpert was on the rebound, approaching the BDEs and BWEs I was experiencing up until last November.  Strange that everything seemed to vanish overnight.

We're nothing like as helpless as you seem to think __ don't be so defeatist.

I think we're on the same page.  Sounds like we both encourage the same thing... the empowerment of the contributor.

Your post does an eloquent job of drawing a line in the sand.  I say it's time for everyone to figure out on which side of the line they wish to stand and move there.

I just feel little sympathy for those who stand on one side of the line and whine about not liking it but being too afraid to move.

If you look at one of the later posts on their forum by FT UK office, it basically says that they do whatever they want and contributors can like it or lump it.

This is a no brainer.  FT, and all the other agencies, are in the position of power.  There's so few of them, and so many of us.  It's simply the law of supply and demand, and if you don't have the stomach for it, microstock is not the place for you.  We can whine all we want about not liking the terms at a certain agency, but the truth of the matter is that it is a business that is making decisions it feels is right to compete with its rivals, and as a vendor you have the power to accept their decisions or decide those moves are bad for your own business and walk away.  No one is forcing you to play by rules you don't like.  We can either choose to be victims and stay in a situation we feel isn't fair, crying the whole time, or be grown-ups and say "I don't like your rules" and stand behind our convictions and end the relationship.

« on: February 02, 2010, 05:02 »
My sales have been pretty steady there in fact since the price increase towards the later part of the month downloads have increased significantly even though I had no new uploads so think for some independents the price hike could be advantageous, it will be interesting to see how February performs. That said the same trend was also seen at SS, Fotolia and Dreamstime for me with increases towards the end of the month and well up on last year

+1, except for the no uploads part... I've been consistently uploading and pleased with the results in Jan.

I still think it is a big mistake paying us just $0.25 commission.  If they paid a bit more, like most of the other sites do, they would have a much bigger collection of images.

I think quantity of images is a problem few sites have to worry about these days.  If it becomes widely known that there's a shortage of images there, they will soon see a glut of contributors who think they'll stand out more and do well on volume if not on individual commissions.

that's why you will read "BMEs" all over from small but active contributors, while the large contributors seems to report a drawback or stagnancy. It's just statistics: buyers don't seem to grow as fast as contributors.

I'm still waiting to find out if this is true.  I've been uploading for 15 months, expecting things to plateau for me, but they have not.  When I began, I started tracking my daily RPI, hoping for it to hold steady for as long as possible so every new download adds real money to my take, rather than simply replacing images that no longer sell.  I'm happy to say that today, my RPI is at its highest point ever.  This means that almost every month has been a BME, but yes, I'm still relatively new at this.  Hoping that if I can keep diversifying my port and find different styles to approach new subjects I can maintain this growth for some time.  So far, the strategy has worked for me.

I joined Carbonite a few months ago and am now a big fan.  It automatically backs up to "the cloud" any new or altered file once a day.  So if I change something today and want to go back to the original file tomorrow, I can grab the older version from my Carbonite files.  (Yes, I know Time Machine on the Mac does this as well, but I also like the added protection that if my laptop or desktop are stolen, my stuff is still recoverable.)  Unlimited space.  I believe it's $55/year, but you can easily find offers that give you two months free.
