I am just hobbyist but I have a personal promotion website(s): ;)
(As a kind of little self-promotion website experiment.)

Main English website: http://www.jareso.com

My website is still under development, but partially online and working...

Currently only Photography part is partially online.
(Catalogue listing of my photos is currently running without subdivision to various categories.)

So there is only simple catalogue listing of all images, such as:
http://www.jareso.com/photo/catalogue/page/10/

And large preview page for every image in catalogue, such as:
http://www.jareso.com/photo/269/famous-orava-castle-slovakia/

Stock Graphics / Renderings catalogue is currently turned off <- being redone / redesigned to support various categories and sub-categories, etc. for hundreds and by some time / years (hopefully) thousands and thousands of stock graphics / renderings I plan to create.
Currently I have only a few stock graphics / renderings. Example from my graphic portfolio at YAYMicro:
http://yaymicro.com/search.action?search.photographer=jareso
But plan much, much more. ;)

To read more about this aim of mine please see this thread at MSG:
(I wrote something about it there, so if you are interested you can read it there, I will not repeat it here.)
Which notebook do you recommend for 3d graphics? Old damaged during rendering :(
(I finally purchased desktop instead notebook.)

Catalogue of 3D Models is also turned off <- being redone / redesigned to support promotion in better way. Such as to support preview page(s) for every 3d model with (rendered) previews from various sides, some info(s) about the model, keywords, descriptions, etc.
You can see some of my 3D Models here if you want:
http://www.turbosquid.com/Search/Artists/jareso

I am also writing, preparing and summarizing Blog / Articles / Tutorials parts for my website(s), but I am unsure when those features will finally get online.

Same for catalogue of textures.

I also have some regional / local language specific versions of my website(s) to promote my portfolios to respective audiences:

Such as:
Slovak: http://www.jareso.sk
Czech: http://www.jareso.cz
Hungarian: http://www.jareso.hu
Polish: http://www.jareso.pl
Russian: http://www.jareso.ru
Danish: http://www.jareso.dk
Romanian: http://www.jareso.ro
Bulgarian: http://www.jareso.bg
Italian: http://www.jareso.it
Swedish: http://www.jareso.se
French: http://www.jareso.fr
German: http://www.jareso.de
Dutch: http://www.jareso.be
Spanish: http://www.jareso.es
Greek: http://www.jareso.gr

These language specific websites are still under development in various degrees for various languages.
(Not-yet translated parts of various languages are temporary running in English.)

The final aim is to have those regional / local language specific versions of my website 100% translated in respective native language. <- Including keywords of images, descriptions, titles, also paths in browser's address bar (mod_rewrite), etc.

Slovak http://www.jareso.sk and Czech http://www.jareso.cz versions are currently done and running online in this way, being 100% translated to respective language, including image keywords on large preview pages, etc.
Such as:
Royalty-Free Stock Fotografia | ID: 269 | Horn časť Oravskho hradu

If you want to find more about the goals I plan to achieve with this - little self-promotion website experiment of mine - you can read this thread here at MSG, where I wrote something about it:
Uploading my stock images to my own website..good or bad ??

Btw. I am still looking for native speaker translators.
If you want to do translations for me (of course PAID) to your mother tongue please read this thread here at MSG and contact me:
[Paid] Looking for translators for my personal stock photo website.

Yes, I encourage you to try it.
You have nothing to loose (except effort, some time and maybe some money if you plan to invest).

I will try to share some of my thoughts with you here...

I do self-promotion through my own personal stock website(s) (not fully finished yet) and so far it seems to be good idea. It needs to be noted that I do it as a hobby (and also as a kind of experiment) and thus I have nothing to loose, except what I mentioned above,... It is fun & relaxation for me. Simply kind of hobby. I have pretty clear vision and plans in my mind about what I want to achieve with my personal stock website(s) and because I take it as a hobby I really have nothing to loose If my plans and goals are not achieved nothing happens, but if / when they are achieved and confirmed I am of course happy. < So far my thoughts were confirmed, so I am happy. :-)

Example of my Stock Photo Catalogue Listing: (Medium Previews)
http://www.jareso.com/photo/catalogue/page/6/

Dont forget about large preview(s) and what is most important in my opinion is not to forget about proper targeting of onsite text, such as titles, descriptions, and keywords describing the photos.

Example of my Stock Photo Previews: (Large Previews)
http://www.jareso.com/photo/57/ruined-interior-of-likava-castle-slovakia/
http://www.jareso.com/photo/131/famous-orava-castle-slovakia/

On large preview pages of my personal stock website(s) I am trying to use different (and much more descriptive) titles and descriptions whenever possible. Keywords I use on my personal site(s) are usually not just simple words (as are on stock agencies) but rather longer descriptive phrases. Sometimes completely different from texts / words my photos have at stock agencies.

When possible I try to use descriptions that are "story like" not just plain short descriptions.

Examples of "story like" description:
(English, long description.)
http://www.jareso.com/photo/268/entrance-to-the-strecno-castle/
(Czech, even longer description.)
http://www.jareso.cz/fotografie/268/vstup-do-hradu-strecno/

My regional / local language versions are human translated including titles, descriptions and keywords.

Translations are far from fully finished yet in all language versions, but are planned and some translations are in progress now.
Unfortunately, it is possible that current translations will need little rewriting / corrections, because I initially made a mistake and hired professional translators, that are otherwise good, but are not familiar with "stock photo" terms.
Luckily I realized and corrected my mistake soon.
So I started to hire native speaker stock photographers instead professional "non-stock photo" translators.

When talking about this - if you are native speaker and you are familiar with "stock photo" terms in your mother tongue (I guess that is everyone who is reading this here ;-) and you see mistake(s) in your language specific version of my site. Please contact me if you feel that you can do those translations in much better way... Really dont hesitate and just let me know! (I offer 20$ per 1000 source words I have no problem with sending you the money even in advance if I will see that you are trustworthy person.)
But on the other side I cannot promise you that you will be doing the translation right now. <- I will put you to my contact book and when (if) I will need that language I will contact you. Same if you want to do translation for me into the language that is not currently present on my website. Just drop me PM. I plan to constantly develop my site(s) in future. For example to include articles about stock, etc. (dont know when actually but have that on TO DO list) so there will be possibility for you to earn some $ by doing the translations when (if) will be the time.

But back to the topic. Some of my local / regional titles, descriptions and keywords describing my pictures are different amongst various languages and I try to rewrite them to best-fit current language specifics.
(To pick traffic I target from search engine results in the best possible way.)

Thanks to this I am starting to receive interesting (constantly growing) traffic for regional searches such as for cultural heritage pictures, local monuments, or other language specific searches. (I am far from typical stock photographer. I am hobbyist / amateur photographer actually. Shooting landscapes, nature and architecture.) Stock agencies are usually focused on English language (or use automatic translations) and thus I believe there is still a space for picking regional / local traffic / searches.

So conclusion and my advice to this point is that you should translate your website (including titles, descriptions, and keywords) at least by yourself to your mother tongue as addition to the English version. (If you are non-English speaker of course.)

Another specification of my site is that I decided (after a lot of thinking about all possibilities) not to watermark my images on "Large Preview Pages". Exactly the opposite. I decided that I would offer images on my "Large Preview Pages" for free of charge to anyone who wants to use them. With only one condition - back linking to my site. My free large preview images are low resolution 360x360 pixels maximally. But I am starting to think to make them even bigger. Not sure to what maximal free resolution yet. <- Free photos can greatly extend promotional possibilities of website.

Of course all of these would be good for nothing without some kind of monetisation.
Because I am not selling images directly from my site (and I dont plan to) I am sending traffic my site(s) receive to external agencies.

All of my stock photos can be clicked and -> linked to Dreamstime.
All of my stock graphics (3d renderings) can be clicked and -> linked to YayMicro.
All of my 3d models can be clicked and -> linked to TurboSquid.
(And I plan to add also separate section for texures.)

Btw. I dont like mixing of stock photos and stock graphics together in one portfolio (one agency). And thus I sell my photos (only photos) separately at Dreamstime and dont mix them with my stock graphics. And opposite I sell my stock graphics (only graphics) at YayMicro and dont mix them with my photos. Same for textures and 3d models - I sell those only at TurboSquid.

Of course I plan to shoot more photos and to create more stock graphics to expand my stock portfolios (and thus also website) to bigger and with more diversified subjects to choose from.
It will surely take a lot of time but hopefully it will be achieved one day

Thats what I wanted In my opinion it is worth (at least it is worth trying)...

General Stock Discussion / Re: What sites desire textures?
« on: July 30, 2011, 05:34 »
I suggest you to try TurboSquid. They are the biggest online store for 3D Models, Textures and things connected with that branch.

http://www.turbosquid.com

I sell some 3D Models and Textures there too, but just as hobbyist and thus I am faaar from the top seller.
(I make and sell my 3D Models, Textures mostly for fun in spare time. ;D)
Also sales are more rare than at microstock, but on the other side prices are much higher there especially for 3D Models.
+ You can choose any price you want!

http://www.turbosquid.com/Search/Artists/jareso

I believe you may be lucky there if you have really great quality stock texture portfolio.

General Stock Discussion / StockPhotos.cz
« on: March 19, 2011, 12:56 »
Just a little note regarding StockPhotos.cz mentioned by jm73.

StockPhotos.cz is affiliated with Dreamstime and powered by the Dreamstime API.
However, it is not a photo agency, nor a reseller in the way it is usually understood.

StockPhotos.cz project (and other language versions (.sk),(.it),(.mx)) is just catalogue or better would be said search engine of stock images.

It displays and lists only the image thumbnails (medium, large previews directly linked from Dreamstime) as any other search engine in the world does.

If the buyer wants to buy an image he/she has chosen, he/she needs to go to the source Dreamstime agency - using the link.

StockPhotos.cz project does always state the (nick)name (in exact string form - as it is available through the Dreamstime API) of the author near the large image preview. There is always also a >>>> small banner displayed that leads to the Dreamtimes user profile of the author.

The purpose of the StockPhotos.cz project is to DRIVE TRAFFIC to the Dreamstime agency and to market Dreamstime photos (THUMBNAILS) to the local language specific audience.

STOCKPHOTOS.CZ (.SK), (.IT), (.MX) PROJECT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HEMISTOCK SO PLEASE DONT MIX THEM TOGETHER IN THIS THREAD.

If you want to find out more about the StockPhotos.cz project there was already a discussion about it, here at MSG.

Yaymicro / Re: Who has had sales at YayMicro ?
« on: March 01, 2011, 02:03 »
Yes, I also stopped uploading to YAY long time ago.+ I have only small portfolio there - 89 renderings, so chances for sales are probably low.
But now I am thinking about sending more to them. Maybe sales will raise a little bit.

Yaymicro / Re: Who has had sales at YayMicro ?

After a long, long time, I got another sale today on YAY.

This rendering was sold:
Email symbol in pink color scheme.

Earnings: 2.5 EUR < nice.  :)
Hopefully more sales will come!

Selling Stock Direct / Re: The Indie Alliance
« on: February 27, 2011, 02:36 »
This is interesting topic. I have a little question:

I am curious whether any of you actually had some sales through your personal site???

109
Newbie Discussion / Re: Who has had sales at Graphic Leftovers?
« on: October 10, 2010, 01:44 »
If it is seller you can find info at bottom of the page. Click them and view their profile (Member Since, Portfolio Images, GL Collection Images, Sales) and you can also browse through their images. What else do you want to know? Are you looking for exact sales data? (You can figure that by browsing their images.)

Btw. Danoph, would it be possible to add information about from where does the new user came, before he/she registered?(HTTP_REFERER if present) Do you collect such info? Very few stock photo agencies actually collect such info (or include it in public/private referrer statistics) although it is very important feature. Also referral click-through count.

DepositPhotos / Re: Who has had sales at DepositPhotos?
« on: October 04, 2010, 12:12 »
My eight and ninth sale happened just now, one after another.

The Tatra Mountains in Summer 10/04/10 | Size: L | Subscription $0.30
Waterfall in Kvacianska Valley 10/04/10 | Size: L | Subscription $0.30

My portfolio size is 307 files online. I started uploading my files there in March this year.

Thank you for your comments. I am happy that you like it. :)

Yes I was thinking about some kind of filtering to add to it. First came to my mind search box, but that would be probably totally useless, because I have only small portfolio as I said and hardly the user could match those few keywords available on few hundreds (when will fill it completely) of my images. Also I was thinking about making click-able (searchable) keywords at large page/image previews, but that would sill be not good, because that searches (even partially restricted) through keywords would still lead to search results with just 1 - 2, or 3, or simply very few images. (Of course this depends on keywords but most would be like that.)

Better would be probably to leave keywords non-clicable (just to attract traffic / search engines) and as you suggested, to create some kind of more generic custom browseable categories / filters / themes, or so. Such as architecture, nature, animals, landscapes, etc. that would produce more thematic results grouped together.

Yes, filling data is slow and there is another problem that completely prevents it from automating this somehow - most of my older photos dont have IPTC filled with keywords, descriptions, etc.

So I dont have other choice than do it manually.  :-\

112
It is some time since I decided, that I will create some kind of online self promotion photo/graphic portfolio website for myself but I always delayed and delayed it, thinking that I will create it at some other time. But these days when I read here at MSG about self-promotion by personal website and things like that, it gave me some initial impulse to try it also myself. ;D

So finally I started to play with it little bit. It is far from finished I like to do web on the fly ;) with some vision, but with will to change things, if some new ideas came to my mind through natural development / thinking process.

I created it keeping in mind these main aims / ideas of "promotional" personal website.

1. Common / typical aim why would one want to have a personal website. I think there is no need for explanation.

2. Possible promotion of my own photo/graphic portfolio to catch some buyers for my images. I.e. Boost of own sales. But because I am just an amateur / hobbist photographer (and I must say, I like it this way and do it for fun mostly!  ;D), I know that my photos will hardly attract many buyers / visitors.

3. But in case of unsuccessful attracting of buyers for my photos, there is still a chance to indirectly catch some (new) buyers through referral. I.e. they could not be willing to buy my own images, but when being attracted by keywords and stuff on my website, they still can end as a possible stock buyers.
And same concept applies for new possible contributors.

So for now I created these "promotional" sections of my website:
Catalogue listings:

Listing of my photos:
http://www.jareso.com/photo_catalogue.php?type=stockphotos&pg=5

Listing of my Stock Graphics:
http://www.jareso.com/graphic_catalogue.php?type=stockgraphics&pg=1

Also listing of my 3D Models if you want to take a look:
http://www.jareso.com/3dmodel_catalogue.php?type=lowpoly&pg=1

Not all of my stock photos / graphics are listed there for now. I placed there just some (80) to see how it will work. When I will have more time I will probably add more. It is really slow process of adding those photos (because there is need to use my own previews generated from my original files) + filling info / data manually to my db one by one. There is no easy way how to automate this process, filenames of my photos on my backup external HDD where I store my photos, dont correspond to names on agencies, etc. ... also ID for referral link construction is needed for every image. There is no simple way how to do this in batch. Only to manually locate those images, one by one visualy by sight and filling what is needed ... and this is really, really slow.
But I am lucky that I have just few hundreds of photos online. :D
(I dont want to imagine how it would be if I had thousands and thousands of photos, like some other people here.)

So caching data is slow Maybe you ask yourself, whether it cannot be powered by some API, such as DT API for example, to simplify things ...
No, cannot (in most cases). Dreamtime API is great piece of thing that is no doubt, but legally it is just too restrictive, to be used on a personal website. Because websites powered by DT API need to be exclusively bound to promote only DT (with only just a few exceptions such as Pixmac) and thus that is something that would be just too restrictive on personal website. Logically, I on my personal website want to have a freedom to mention also other places and agencies where I sell my stuff, although DT is no doubt my favorite agency.
Also not all of my photos are accepted by DT and also I dont sell my graphics there...

So back to project, I created also bigger preview pages. Just for photos and graphics for now.
(For 3D models maybe later)

Example of larger preview page in case of stock graphic
http://www.jareso.com/graphic.php?img_id=10

Example of larger preview page in case of stock photos
http://www.jareso.com/image.php?img_id=55

I decided that in case of stock photos I will link all possible buyers to the DT. With a few exceptions in the case of photos that were refused by DT, but were accepted somewhere else. DT is by all means my favorite agency as I said + they also have a great referral program so choice is easy here.

But I dont sell my graphics at them, so in case of my stock graphics I will link to YAYMicro and maybe also to GraphicLeftovers.

So thats what I wanted. Just to share ...
Any comments, whether negative or positive are welcome of course.

New Sites - General / Re: New co-op owned RF/RM agency
« on: September 17, 2010, 12:42 »
Leaf, I think it will be possible to find much more than just 100-200 people that would want to invest in it. But there will need to be some real plan that will help them to decide.

Btw. I personally like this idea of photographers owned agency very much... :)

114
Yes, their new referral system seems to be very interesting and generous! I especially like that part when you get 5% for your referring referrals.

So theoretically it seems to be great piece of thing. Now, hopefully it will work also in reality as well as it appears to be theoretically!
I will give it a try  ;D

Yaymicro / Re: Who has had sales at YayMicro ?
« on: September 15, 2010, 08:51 »
Last week I had my first sale at YayMicro! For 1,- EUR. ;)
I was waiting for this one to come for about 9 months. But I am happy with it anyway. Simply because I take my contribution to MicroStock agencies as a hobby & great fun mainly! :)

And also sale of my image for 1,-EUR makes me happy, although if I had more sales of my images I would be much, much more happy of course! ;D

I also see this sale as a good and positive sign actually! It tells that some sales are happening there. (Although very low and rare I know I know.)
But anyway, I am still thinking positively about them hopefully more sales will follow!

This image was sold:
Isolated 3d model of ethanol [alcohol] - C2H6O molecule

Summary of my stats at YayMicro:
Online files: 89 (all 3D renderings)
Sales: 1
Online for about 9 months.

@jwsc101 and @jareso - I added a section for referred users today at the bottom of the My Account page so you can see which sellers you've referred and the date they signed up. I hope this helps!

Thank you very much for adding this feature!
It is very interesting to see & browse their portfolios! :)

It is a shame you can't see who you referred to see teh size of their portfolio for that sale.
Yes. Many times I wondered who my referred members are at GL. Hopefully GL will make referred members visible publicly (or at least visible for user who referred them). What do you think danoph? Can be this feature included on your site?

Off Topic / Amazing color photos taken 100 years ago!
« on: August 24, 2010, 06:53 »
Today surfing the net, I came to this article about one photographer, that made about 1900+ color shots of the Russian Empire about 100! years ago. He used technique of combining 3 separate BW plates, shooting these 3 expositions at short time interval with plates filtered by red, green and blue filter.

Article with some photos:
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/08/russia_in_color_a_century_ago.html

I am amazed when looking at these quality, beautiful and high dynamic color images that were photographed 100! years ago really amazing it is like using time-machine I feel like in a dream :) when I am looking at this old-time color images of forgotten places and people. They look like they were photographed just some minutes ago ...

Very interesting, so I thought I will share it with you

YayBjorn, Linda - YayMicro
Pity that you closed your forums but I hope that it is not permanent shutdown. I believe that every stock agency should have its own forum. If for nothing else than just as a kind of public addition to the private support, where can be things discussed aloud publicly. Hopefully you will enhance your anti-spam system and bring the forum back.

Please also note that after your forum shutdown all your externaly cached forum links (such as those from google, etc.) are now pointing to not very user-friendly page:
Not Found - The requested URL /read.php was not found on this server. ...
Without any (click-able) way to go to your main site or to any part of your site.
Probably some nice 404 page or redirect would do better there I think.

It is also possible to see there info about sales, levels and more so you can check anyone this way.
