Photo Critique / PHOTO: CG Xmas Tree Rejection
« on: October 30, 2010, 12:28 »
Hello all,

Noobiness here, I'm hoping some of you can give me some pointers. I've had the following CG Christmas-tree shot rejected at istock for the standard composition reason: "We're sorry, but we found the overall composition of this file could be improved."

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

@adijr - the lowest commission for exclusives stays at 25%

Thanks alot for the answer! are you guessing this from what you've read, or did you see this somewhere specific? I'd like to give it a read and re-consider this whole exclusivity thing.

Thanks again!

Forgive this question which not many people will care about, but as an exclusive with the smallest portfolio around, what happens to exclusives with less than 2,000 credits?

I am still waiting for the microstock-aware fill where I select the whole workspace by CTRL-A, then let it synthesize an istock-aware image with the exact feathering and no pixel distortions, and a shutterstock-aware fill with no shadows. Of course, the image should be unique and very salable. I don't mind if it's slow. I can always have a beer while waiting.  8)

Hm, why didn't I think of that? Seriously. Starting up MATLAB...

55
For those of you who use GIMP, this is already available: http://o3.tumblr.com/post/470608946/photoshops-caf-content-aware-fill-unbelievable

I am not sure how it compares to the Photoshop filter, but it is free.

I couldn't get this to work very well (as in, the results aren't that great...). Does anyone have any other experience?

56
IS - 29% - Well below average :( again :(

Same for me, but everyone over at IS forums seems to be raving about their March BME...

Any photographer who sees the demo on content-aware fill and doesnt salivate needs to be checked by a mental health professional.

I'll believe it when I can actually see the pixels of the results.  Tell me the blades of grass match up, or the noise in the sky blends, etc. and then I'll think about an upgrade.

That's a good point, perhaps this won't be stock-quality... But from an algorithm point of view, I don't see why it shouldn't be.. and in the worst case, why you couldn't augment it with very little work to make sure the fix is stock quality. Either way it  will be a quick fix in many situations...

Thanks for the case link RacePhoto.

scaring... think about watermarks removal

oh my that's brilliant!
The technology is new in photoshop but its certainly not new in research circles, so that makes you wonder how much
those watermarks have been holding. I guess they should put a few forensics algos in photoshop now, or we'll all be
using errorlevelanalysis.com soon...

60
Looks interesting, but if that's the only BIG change from CS4, I'll be sticking to what I have now.

nah, I think they're just displaying examples of new features, like they did with content-aware rescaling.

pretty cool that they are finally putting it into photoshop :)

62
awesome, thanks for the feedback!

63
Thanks for the review and [future] videos!

Do you have any words on how the T2i performs at night (comparing with your HF11)?
I have an HV30, and am trying to see how the "vDSLR"s perform :)

Thanks,
adijr

I have under 30 images in the combined stock world I believe, and so I don't really look for them used anywhere.

One day I log into the internal page of an institute I'm affiliated with (Broad), and ....

Actually, it was probably from shutterstock where it sold very well (by my standards), but anyway...

Needless to say, I went ecstatic...

General Stock Discussion / Re: The Blame Game
« on: March 04, 2010, 00:21 »
Let me add to that question a little - If I'm learning alot and in a year or a few I become a pretty/very good photographer (or developer, I like some CGI stuff), and on top of that I know what sells; yet I upload very little (due to interests, other commitments, etc) - I'm still not a "pro"?

boy, this is hard terminology...

Thank you for starting this topic, I for one am thankful for this forum even though I am new - Its a fun read, very informative!

I also have a perhaps-related quesion:
it seems that people are differentiating "less-pro" (to avoid derogatories) people versus pros by the size of the portfolio.
Shouldn't we be measuring the user's level by something like RPI (or your favourite similar stat)...?

It feels a little silly to call someone with 10,000 images and 1,000 dloads/year more pro than a person with 100 images and 100 dloads/year... or am I wrong (honest question)?
Yes, they're putting more work into it, but ...

p.s. About me --- yes, I am new, and will likely remain "new" by some definitions - I've been uploading to IS for 5 months, and by that I mean I am uploading about a pic a month since my first batch of 10.
I like to try very new things (new to me... I'm sure others have done it). Its fun, and I apologize if anyone feels like this robs the industry in some way, but I don't think it does if my few images
are good quality.

p.p.s. thanks for the ignore feature, leaf!

[nvm, moving my question to another thread...]

I made almost to the penny the same in Feb as I did in Jan.  And January was not a good month.  I had hoped to see some growth.

We'll see what March brings.  Traditionally March is my second best month of the year, followed by October.  Having lost StockXpert, which used to be about 8% of my income, and not seeing those sales compensated for elsewhere, I am not too optimistic.

   ISP   40%
   SS   17%
   DT   13%
   Fot   19%
   BigStock   3%
   StXp   1%
   123   2%
   CanStockPhoto   2%
   Alm   4%

ETA:  Adijr, with stats like those why aren't you exclusive at IS??

I'm wayyy too new. :)  I don't have time to do much microstock, so i try to do few but quality shots. Seems to work...
Why not exclusive? waiting for my 250, but I have a strong feeling I'll be going exclusive as soon as I can, unless something drastic changes. IS is not only my best, but its consistent...

for more information (i like charts), my istock months:

Seems pretty consistent to me :) All others are very weird.

Why aren't you going exclusive? Isn't 40% close enough to the decision point? :)
And like cthoman said, February is shorter, so technically you made 11% more money per day :)

all time (since August 2009):

IS has taken it away.....

I have a few time lapse clips approved on pond5 now.  Quite like this one.  It also has my referral link.

St. Ives time lapse

That's about 300 shots, right?

I wished I had your patience.  I find time lapse videos very cool.

Yes, around 300 photos takes over 10 minutes but I can take some stills with my other camera at the same time.  Will do some longer time frame ones in the summer, it is too cold here now to be hanging around for hours.

Both your lapses are awesome, and over quite a long period of time!!!

Here's my only one so far, far smaller period of time - should I take them over longer periods of time?

On another note... I'm wondering, how come the video part of the site is so slow compared to the rest?

adijr

I really like yours, it looks like a good time lapse to me.  You could try some longer time period ones, I am going to when the weather improves here.

Nice port you got there... Do you usually make more sales from timelapses or simple activity like http://www.pond5.com/stock-footage/281997/walking-over-stepping-stones.html ? Anyways, good stuff, keep it up!

Site Related / Re: What do you wish MSG had more of?
« on: February 24, 2010, 13:10 »
I'm a stats junky, so I'd love more statistic. It would be nice to get anonymous site stats from users. Maybe an average site earnings or something like that. I don't know if it would work, but it's just an idea.

Definitely agree with this, more stats. We as users could make them, if people will often participate. I feel like the group here can offer some nice information.
I suppose we could always just use posts with polls, or surveymonkey.com or something.

A little about short-sightedness: an article in newsweek from 1995

Not to claim that if you don't agree with video as the future you're wrong, but when you're wrong, you can be very wrong...

74
13 files online :) 1 in queue, queued since November. All in just 5 months! (Yes, this is just for fun...)
Can I get the lowest-upload-per-month-at-microstockgroup prize now ? :)

following averil, I checked my position on istockcharts, achieving 12970!
I should really read this forum less and try to upload my 14th...

adijr

p.s.: waiting to get to go exclusive, then I'll really unroll... maybe even get to 20 pictures eventually!

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Strange rejection due to deleted keywords...
« on: February 12, 2010, 00:33 »
I'm not sure about this, but:

While you've erased the keywords for purposes of the site, the original IPTC probably (?) stays with the file - that is, the keywords you add or delete are only seen on the istock website, but there is no change to the file. So if the reviewers look at the file information as well, they'll see the 'wrong' keywords.

just a suggestion
