You can have private videos in YouTube.  Viewers have to set up an account there, so you can enable these videos to their ID.

Thanks, but I was already aware of YouTube (as well as Google Video).  The problem with YouTube (and Google Video) is that people need to sign up to see your private videos.  I'm trying to avoid that, since many people don't want to sign up for a variety of reasons.

Thanks.  I am going to think about SmugMug.  My issue is the price.  With many things free (or close to free), I have a hard time spending $60/year for hosting.  But then again, I'm cheap :)

As the subject states, I am looking for a photo and video hosting site for family photos/videos that:

1. Does not require guests to sign up

and

2. Allows the owner to password protect an image/video

I currently have a pBase account, which I like a lot.  I can post images of the family which can be password protected.  I can then send a link to friends & family along with the password to view the images.  I like this because it doesn't require friends & family to sign up to (another) website.  Some people don't want to sign up to websites.

The problem with the pBase account is that it doesn't host video.

Any ideas?

Adobe Stock / Fotolia Offering Video?

It looks like Fotolia is getting ready to offer video.

There is a link at the top of the website that goes to this page:

Duplicate post.  Sorry.

Tried to use Amazon S3 but it's too slow so I never finished uploading before I gave up.

Saving large amounts of data to an online backup service would definitely require a very high speed Internet connection.  I have over 50 GB of images and a low-speed DSL connection (128 kbps upstream).  I calculated that it would take about 50 days to backup that amount of data over my current connection.  If I got high speed DSL (512 kbps upstream), I could cut that time down to only about 12 days!  :D

Ultimately cloud of computers should be safes what to backup but I wish I could send them a hard drive so they would upload data locally.

SOSOnline.com allows a user to send in a DVD or a hard disk (provided by them) to seed your online data.

I don't use them and have only tried out their free trial for a few days, but I didn't really like their feature set.

See here for more info:

You should ... save your data on professionally maintained RAID arrays, in addition to any local backups.

While many people like RAID, it has its problems as well (and in my opinion is much over-rated for home usage).  For example, if your RAID controller goes bad and you can't find a replacement then you have probably just lost all of your data.  You would be surprised how often this happens.  Trying to find a replacement RAID controller for hardware that is only a few years old can be very difficult.

Hard disk are not meant to be backup media.

I'm not sure where you heard this, but it isn't correct.  HDDs are used for backups quite frequently.  There is a strategy called disk-to-disk (D2D) that is widely used in the IT industry for backing up crucial data very quickly.

See here for more info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk-to-disk

HDDs are a very reliable and efficient means of backing up data.

Unfortunately, there have been many reports in the industry of CDs/DVDs having a lifespan of only a few years.  It is one of the reasons that I moved away from CDs/DVDs onto HDDs a few years ago.

Here is just one of those reports:

General Stock Discussion / Re: How do you back up your images?
« on: December 30, 2008, 09:47 »
Wich software do you use for automatic backups?

I have used SyncBackSE for many years and love it.  Besides the ability to create backups via various schedules, it will also keep previous versions of files (that you specify).  This is a great feature, just in case you made a change and backed it up, but then you realize you needed the previous version.

Does it mean that we don't' have to report the income if it is less than $600? I also wanted to ask, if we report an income, can we also claim expenses, such as photo equipment?

According to the IRS, you are supposed to claim ALL income.  But in general, people don't claim income that is not reported to the IRS.

If you report income, then you can also claim LEGITIMATE expenses.  So anything that you used to generate your income is a possibility, but some things are more difficult to claim than others.  For example, if you use your computer for stock photography, but you also use it for other things (personal, your day job, etc), then you can only claim it partially at best.  And you are supposed to keep records to show how you came up with those numbers.  Another sticky area is claiming your home as a place of business.

LEGAL DISCLAIMER: I am not an accountant.  It is up to you to verify all of this.

Missing my point  Geo,

But thank you for your input.

Best,
AVAVA

Sorry about that.  I can be clueless sometimes.  Since you posed a question, I thought I was being helpful by trying to answer it.

Have a great day.

NOTE: PLEASE ONLY VOTE IN THIS POLL IF YOU ARE AN INDEPENDENT.

As the question asks, which stock agency do you feel is best (from a submitters point of view)?

I am wondering what submitters (photographers, illustrators, CGI artists, etc) feel is the best agency.

You can vote anonymously and don't need to leave a response if you don't want, but if you want you can leave the reason for your vote as well.

FYI: I only included the top 7 sites, since they are the largest, and ordered the sites in the poll according to the "Microstock Poll Results" (on the right side of this page).

How well do you think it will sell.  :-\

I think that you could get a good idea of how it would sell if you just looked at how the images sell on the stock sites.  For example, you could compare sales for fluffy bunnies to strip mining, piles of batteries, etc.

I would bet that you will find that "realistic" images don't sell nearly as well as "pink sky" images.

I was expecting a bad month for December.  So far it has been alright, but I expect that today is really the last day of the month for sales.

What is everyone's guess for when things will pick up again?

It seems that MS has issued an emergency patch for this vulnerability:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/961051.mspx

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-078.mspx

Basically, if you run Windows Update, you should receive "Security Update for Internet Explorer (960714)", which patches this issue.

IE is not less secure than FF

While I agree with most of the statements that you made, I have to disagree with this one.

IE is less secure by the fact that it is the most prevalent browser.  More people use it and this makes more people interested in hacking it.

Hackers are not that interested in less known browsers, since they will not give them the "bang for the buck" that they are looking for.

I used Firefox for quite a while, but the latest release still seems a little buggy (it crashes every now and then) and is much slower.

I switched to Google Chrome and have been enjoying it very much.

If possible, I would like to read the thread from where I read it last.  In other words, it should go to the post where I last read it and continue from there.

For example, if I never read the thread, then it should go to the first post.

But if I read the thread yesterday at 3:00 pm, then it should go the the next post after that time.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience.

If I ship via USPS, then I always use delivery confirmation (which costs less than $1).

That must be how Dell keeps their computer prices so low :)

Any chance that it might be updated (by removing LuckyOliver, which is long since gone, and adding some other sites that are still around)?
