iStockPhoto.com / Re: IS kills logo and png initiatives
« on: April 23, 2012, 15:15 »
Pulling phone support is really bad.  Says volumes about the value placed on contributors there.  :(

Anyone read the section about Zazzle and Cafe Press?  Are they only images on Getty itself that are available to these print-on-demand customers, or is Istock content available too?

Seeing how integrated Getty and Istock have become, I don't always know what they mean when they say "Getty content".

it sounds to me like it is just Getty Images stuff available in Zazzle and Cafepress.  But if it is IS, I'd sure like to know when that happened.   I think many contributors would prefer to have their stuff sold in their personal Zazzle or Cafepress store rather than filtered through iStock just so they (IS) can get a cut of the profit.  I know I have some stuff on CafePress and I'm not too keen on iStock selling my stuff through those channels.

Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / Re: BorrowLenses.com
« on: April 18, 2012, 18:14 »
I have rented from BorrowLenses before -- several times, in fact, and have never had a problem with them.  I also don't mind the push-pull - I was actually eyeing that 100-400 used lens there that they have for sale!

I am pretty sure I rented that one before but now I have am thinking that it may have been the 28-300mm (also a push-pull) instead.  I'll have to go back to my hard drive and pull up the photos from the trip I took to Bryce Canyon to be sure.

I'll be interested to hear your feedback after you've spent 10 days with that baby!  :)

Well in that case I'd put something like "Cape Town Shoot, Feb 3-5"

I am no expert, but my descriptions are usually brief and I have never had a rejection because of the shoot description being inadequate.

makes you wonder if iStock will finally be launching their Logo program now that one of their biggest competitors is in the logo business.

Jo Ann.. just checked yours and lots of missing thumbnails!  Mine too!

If I was that incompetent at my job I would be standing on the street corner next to the guy holding the sign "I fix computer for food"  --- wait.. maybe I should send that guy to Calgary to work for iStock/Thinkstock -- they must have food up there that they can pay him with.

Canon / Re: Canon 5D Mark III: Official announcement
« on: March 05, 2012, 12:00 »
I've been telling myself for the past 2 years that I'd hold off buying a MkII and wait for the MkIII - in the meantime buy lenses and lights if the itch to spend money on gear needs scratching.

Now the MkIII is out, am wondering if it's worth the upgrade - maybe keep the MkI and keep going with lens and light improvements?

haha.. me too!  I think I'll give it a few months at least - the price is just a bit too much if you ask me.  The one intriguing thing for me is the low light high ISO.  I think I"ll rent one after they become available to see if it is something I can or can't live without for $3,500.

Canon / Re: Canon 5D Mark III: Official announcement
« on: March 05, 2012, 11:50 »
If I didn't buy a 5D2 last summer this alone "This correction is based on Canon-created lens profiles, up to 29 of which can be downloaded and saved onto the camera. These profiles allow correction not only of lateral CA but also of the harder-to-fix axial CA" would almost make it worth the upgrade. I only use a couple of fast primes and CA is killing me, especially when I have to remove 3 differently coloured aberrations from the high contrast edges

you might be better off investing in better glass (better lenses) than a new camera body.  Good glass can do wonders in eliminating CA.

General Photography Discussion / Re: Sensor needs to be cleaned?
« on: February 21, 2012, 16:10 »
I had my sensor professionally cleaned at a photo shop here in town and then decided to try it myself.  I did a lot of reading online about it, and found that these guys have some really good info on it:
http://www.copperhillimages.com/index.php

I think I got their "mega kit" -- at first I was terrified, but now that I've done it myself a few times it's super easy and I've not messed up my sensor one bit.  my advice is to read all about it first then try it on a lens or filter first to get the hang of it.

if you're still nervous, there's always professionals willing to take your money and do the job for you.  :)

oh wow.. that's awesome!  thanks for fixing it!

iStockPhoto.com / Re: interview with Kelly Thomson
« on: February 15, 2012, 14:07 »
Hi guys,
I'm Alex, the guy who interviewed Kelly. I think I own you an explanation. I am not a huge fan of iStock neither, it took me ages to talk to someone in there and was not supposed to be with Kelly, anyway, it is how it is. Obviously the interview was made on December, I published it today because I thought it would be kind of disrespectful if I didn't publish it at all, he took the time to answer the questions, so I owned him this. Is it late? Hell yeah, but I had better things to publish before that. Moreover there are some questions that have not been answered. I apologize from you guys, I know I could have done it better.
Regards,
Alex

I don't think you need to apologize for anything, Alex. For your part, it's a nice write-up and I appreciate that you published it.  Although you probably should correct the part of Kelly being SVP and perhaps indicate that "at the time of this Interview Kelly WAS the SVP of Getty..."  a lot has happened since you got this interview and it would be helfpul if you added a little author's note to put it in context.

I think most of the issue is with Kelly's responses.  You're reporting it as it was presented to you.

The polls won't take my info. (I input my data and submit and the page goes right back to where I started.) So I wasn't able to participate. I'm wondering if this is happening to a lot of other people. Perhaps this is why the low earners don't have any data this month.

me too - the poll won't take my info.  I'm unable to vote and I had a great month at SS and DT as well, increased by at least one category.  I also increased at FT, but not sure that going from category 1 to is worth much :).  So my January results are not reflected in the poll.

Little green/red arrows are missing for the low earning sites!? Bug?

probably not enough votes on those yet.  I think it needs a certain number.

In the meantime, the polls are not working for me.  now it won't let me vote.  Tried with different browsers and different computers but each time I select my options, it just returns to the same voting screen.  Altho it does say I can't vote again until March (which it has said for a few weeks now) but this time I get the voting buttons, it just doesn't accept my votes.  :(

Update:  Leaf, not sure if you did anything or not but I just checked this from my home computer and the poll is okay except that it still tells me I can't vote again until March (maybe it will be okay tomorrow on Feb 1 - I'll check again in the morning).

if you didn't do anything maybe it was some strange cache/IP issue at my office computer.  I'll also check that tomorrow just in case.

It could be that you have the same IP as someone else... or something... seems like a bug nonetheless - I'll check it out more tomorrow hopefully

thanks Leaf. Let me know if you need any specifics from me in order to troubleshoot it.

« on: January 31, 2012, 14:30 »
okay, maybe I'm missing something, I went to the polls page, and the last time I voted was sometime early January for my December numbers.  So I went there to see what I had voted last month since tomorrow is Feb 1 and I wanted to see what I had put last month.

I see the page shows that I (supposedly) voted in a bunch of categories where I do not even have a portfolio (i.e. BigStock, CreStock, 123Rf, etc).   I know I didn't vote in these, I only have accounts at a small handful of agencies.   Plus.. the page says I can't vote again until March.  Strange. Is anyone else seeing weird results like this? here's a screenshot of what I see:

« on: January 30, 2012, 17:16 »
FT and DT do have exclusive artist programs, but I don't think any top earners are exclusive at either one. DT, FT and CanStock have a notion of exclusive images, which don't really skew the numbers enough to distort things I would think.

What would be helpful, I think, is to have something for IS exclusives and to have a total for indies (in addition to the individual agency info) and then see how the totals compare (in whatever groups the survey brackets income). IMO it only makes sense to compare exclusives' IS income against the total from all other agencies for indies.

great idea!

« on: January 30, 2012, 15:29 »
I don't know how many exclusives complete the poll - I've never completed it. First because I was exclusive and I didn't see any point. Afterwards because the income brackets are not very useful - your number one and two agencies can be hundreds of dollars a month apart and still appear in the same bracket as if they were equal.

And for an exclusive with a decent portfolio and earnings, they're just going to click on 10 ($1,000) each month and it won't tell you anything about whether iStock is up or down anyway.

I like the idea of a poll, but as is, there's more of a bias towards the low end ($50 a month or less) and honestly if a site is under $50 a month, which a lot of the low earners are, what difference does it make whether it's $5 or $10 - it's all flavors of virtually zero?

Makes sense, maybe Leaf will reconsider and add a vote for IS exclusives only, because their vote doesn't change anything else for all of the rest of the agencies? It would be a good way to look at the whole picture for IS Indys vs Exclusive.

Maybe a real number for what IND make on IS without the top earners averaged in?

but then what do you do with all the other agencies that have exclusives?  I'm just assuming that IS has the most, but I think I may be biased on that since I was one there for so long.  I dont know what impact that has for other agencies, it could skew the poll the other way if you only had an exclusive-only poll for IS

Like everyone else my IS earnings are a fraction of what they used to be. What I can't understand is - why are they still #2 in the Microstock Poll Results? So far for Jan; I've earned more at Canstock than I have at IS! In fact, the only site that did worse than IS was BS. It's hard to believe they were once my #1 earner.  Someone has to be doing well at IS for them to rank at #2.

i think they remain near the top in the poll here because there are still a lot of IS exclusives here and that is their sole income so it remains higher for them than the rest of us.  just a guess.. I think the next few months will be telling in seeing how IS continues to rank in the MSG monthly poll.
