Newbie Discussion / Re: Yet Another Newbie
« on: November 18, 2009, 23:25 »
I think everyone has to go through the Newbie phase in everything.  :)
But those 3D things are really really incredible, I am so impressed! Maybe I can get the chance to try it one day. (I can make Austrian/Canadian puzzle pieces...;-))).
The high-key headset girls are what stock agencies and buyers ask for...that's why there are so many. White backdrop must sell like crazy these days ;-)).

I think you would be wasting your money, go with what Leaf suggested.

You mean which of his suggestions? The Alien Bees?

Actually I was thinking to remove the backdrop (make it by myself), so I'd have only the following:
- 2 strobes 150Ws with sync chords
- 2 softboxes 16"
- 2 reflecting umbrellas
- 2 light stands 7"
- 5-in-1 reflector
- reflector stand

269 USD.

Alternative:
something like this plus some accessories:

Man I am getting really confused...  ???

Thanks for all your suggestions!

I think that image processing error means if the image hasn't been uploaded correctly or is in some way corrupted, so that they can't open it correctly. It is not an image quality problem I think.
Just try again.
I have made the experience that only the marked file is the problematic one - I submitted 4 with one that they criticized, so I only substituted it, uploaded it together with the 3 of the time before, and I was accepted.

Hope this helps,
have a great day!

Thanks for all your answers!

I am actually planning to do this in a part of a room (i only have a small apartment), so I think I don't need tons of power, am I right?
I was also thinking to discard the backdrop stand and set: I can just build it by myself made of wood, very cheap, or in the worst case stick it to the wall for the beginning. I will move in some months, I don't know where, and so maybe I can also buy that later...

I would like to use my SB-900 as the main light, and I need one or two lights to blow out the background. 1 or 2 and 150 or 300Ws for a small space?
What do you think about Alien Bees, and is it their effective or their real Ws that counts? But maybe they are too expensive for me. If I needed only one it might be fine...

The prices in ephotodiscounters look very good. Yesterday I was in our photo store, and everything costs like at least double, if not more.

Thanks!

Welcome!  :D

Where do you come from? I am from near Salzburg. (Now living in Canada)
I admire people doing 3D work, it's amazing. :-)

Hello,

I have made a bit more research on the lighting equipment I might need...
What do you think about this set?

http://www.ephotodiscounters.com/product_info.php?products_id=221
http://www.ephotodiscounters.com/product_info.php?products_id=5
http://www.ephotodiscounters.com/product_info.php?products_id=231

It would give me:
- 2 strobes 150Ws with sync chords
- 2 softboxes 16"
- 2 reflecting umbrellas
- 2 light stands 7"
- 5-in-1 reflector
- reflector stand
- backdrop white
- backdrop black
- backdrop support 9"

for 388 USD.

What do you think? Can I save on something, like making some backdrop or backdrop stand myself?

I would also need a stand for my SB-900 flash - what is generally used?

Do I need two strobes or is one enough?

Oh and do you know a comparably cheap store in Canada? I have the shipping and tax fear with this Californian one ;-)). Actually I go to California in 10 days, but I doubt I can bring these things home by plane ;-)))).

Thank you!
Simone

well i don't know...but this post was a "what do you LIKE about DT" post...  :-[  ???

anyhow i like DT (with my limited experience). Compared to FT you are far less anonymous, you can at least write down who you are, whereas in FT you are just a link to click on. For me personally moreover i have had >70% subscription sales on FT and none on DT so the earnings are better at DT, but this experience is just limited as I started very recently.

be happy!

mine:

$1.01    medium     (RF)
$1.32    large    (RF)
$0.64    small    (RF)
$1.47    medium    (RF)
$1.68    medium    (RF)
$0.36    extrasmall    (RF)
$2.40    maximum    (RF)

i guess i can't complain, no subscription sales...  :o

184
hehe....let's track him down ;-) :-)

185
oh yeah that sounds kind of disappointing... 35c is really not worth all the work.... maybe a specific designer with a subscription package likes your work and downloads a lot from you.

186
hm i haven't had subscription sales on DT yet....that indeed seems disappointing. on FT i have almost only subscription sales, large size for 30c! that's kind of sad....for the maximum size on DT i got 2.40 instead....that's 8 times as much! maybe it needs more time to form an opinion.
in general, however, i prefer DT over FT.

187
I also like DT.
First of all they're my no. 1 sales (up to now, I just started, and I haven't applied for SS and IS yet).
Second, it seems to be a bit of a mixture with a social networking site, that's not bad to make contacts. It shouldn't get too much though, some of the blog posts are a bit ...
Third, they also seem to like non-microstock oriented pictures, such as landscapes.

Funnily they do not accept very much my microstock-oriented pics, whereas Fotolia does. Consequently I sell almost only the non-accepted things on DT in Fotolia and vice versa... ::)

Alamy.com / Re: strategy between RM and RF

oh yes, for RM photos on Alamy and RF photos on microstock I understand....
what i meant is more like if people put the same images as RF on microstock and RF on Alamy...

Alamy.com / same RF photos on micro- and macrostock?
« on: November 07, 2009, 20:36 »
Hello,

I am trying to use the poll feature... I hope this is not an offensive question: I would like to see how many people put the same photos on micro- and macrostock. Some say it's not professional, others say why not, markets are different. It'd be interesting to know what you guys think!

Alamy.com / Re: strategy between RM and RF
« on: November 07, 2009, 20:33 »
thank you very much for your answer!

yeah, i also sold landscapes on microstock, one is my second best seller.

maybe i should just keep the good ones for alamy, and where i have to crop or more generic shots for microstock.

it is hard to find out as you dont sell anything very fast, so you might start thinking it would have been better to put those pics on microstock because on macrostock you see no income for a while...

many people keep saying you shouldn't upload the same RF pics on both macro and micro. what is the percentage of people doing that? I setup a poll to ask people, i hope this is not offensive. your forum is really great, thanks leaf!

that said...let me congratulate guys here. i love this place on the internet. you are friendly, intelligent, polite people, and so willing to help. if one thinks that this is for making money it is quite surprising that people don't go against each other. it makes me very happy. (sorry that was off topic).

Alamy.com / strategy between RM and RF
« on: November 07, 2009, 10:41 »
Hello,

It's probably an old topic, and i have found various entries about this in the search...but still...
recently I got accepted at Alamy, and now I am kind of reconsidering where I put which shots and with which license. I have just recently started, and so my pictures are not yet extremely stock-like, and on the microstocksites I have mostly landscapes and other nice things (weirdly they seemed to accept them more!).

so now i have to find a strategy. should i, in the future, put all my landscapes and nice travel pictures as RM on Alamy and only "cheaper" microstock stuff on the microstock sites?
How do you handle that?

Thanks!
Simone

Computer Hardware / Re: looking for monitor
« on: November 06, 2009, 14:58 »
oh wow thanks...unfortunately it seems not available, open box neither. never mind, I'll find a solution. :) mike's computers gets them next week (i called) and ships for free, so it is just 635$ overall.

lisafx: i buy this for imaging... yes, you are right. others said the quality of the cheaper ones is also ok, and they are also IPS panels, so I thought it was fine...

Vonkara: Bestbuy and Futureshop don't really have those monitor models. :-( they're too much consumer oriented...

Computer Hardware / Re: looking for monitor
« on: November 05, 2009, 08:56 »
yeah, i think you are right. the only thing about the dell is the low resolution....
so what do you think about these two? they're 23 inch, so already have the higher resolution and are IPS/PVA, and are at reasonable price.

Samsung F2380
300$
cPVA
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/office/monitors/professional/LS23NVTABW/ZA/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=spec

NEC EA series 24 inch
480$
IPS
http://www.necdisplay.com/Products/Product/?product=223ad6db-baf6-46db-82e8-bfb2571cf178

A 22/23 inch at reasonable price with IPS/PVA could be perfect I guess.

Thank you!

Canada Computers looks cool. We don't have that in Quebec, but they ship here and I checked, I'd only pay GST, yay!
But they don't have the 245T in the list. :-( And none of the others I liked.

I found Mike's computers, that's in BC and I also only pay GST, moreover no shipping, so allover it's 635$...
https://www.mikescomputershop.com/syncmaster-245t-wide-black-p-2518.html

What do you think?
However, there is still the cheapo 22 inch option. I really don't know what to choose...

Thanks for all your suggestions!!

so...i am coming down to either a cheap monitor (22"), Dell Ultrasharp 2209WA, 250$, or something like the 245T, 650$.
is it worth the huge difference?
what the 245T has that the other one doesn't is higher resolution, bigger size, and HDMI. I can't imagine a 22 inch monitor with 1680x1080... it's the resolution of my 15 inch laptop!

Hi eppic,

actually I am in Quebec....vivent les taxes....
i have never understood this completely. when i order online i have to check where i live, and taxes are calculated accordingly. but sometimes i only get charged the 5% (i think that is GST)! how come? how can i do that, which shops are like this and which not? (for a monitor this means a lot of difference).
sorry the stupid question. I am Austrian originally. We have our taxes included everywhere, and you pay what is written, always. Now that's much easier!!!!

BTW the monitors at Vistek are horribly expensive! Except a few Eizo FlexScan ones, are they good?
