General Photography Discussion / Re: Giving away photos for free?

It's your image so if you're happy with $25 then fine, but they're ripping you off and they know it, especially as the book is already published. You could try informing them that the amount is not even 10% of what should be paid and unless they come up with a better offer they'll have to recall the printed books.

The more people are allowed to get away with this the more it'll happen.

actually i dont think it is published yet...i hope :D From my flickr anyway they can only get a small sized version (i have disabled downloads and so on), so I think they can't use it like that.
it seems that the person that wrote to me is not very well informed and just makes her designs or so. the publisher should be informed however.

yes, i actually want to point this out that photography is not just a free business! I dont like that it has become something "for free" due to the internet and google images and all the rest. if i am professional or not, people have to acknowledge this profession and value it!!

thanks for all your answers....you are very nice people.

so how should i formulate all this, how do i make such a contract?
can i formulate an RM license and say that it has to be licensed again if for further use?
I guess I'd accept the offer. I just don't know how to set it up...
Thanks for all your help!!!

So this is the answer... a bit weird.

Hi,
thanks for your message
I asked the Publisher and he told that he didn't have the special budget for the photo. He can pay only 100 polish zlotys its about 25 dollars
I know it's nothing....I feel really so embarrassed.... I just make third book cover for this publisher, I did't know him very well
A book is one from the set "Hellinger library": "Bringing the roots of organizations to light" Jan Jacob Stam
I attached link to materials about exactly this book
www.hellingerinstituut.nl/articles/article_03.htm
The print run of this book is ca 2.000 copies
I hope You decide to publish your photo on cover this book. For penny this time, but I make projects for others publischers too. They sometimes pay for pictures nothing, sometimes more.

sorry for my english
if you are still interest to give me permision to use your photo please send me your mail adres and I'll send you the project of the cover

best regards

should i do it?  ???

I wrote a message to them...
I found out that this is about a book _COVER_ project of an already published book. And they don't want to pay for a cover??

Let's see.

Are they worth uploading to and is it hard to become an approved contributor?  And from reading the posts it sounds like you're getting paid per upload if I read that wrong, forgive.  I looked over there and didn't see any info on it.  I'm looking to expand my reach.  I'm down to 5 stock sites and this one sounds interesting.

Thanks,

Anita

for me it was easy to get accepted. just dont forget to activate that promotion button if you want your 0.20$ per photo.

English skills are now longer a skill it seems. The work I do full time is continually frustrated because of ICT being outsourced to India and others where the programmers write code and put in poor spelling. Then the systems will only function if you have a good handle on "Engrish".

we foreigners try very hard to speak it well  ::) ...
see we have to learn your language perfectly, while for you it's just your mother tongue! i wonder how it would be if anyone had to learn german that perfectly.  :'(

Ask them what they have to give to you for free.

Exactly!

hmm...i don't understand exactly what you mean....  ::)

Have you already given them permission to use the image? it sounds like you may have already since they said they would give you credit

no, i haven't replied at all yet. they just asked for my real name for the purpose of the credit line.

thanks for the pricing list.

hm thanks for all your opinions. :-)
For me this is actually also an ethical issue towards the world of photography...
I mean with all this internet stuff people get the feeling they can just google things and come up with images or steal them from flickr or so...
it shouldn't be for free, many many good photographers make a living out of this kind of activity, and it should be honored!

so how should i formulate a proposal of payment or how do you usually do that? sorry if i ask too much.  ::)

they asked me for my real name (haven't given it on flickr) for the credit line, so it seems to be at least that kind of fairness. well i can ask at least if they're going to pay me.

Hello,

I've got a question to all you really professional photographers. Sometimes I get asked by people on Flickr if they may use my photos in some place. Until recently I was just nice and gave it to them. But... should I ask for money?
I got this flickr message that they want to use my picture in a book about a German psychotherapist...it's a (nice) picture of Chinese Rice fields...only thing is I tooik it with my P&S, so it is not THE type of quality.
What would you do? Not sure they'd pay? Maybe they'd just use another photo, and in some way I'd be however proud to have my mediocre picture in a book, as I am not really professional?

Thanks,
Simone

Well, I'm sorry to say adding the host IPs to my host file didn't really correct the problem. This afternoon I couldn't get on.  :(

hmmmm that is weird. as long as it's just once or so maybe it's another problem not related to the hosts file.
sometimes it is possible that antispyware alters the hosts file because some malicious programs may use it to redirect you to their sites. maybe you installed something new.

Pretty funny. I went to a hotel with wireless yesterday to watch the playoffs and I couldn't get into the site. Not found same as you. I went in and added the Google public DNS server in the IPTC settings and guess what? No luck, no access.  :(

Maybe the hotel net doesn't allow you to use another DNS server. They sometimes have all sorts of restrictions because it's a public and hence more risky place. But it is just a guess.
Did you try the hosts file? I think that way it should work.

just a thought here...i use two separate isps, one connected via ethernet and the other through wifi. it's only the latter that i have a problem with on occasion. could it be that most of you having problems are connected through wifi or that could be the source of problem.

i'm totally technically challenged, so just throwing out a thought...

well if it is two different ISPs they use two different DNS servers, and one could have the correct IP stored and the other not, so that is indeed possible. if you do the hosts-file thing it should be ok with both.

Software - General / Re: PC problem: WinXP, perhaps hardware
« on: January 24, 2010, 17:29 »
My experience is that antivirus, spy searches, registry cleaners do not help, especially free versions...

Windows always work  worse and worse after installation. That's why I reinstall  it every 3-6 months, sometimes often ... This is the only cure for functionality and speed ...

That's a bit extreme !!  :o

I agree they work best when fresh ;) but even so !?  If u keep it tidied, it shouldn't be a problem for years :)

You could of course make a FULL backup after your fresh install, then u only have to RESTORE when u feel the need !  MUCH faster ;)

I also reinstall very often, 3-6 months. It just becomes horribly slow, especially under Vista this was the case. Win7 seems to be better, but still I needed to reinstall just a few days ago. And no, I don't install tons of useless stuff...It is just microsoft. Same as the fact that it can never run for long at once, you have to reboot to take lots of load from the system. I have Linux as the main OS and there it never happens.

simone,

You should (as long as you have the W-8BEN done and accepted) now no longer pay any tax on any sales. Fotolia were insiting before Christmas that we had to get an ITIN number as well but have backed down on this for the time being while they look into it a bit more.
You should also get a rebate of any tax you have paid.
If fotolia come back and say we need an ITIN we will have to apply for one via the IRS in the States for which, amongst other things, we will need a letter POSTED to us by fotolia on headed Fotolia paper stating our account number.
A lot of us on Fotolia have requested the letter anyway so we can have it at the ready if Fotolia do indeed change again.
What I would do is contact support and ask them to send you the letter you will need in order to get an ITIN number and when you get it keep hold of it until you need it or not as the case maybe !!!
And if you are still paying tax on US sales even with the W-8BEN approved let Fotolia know.

Hope ive made sence here and this has helped you out a little

Warren

Thanks thanks thanks and thanks again! :) i wrote to support and wait for my letter. :) you are the best!

Phrase   L   T   Count   Views   Sales      V/F    D/F    Rating
boat    GB 1.00 94037 142881 21858   1.52   0.23   0.35
FT SS IS BS DT- GI

I think L=country, V/F=views/photo, D/F=downloads/photo. It seems to be derived from another language, could be German.
I don't know for T and how the Rating is calculated. I think it gives a measure for how effective a keyword is or so....

Actually the guy who made this is a microstockgroup member, I think you could just PM him (and tell me then  ;D)

i mean in the picNiche bar, from left to right, there is the refresh button, then that number, then FT earnings, then SS earnings, IS earnings, and so on.

Simone,

As it stands at the moment with Fotolia if you live in a country with a tax treaty with the US you just fill in the relavant W form leaving the ITIN number off in my case, UK, it was the W-8BEN form.
If and when Fotolia decide we do after all need a ITIN number then you will have to request a letter from fotolia to submit to the IRS along with your passport and i think its the W-7 form !!!
At first Fotolia where isisting we all need an ITIN number but after a lot of debate this was put on hold and Fotolia are now looking into this. Quite a few people have requested the letter from Fotolia and have now got the letter (me included) just in case it is needed after all.
This maybe different as you live in Canada not too shure, Hope this helps a little and I haven confused you even more !!!

Warren

Warren, thanks so much for your help! I am sorry I am a bit naive on this, but as my (few) sales picked up a few days ago and i received this tax e-mail, I also filled the W8-BEN form.  :)
I stated Austria now, just to be sure, as I am not a Canadian citizen, and it went through. But now - they say I also need an ITIN for 0 tax withhold - what is the status now, do I have to get an ITIN? And if yes, how do I request that letter?

Thanks for your help and sorry for the silly question.
