Cameras / Lenses / Canon Canada 5D retail staff discount
« on: February 26, 2008, 01:01 »

Monday, February 25, 2008, 09:11 AM - Canon 5D Mark II
There's currently a big retail staff discount on the 5D. So if you work in the retail world you could get one cheaper than at B&H.

I'm not sure if the discount is available in any other country.

(note: this from canonrumor.com)

New Sites - General / Beware of Red Bubble
« on: February 10, 2008, 17:36 »
As an Australian, I hate to have to admit that an Australian site is not playing fair.

Last night I had a huge fight with the organisation on a number of issues - including manipulation of a forum posting - and have cancelled my account.

I was wondering how these sold on the microstock sites. Like buttons for websites etc.

Just thought I would pass on good wishes to everyone during the holiday season.

Hopefully one day, when we are all rich from microstock, we may all meet.

Have fun with family and friends, and please stay safe.

Cameras / Lenses / What a rip off Canon!
« on: October 29, 2007, 15:10 »
I am sure other manufacturers do this, but this is particularly about Canon.

The recommended price for the Canon 40D in the USA is $1299, and in Australia it is $1999.

The Australian dollar has hovered at 90 US cents for months, and it is now 92 cents. Based on that, the price in Australia should be around $1400 Australian dollars for the 40D.

This is an unethical practice called skimming. They do it all the time in Australia, and wonder why people buy stuff overseas and import.

New Sites - General / Has anyone tried Photoshelter
« on: September 25, 2007, 17:06 »
I noticed they are spending up big on arranging meetings in the US between photographers and designers.

It is a pay site, do you think it has potential?

Cameras / Lenses / Price check!
« on: September 19, 2007, 17:10 »
I have joined a few drop shipping companies. While I am not at all interested in becoming a retailer, I can get you a check price for most cameras and lenses. If you have an enquiry, let me know. I also have access to a Singapore wholesaler who has a minimum order of $5000. So if a few of you wanted, we could get a good deal on some stuff.

Photoshop Discussion / Has anyone used Photomatix?
« on: September 06, 2007, 19:31 »
Hello. I wanted to try some HDR and only have Photoshop 7.

Is Photomatix an add in, or does it stand alone?

Can someone give me some feedback please?

Cameras / Lenses / Advice wanted on lens purchase and 30D set up
« on: September 04, 2007, 17:55 »
Firstly. I am interested in getting a quality wide angle lens for landscapes. The camera is a 30D Canon and I am keen to hear feedback from those who have used a variety of lenses.

Secondly, I am not happy with the pictures my 30D takes. They are simply not as good as my old 300D. they do not seem sharp, and there is a lot of purple fringing.

Can someone give me some advice.

I only shoot RAW.

I paid $225. Is it worth anything?

Cameras / Lenses / Just ordered my Canon 30D
« on: July 25, 2007, 17:45 »
Final price was AUD$1158 which is US$1026. Australia supplier however.

The exchange rates for Australia are the highest they have been for 18 years.

Now I have to buy myself some nice glass. Think I will get a real fast 17-85 lens, and one of the new DC Sigma wide angles for landscapes.

There are heaps of major suppliers around the world with whom I believe we could jag some awesome deals from.

Currently Leaf has 700 odd members, but I am sure we could easily find 2000 stockies to join us.

My idea is we approach a number of major suppliers and get them to submit a price list for a period of 6 months at a time in $USD.

We then choose the supplier for the next 6 months from whom we will agree to purchase from, and to send leads to.

What we are in effect doing is becoming the retailer ourselves.

My friend at a camera store tells me the margins in Australia are 35% on RRP. Plus they get up to 15% in rebates which are disguised as "advertising" etc.

Importing of course means you may incur Customs Duty in your country, however, this also means the supplier is able to discount the goods and services tax in their originating country because the product is export.

I would like to hear back from you on this.

CIPA has updated its PictBridge Certified Model listing dated July 17, 2007.

And there is a new listing for a camera called EOS 40D!

Cameras / Lenses / I think I will buy a 30D
« on: July 05, 2007, 20:32 »
It is tax time, and I have a big refund due. And my poor old 300D is so full of dust it takes longer to patch all the spots in Photoshop than it is worth.

There are a few deals on the Canon 30D at the moment. I do not have any decent lenses, but can anyone give me a reason why I should look at another brand instead of the Canon 30D? With an IS lens (28-135) the deal comes in at around $2300.

I noticed on the Kodak site they sell digital camera sensors. Is it possible to fit an after market Kodak to your camera?

Like can I stick a Kodak 7mp sensor in my old Canon 300D?

Shutterstock.com / My first 0 sales day
« on: June 10, 2007, 20:58 »
I hope this is not a sign of things to come. Just experienced the first day I have not sold an image at SS.

My sales have been plummeting on all the sites. DT has now started to slide for me as well.

Hey everyone. I want to enter my first photo competition and wanted to get some advice from you guys.

I will get the photos professionally mounted, but if you have any tips on anything I should do in Photoshop etc I would really appreciate it.

I am going to take the photos to a professional lab for printing

Hello folks. There are a stack of masking tutorials out there but I seem to get lost about half way.

Anyone know of an easy to follow one.

I have some old family photos I want to fix up. Things like shadows behind people and such.

Dreamstime.com / Reversed sales this month
« on: April 22, 2007, 17:59 »
Since I have been guilty of knocking DT when they have annoyed me, I thought it only proper I say something good when they do well.

This month I have had the reverse of my sales. DT have actually out sold my SS portfolio by double the income.

Cameras / Lenses / Anyone know anything about these Kodaks?
« on: April 21, 2007, 04:34 »
There appears to be a lot anecdotal stuff, but not much to go on. Regardless, seems like a lot of camera for $2000.

Photo Critique / pick the mistake in this

It isn't mine of course, but it is listed as a top seller. i found it sort of quirky funny in an odd way ... if that is at all possible.
