Illustration - General / Re: how to 'frame' eps vector
« on: April 06, 2013, 08:53 »
why dont u create a white box the size of the art board underneath your artwork in illustrator. do all your iptc data on the eps. save as eps. Leave that file open for the time being. open the same eps file you just saved on photoshop and save it as jpeg with all the iptc data already included. After you save the jpeg, goto your eps file which you still have opened at this point in illustrator and delete the box you put and save. this is my work around for files that have isolated on white...

i think they need to step up their search functionality to get more buyers to commit to their site. Right now, i dont even know if there is a thing as best match or popular or new images. Did some random searches and the results aren't impressive at all. I am not sure if the quality content is just not there or the search system isn't all that complex.

But how does one provide an original when they create it entirely with software? If they want releases like this they need to require them for every single vector submission. Not some weeks and not others. I can make ink drawings and ink-like drawings. They can't tell which one has an original. So then they've got to require everything has a release. To me, this is unprofessional conduct.

Since dropping my crown, i've been communicating w one of the content managers and was told that now silhouettes even need property release. Seems like they are tightening reviews which i think is a pain but good on the overall nature of this business. harder to abuse copyrighted content.

At istock, they wanted you to take screen shots of your work in progress. It was a pain and that whole process prevented me from even designing for istock submissions.
I always thought istock had it a little too strict that prevented me from creating cool digital files that i had a hard way of proving i made it.

General Stock Discussion / Re: 3 sites you should NOT support
« on: April 01, 2013, 19:42 »
I don't know, I feel if you aren't make more on iStock than the other sites you are doing something wrong.

Theres a lot of factors involved in how much money you make in one agency vs the other. I think the biggest factor is competition. If your particular style or niche market is suddenly saturated with competition, you will see your download numbers go down unless your already at the top 10% of the shooters/artists... This is especially true of the vector market because i have seen the overall quality rise on both SS and istock dramatically over the last 5 years. Vector artists who did well earlier (i would say 2005-2010) did really well due to almost no competition. Now there is more competition so the share of the pie is getting slimmer.

I can understand IS exclusives (and recently ex-exclusives) thinking that the world is ending...

You have to give people more credit than your narrow view of exclusives or ex-exclusives. My world wasn't ending, it was pretty obvious to me the buyers were leaving istock as well as other non istock content flooding the site that decreased my downloads. The good times are over and they were good while they lasted because i took full advantage of that situation when it was available to me.

It just sounds like you think we are all poor naive tools with that type of statement. You might have your own reasons for staying independent, but please don't lump me and others in that one dimensional category you see the exclusives in.

Im curious to know how much of it is due to more competition from guys like me that have dropped the crown? There is a longer wait period now than 6 months ago to have your files approved on SS. I think a lot has to do with file visibility with all the influx of new content.

My proven sellers on istock has jumped to the first page in search results on SS in about a months time which i am really happy about. Lets say we have 10 more contributors w similar good content that is taking more room at the front. Maybe the image that was getting you 20 dls a month on page 2 has moved down to page 3 and getting you 5 dls now. Just speculating of course =)

208
And that's fine, lots of people have issues with their pricing. But why jump into false accusations and conspiracy theories? Why not just say you don't like their pricing and think they're bad for business?

I think its fair to say a lot of contributors read these forums. If any part of my previous posts (or false accusations according to you) prevents a contributor from signing up on vectorstock, I feel it is a small victory for everyone involved in this industry.

What would be the difference between vectorstock and SS if they had the same images? Cheaper price for the buyer. I am not talking about what goes in your pocket this month. Buyers dictate where this industry is going. The more contributors hear stories of how much money your making off this site, the more will join which will lesson your current downloads but attract new buyers due to a bigger library.

I will tell you another wild conspiracy theory. You know who's a resident of new zealand? Kim Dotcom, the owner of MegaUpload (the site that got shut down). How did they make hundreds of millions? off stolen copyrighted content. There's a whole network of unscrupulous businesses operating online and i sure don't need any proof to know that.

I dont think vector stock is a legitimate site. Probably an offshoot site from the same hackerz that illegally download these images w stolen credit cards. They probably amassed so much free illegal downloads in the beginning and decided to sell these things themselves. Its like laundering dirty goods. Who wouldn't want to profit off free electronic data if your a crook? ...

Any proof of that? I've never heard of a case where they've been suggested to be populating the site with stolen content that they acquired.

...This site has a section on virus notice? Come on, your giving yourself away now that you guys are hackers..

Having a virus warning on a stock site is a bit odd, since stock assets can't carry viruses, at least not vectors and JPGs. But does that mean that they are "hackers"? Kind of a stretch...

Look, I'm not defending their business model, their pricing, etc. But let's keep the conversation in reality. We have no proof or reason to suspect that this company is anything less than legitimate. I'd consider the virus warning just some overprotective legal speak that is strange and unnecessary, but harmless.

Its just my thoughts. I have no proof but just because its a web site doesn't make them a legit company. I don't think my ideas are far fetched when we live in a world with scammers and scam artist everywhere looking to make a buck. Do we need proof for it to be a reality?

My comment for them to be hackers might be far off from the truth but it is entirely possible and in my eyes probable.

Its clear that this company doesn't care about how it makes its dollar because they have no respect for the artist for valuing the work for $1. I would be cautious in giving any financial information to these crooks. EVERYONE SHOULD BOYCOTT THIS SITE!!! It is just hurting the vector stock industry!
Your shooting yourselves in the foot by having your work on this site.

Is selling subscriptions that much different? I don't see how one is an absolute abomination and the other is just how you earn a buck. Both are based on the concept of getting enough volume to make it profitable. Looking at VS's credits, you have to buy at least $25 worth of credits to make a purchase.

I'm not defending Vectorstock. I just don't really see a drastic difference between it and a subscription model. Both severely undercut the market.

The difference between subscription and vectorstocks pricing scheme is that the buyer is paying a lot more than a dollar when he buys a subscription plan starting at $249 a month. The lowest you need to spend on SS is $19 for one single image.

To the buyer, $25 for 25 images is a great deal. Vectorstock is getting the buyer used to thinking he can get decent images for a buck. That buyer mentality hurts us all in the long run and i'm doing my best to slow that tide.

I have been against subscription prices but the reality is that i am independent now and I would be foolish not to put my images on SS. I have been looking at SS images for the past 5 years and the quality has been getting better and better every year. I think this is another reasons buyers are flocking to SS. They have just as good quality images as istock.

One of my images i uploaded last month on SS got me 39 dls so far. thats $9.75. i cry and laugh at the same time since i was making over $10 a dl for that vector image on istock at 35% royalty.

I am pretty sure istock will continue to lose buyers so that is why i decided to go independent late last year.

211
Hmmm. just checked on the site. So they claim they are from new zealand. I wonder how strict the copyright laws are there.

This site has a section on virus notice? Come on, your giving yourself away now that you guys are hackers. Which other agency has any text on viruses? At the very least there is no inspection process and you can upload all illegally download warez you got to this site.... The sites that contain viruses are usually the seedy sites that has illegally obtained material being given out for free.

Think about it people, these guys are crooks.

I was having issues as well. Now as an indie, I am having the task to re- prepare my vector files to upload to as many different agencies as possible.

I make a white box the size of the art board and lock that layer. Then the art goes on a layer on top.

There is still hundreds of vector eps files I need to make adjustments to like included iptc data to. I never needed to do it when uploading to istock exclusively.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: No downloads in two working days!!!
« on: March 16, 2013, 08:52 »

It has picked up for me this month.  Especially with the dec/jan gi sales.   Maybe they are helpling exclusives in the best match because the survey asked a lot of questions that would show a conern about losing exclusives.

It would be smart of them to wake up to what losing their exclusives means.  Recently it has seemed they don't care about losing exclusives at all, which I have found baffling.

Unfortunately, the graph I was referring to as being alarming was Shadysue's, and she's still exclusive AFAIK.

My sales at IS are looking better this month, at least by recent standards. Even so I'm still projected to be over 20% down on March 2012.

I thought i was going to take a hit when i became independent this january but it seems like the amount of downloads hasn't really dropped much at all going from exclusive and indie. It is just the commission cuts thats painful.

I don't know if there is a favor for exclusives in the best match any more.

215
Im around 55% sub sales and 9% single image sales for this month.

216
thnx for the input! hope other chime in with their stats so i can get a clearer picture of what to expect

217
What percentage of your months total income comes from single image sales? Being new on SS, the downloads are so much more than when i was exclusive on istock. Does anyone see more than 25% of their months income on single image sales? is there a trend that this percentage is rising or falling?

218
Playing devils advocate here but what else did you expect by creating something that looks like a logo and selling it on micro?  ;)

219
i just started submitting my vectors at SS last month. about 70 vector files accepted in half a month got me 200 dl's.

this months stats should give me a clearer picture. It is good to know my files are getting downloaded here but i cant help feel like a cheap whore at .25 a download but this is the current situation with sub prices. Like they say, concentrate on the bigger picture which is the revenue.

On the other hand i am at 18% at istock and my downloads there get me $3-4 from my vectors at indie prices which still beats on demand and the rare single download prices i get from SS.

It is still a relief to know that i am not bound by the shackles of one company.

220
As a new contributor on SS, i am not sure when to add a reference sketch/photo when uploading vectors.
istock was very strict when it came to this but on SS, they seem a lot more lenient when it comes to adding your sketch.

It seems like they don't require proof for submitting silhouettes.

221
so brainik comes on here claiming they are the studio owners  ::) we call them out as thieves. then signs up on another account as "davidbaker"  ::) to begin trash talking. same thief?

222
did anyone download any files from this site? I wonder if its all a scam or do they really let you download all these files if you pay.

I get a clearer picture of what all the fraud downloads been all about at istock anyway. Purchase stolen credit card numbers online, steal images from agencies through the cards. make websites (about 10-20) that sell these images. a couple gets shut down doesn't make that much of a difference.

Looks like we living in the digital wild wild west w very little laws to stop these thieves.

Solution is to band up and put a bounty on these guys or was that a kickstarter project ? haha.. wanted dead or alive!

223
Nice sketches but it looks possibly like some children's book illustration concept that never went beyond the sketch phase.  ebay may be a good place.

224
thanks for sharing! thats was a great video.
