Bigstock.com / Re: BigStockPhoto going into oblivion
« on: August 09, 2006, 12:01 »
I think the biggest problem with BigStock is that the interface for buyers is a pain. The syntax for searching is VERY different from most sites.

If you type in "holy spirit bible" you get 6264 images.

If you type in "+holy +spirit +bible" you get 68 images.

Many buyers don't know the difference and therefore get fed up with all of the "extra" images that they are not searching for.

Without buyers, you don't get many sales...

Adobe Stock / Re: How long does it take to get paid at Fotolia?
« on: August 09, 2006, 09:01 »
It doesn't cost them hardly anything at all to store their large cache of photos. Just a single large raid array and extra backup time.

Their cost will all depend on the hardware and software.  If they are running Oracle on Solaris, then there are very large costs.  If they are running MySQL on Linux, then there are substantially reduced costs.

GeoPappas any comments on your numerous ideas for FT at their ideas box forum were any of them ever implemented?

I don't think that they have implemented any of my suggestions (improving keyword process, adding ability to sort My Photos by views, adding ability to edit keywords, etc).

Even though they have an Idea Box, they don't seem to take many of the suggestions.

I don't see myself using the tokens I've earned.

This is exactly what they are probably hoping for.  If you don't use them, then they don't need to pay for them.

A question from someone who doesn't have a camera that shoots RAW. I see so many different file extensions, one for each camera brand. Does the buyer need one filter for each type or does a RAw filter read all types?

There is no standard for RAW files, hence the large number of them.  (NOTE: My understanding is that DNG is an attempt to standardize RAW).  In order for a program (such as PS or PSP) to be able to read a RAW file, they need to write program code for each one.  As new RAW files come out, they are added over time.  The main problem is that the manufacturer usually has to provide the hook (e.g., a DLL) to the RAW file, and this can take some time to come out.  Some RAW versions take longer to support than others.

Hope that helps.

but we still get our % of the sale

Are you sure about that? If they are not generating any income, how can they pay you a royalty?

why would it be giving them away for free?... or I don't quite understand your problem?

Since photographers get "tokens" for uploading photos, they can then use these "tokens" to download others photos for free.

is it unethical to download eachother's pictures?

I'm not sure if it is "unethical", but I don't think that I would want my photos being given away for free to others (photographers or not).

Software - General / Re: Windows Vista
« on: August 03, 2006, 19:20 »
GeoPappas that is why leaf is asking you about it.

I guess that I should have also prefaced my statement with the fact that I have been in the computer business for over 20 years. And if I wouldn't touch it, then I wouldn't recommend anyone else do it either.

But there will always be those "cowboys" that will be on the "bleeding edge"...

I would never use any software that is a .0 (dot zero) version.  Basically, you become the guinea pig that finds all of the problems.

I would at least wait until SP1 (service pack 1) and probably SP2.

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT Eliminates Instant Buy Option

I even saw a buyer saying he would like it.

There were actually quite a few buyers that said that they liked the Instant Buy option.

Only DT knows why they did this...

Is this site audited by any other organization?  In other words, how do you know that your money is actually getting to the charities that it is advertising?

Dreamstime.com / DT Eliminates Instant Buy Option
« on: August 01, 2006, 19:18 »
It seems that Dreamstime has removed the ability for a buyer to purchase an image without registering.

That is too bad because I have had quite a few Instant Purchases.  It is quite nice to see a few dollars added for one image (and it is more in line with what the royalty should be in the first place).

A discussion was started about this, but it was closed by admin.  It is very sad that more and more microsites are censoring their forums.

Computer Hardware / Re: BACKUP YOUR PHOTOS
« on: August 01, 2006, 10:38 »
I agree two backups maybe one extrernal and another optical (to protect against EMP)...

If you are hit by an EMP blast, then you will have more to worry about then your photos!

If you are worried about a power surge, then get another external drive and store it offline somewhere.  This will also protect against someone stealing your computer, and if you store it in a media fire safe, then it will protect against fire as well.

Lighting / Re: Hallogen Floodlights for lighting
« on: July 29, 2006, 08:13 »
Any ideas how far the silk cloth should be from the glass of the floodlights so as not to be burned when exposd for a long period of time??

You can get pretty close. I tried a few different materials within a foot or so of the lights and they were alright.

Legalese: If you burn your house down it ain't my fault.  ;)

No fireworks, nothing special.

Oh well...
