I don't think they use software. Shutterstock generally doesn't like images with motion blur. They'll take them, but it's harder to get them accepted.

I don't think it's a good idea. Shutterstock is moving along fine. This would be too much of a drastic change and could destroy something that works really well for a lot of people. It would put too much favoritism on some contributors over others.

I like the new licenses, but you can still get ANY photo at the base price, depending on your usage. It's easier for the buyers and it's easier for the contributors. Keep keeping it simple.

Besides, if you're a contributor and this is what you want, you have choices already. You can work with iStock or go with the RM agencies. Let's not make all the sites the same. That would mean fewer choices in the end.

I ran the all time numbers. 35 percent U.S., 65 percent non-U.S.

Over the past two payments:
U.S. Source, 42 percent
Non U.S. Source, 58 percent

I'm in the U.S.

Same problem with newest batch. I was kinda happy they got approved on a weekday for some sales, then go look and see that no one will buy them like that. Frustrating.

Picked up a bit this week. Two today for five this month. SODs are coming, too. Slow start this month, but things are looking better.

Thanks.

It's only a small portion of my port that gets regular downloads. I have lots of failures, too!

My number of downloads a month is generally equal to the number of images in my port. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but usually very close. It's been that way since I started on Shutterstock and continues even this month, which is slower than last month. For example, this month I've had 904 sales so far with a port of 1,121 images in my port. So, I'm pretty close to on track, and I will probably pass 1,100 sales by the end of the month.

Bigstock.com / Re: New FTP Server - Working like a charm!
« on: August 23, 2012, 10:35 »
Now the regular uploader isn't working.

I had been using FTP, then switched to the regular uploader because of issues. Tried it this morning, uploaded the files, then nothing showed up. Tried it three times. Finally went back to FTP (before checking this thread) and it worked. So I guess it's back to FTP.

Five last month, one this month, but at least I got a $49 and $16.80 SOD to balance a little.

Thanks for the info. I had only recently started getting regular payouts there, and up until now, they had been quick. I was worried there might have been a glitch somewhere.

Adobe Stock / Payout slowdown
« on: August 21, 2012, 12:08 »
In the past, my Fotolia payouts come within a day (sometimes same day) of making the request. Now it's been two weeks since I made my last payout request and still no deposit. Has anyone else noticed a change in how long it takes to get a payout after requesting it?

I was thinking it may result in "a throw it against the wall and delete whatever doesn't stick" attitude in contributors, which may achieve what DT is trying to do by stopping similars going onto the site or what IS is doing by limiting uploads.

At least this way the contributor can decide how they want to streamline their portfolio to maximize returns, rather than having a reviewer do it (DT) or completely guessing before the image has had a chance to sell (IS).

In any case, I am not sure I would approve of the change, but thought it was an interesting idea to discuss.

I can buy that. It's really not in a contributor's best interest to submit too many similars. If you split sells among two similar images, it's harder to climb on the popular search. That's why I try to not have similars, even on Shutterstock where some searches result in thumbnails that look like frames from a video. I think Dreamstime goes too far. A vertical and horizontal composition should be different enough; Shutterstock allows too many similars, which hurts all contributors by burying images on newest then hurting the similar contributor by splitting sales.

Not sure why it would matter. If your images are good and performing well, low performing images that don't sell well don't really compete with you because they're buried further back in the search.

« on: August 05, 2012, 15:09 »
They do technically stay separate batches, but all you batches are reviewed together at one time by one reviewer, so in essence it is like they are one batch. It's like you get in line with an image on Monday, and while you're standing in line someone constantly brings you some more images to submit.  By the time Friday rolls around and you finally reach the review desk, you get to have all of those images reviewed even though some were taken later than the initial entry.

I think the thing missing here is that it's not hard to get 100 photos in a batch at Shutterstock that aren't similar because of the way the site does the review. While it might not be the case this time, if you just keep adding to your submission queue during the week, all the images get grouped together for review. So you can do 10 on Monday, 30 on Tuesday, 20 on Wednesday, etc., and build up 100 very different images into what actually ends up being one batch. It wasn't an issue when the reviews happened overnight, but now that they're taking anywhere from four to seven days. I've hit around the 100 marks plenty of times in recent months.

Even with the possibility of having a whole batch rejected, I still prefer they all get grouped together because at least some images get a quick review time. I basically always queue up an image after review to start up the next week's batch.

Only problem with Shutterstock is that they keep monkeying with the site. New bugs all the time and search results that make no sense. Everything was fine until they added the relevant button, and then just kept tinkering for no reason. The only good changes have been the new licenses. I think it's time for Shutterstock Classic with just the new licenses.

Shutterstock.com / Re: How are sales going?
« on: August 01, 2012, 10:49 »
Just photos. I got 5 ELs this past month, which is more than the usual 2-3. But total downloads overall was still up so I'm happy with the sales growth matching my efforts to get more uploaded. The quality of my images has also mostly improved.

I don't have a tax deduction because I'm set up as an LLC.

Edit:
I do have three video clips there that I just started doing, but they're horrible and have had no sales.

I agree. It's still possible to grow your portfolio and see your earnings increase. My SS earnings since the start of the year:
