One sale this month for 25 cents.  ::)

Are the people who wait so long 'nudging' Support? I contact them after six months and put a note in my diary for four weeks later, and I've only had to use the four-weeks-later reminder once. But I guess some buyers will be 'stickier' to catch up.
It also seems that certain distributors need nudging sometimes.

I nudged them, and posted their reply. They gave a standard cut-and-paste response, pretty much out of the Agency playbook. My account will be closed within 2 months, but I will probably have this uncleared balance to deal with for the next year or so.

There is a fundamental difference between a prepaid (microstock) site and a post-paid agency. The clients of a post-paid agency will always delay payment for as long as they possibly can. Boosting cash-flow by delaying settlements must be in Economics 101. It ain't pretty but it's the way the world works.

There are people in this forum going on 1 to 2 years without payments clearing. Pushing cash flow numbers out beyond the fiscal year is nothing but financial chicanery. I wouldn't trust an investment in a company which did so. I just don't see where Alamy's pricing justifies this type of post-pay delay. Most of my sales are in the $20 to $50 range. It's really not worth waiting 6 to 24 months for.

Here is their response to my complaint about uncleared payments from early July -

Hello Daniel

The time it takes for a sale to clear depends on the type of customer and if theyve got a particular deal with us. We report sales in as they happen to contributors, unlike many other stock agencies who would only inform you when theyve received funds.  This transparent system has great benefits for contributors, the down side is contributors are able to see uncleared sales.

If you havent seen the payment clear we havent given up or forgotten about it, our Credit control team are still chasing and well update your account once weve collected payment

If there's anything else we can do for you, just give us a shout.

Thanks,

Rehana

Sorry but that isn't good enough. I expected a weak response, and that is exactly what I received.

4 1/2 months is a ridiculously long period for a payment to clear, and I don't buy it. The idea that other agencies wait several months for checks to clear, or credit cards to process, etc., or for buyers to decide that they really want the image they ordered, is a little unbelievable. These days I expect nothing less from a stock agency than smoke, mirrors, and a whole lot of deflection.

I really don't think there is "anything else they can do for me", so I guess it is time to clear out my portfolio, wait a few years for the payments to clear, and then close the account permanently.

I have a significant purchase from July 9 which still hasn't cleared. So I sent Alamy the following email -

I have approximately $150 in uncleared purchases, most of which I believe is in relation to a download on July 9, 2013 under Alamy Ref .........

It has been 4 and 1/2 months since this purchase was made. I would like to have resolution on this sale as soon as possible. If the buyer is not serious about the purchase, then it is time to cancel it and move on. Otherwise complete the purchase immediately.

If it is going to take several months for purchases to clear in the future, I will have no choice but to remove my images.

Regards

Daniel Padavona

I'm tired of dealing with Alamy and their horrible keywording interface, the IPTC import issues, and the purchases which take forever to clear. I'd prefer to show love for agencies which pay 35-40% commissions or more, but given the multiple issues, the new fees, and the very small contribution of Alamy to my overall sales, I see no reason to stick around if they don't give me immediate resolution.

You see? It really is unsustainable!

I agree with Gostwyck. Because the keywords are pigeon-holed through the CV system, the results of the study are useless. You are better off using Google's keyword tool to delineate estimated search numbers, and just use common sense when considering how a searcher is likely to refine search words after the results of the initial search are returned.

That's funny (well not really, it isn't) because Alamy responded to a post I made on MSG by saying that the maximum clearing time was 4 months. You are going on 17 months without clearance. Ridiculous.

So if we close the accounts or delete the "sold" images immediately, do the sales get cancelled? Because at this point we should do it just to spite the buyer and Alamy, as 17 months is way too long to decide if you want to spend $100-200 or not. Sorry but you had your chance. Waste somebody else's time.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Accepted into ImageBrief
« on: November 12, 2013, 15:06 »
I've also been accepted into ImageBrief. Fortunately I had some work that they were looking for that hadn't been put into RF yet. I have no idea what to expect. They are a well known commodity, but I have no idea about their sales numbers. It's a refreshing change from microstock, and I love their portfolio, so I plan to shoot accordingly for their needs in the coming months and decide if it is worth pursuing on an ongoing basis.

My theory is that agencies have been selling images so cheaply, for so long, that it's gotten to the point where a growing number of customers simply don't need that many images anymore. I'm not suggesting that they have stopped buying, but perhaps they buy less than they used to?

I can't back this up with data. But for years many have argued that there was no difference between selling 5 images for $7 each and 100 images for $0.35 each. It still pays the same, right? The difference is the former option theoretically keeps demand higher (because I only own 5 images and I need 95 more), whereas the latter option reduces demand more quickly (I already have 100 images, I don't need any more).

I don't think the agencies have all the answers, regardless of their data. It could be that they realize they are killing demand long term by grabbing market share now, and are looking to make their money and run before the market collapses.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Self-Hosted at 14.6 - top 5

There are people here that have an interest in inflating the ratings.

It's me. I make money gambling on the poll numbers.  ;)

I just looked at the Vegas line for this week's match up:

Self-Hosted (-8) vs. 123RF

I'm giving the points. Stone Cold Lock of the Week imo.   :P

I don't believe that there are many customers looking to make purchases from specific contributors. So even if you go exclusive to protect your own pricing, that doesn't stop customers from browsing for similar images at a cheaper outlet.

Carry on then, nothing to see here.   8)

Sean, have you experimented much with pricing? I think those images are worth a lot more than $5 for web res.

« on: October 14, 2013, 15:53 »
If there is anybody who should be selling Direct, it's you Sean. From what I have heard from others about EVO, there is little chance you will do better through them than through Direct channels.

Not an advertisement for Symbiostock, KTools or Photoshelter. Choose a platform that you like, set the pricing and licensing to your specification, and decide which collection of images you wish to market. There are only a handful of contributors on this site whose ports are large enough (and premium quality) to have a significant customer base looking for them specifically. You should take advantage of it.

Very impressive app. I'm not sure I can justify it at my level of earnings, but it is a terrific tool. Well done!

Almost every new band I've found in the last 15 years I have found through the internet, with a few more being found through XM/Sirius. The spread of ideas and art is undeniably a wonderful thing. But theft is theft.

44
Take a look at the comments after the article. Incredibly sad. There are so many posters claiming that Byrne is just whining, and that artists are fat cats. One of the first posters actually suggests that it is better for society if art is done for hobby and without compensation.

I confronted my son last week because he was listening to a rap album. I had no problem with the content, even if it wasn't "my thing". My question was, where did you get the album, because we sure didn't buy it for you? He got it from a friend, who downloaded it from some site where it was posted illegally. Sigh.

It's a Free For All. Take anything what you want.

45
The major record labels usually siphon off most of this income, and then they dribble about 15-20% of what's left down to their artists.

That sounds familiar.

Before they broke up earlier this year, Grammy Award winners The Civil Wars eschewed record companies completely and did it on their own. Every CD or MP3 they sold, that was their money and they kept it. I remember them saying how incredible it was to go on tour and actually have it be profitable (most bands lose money on tour, but do it to spur additional CD sales).

Symbiostock - General / Re: No preview image with uploaded jpg
« on: October 11, 2013, 17:11 »
Here is the solution from Ron that ended up working for me:

As for the image previews. It could be related to the watermark. The watermark location seem to have changed with 2.6.5 (not 100% sure about that tho) but when the watermark cant be found, the images wont show a preview. I got this from Leo the other day, it might work.

Upload watermark through here :
http://yoursite.com/wp-admin/media-new.php

You simply place the location referenced in that media page to here, into the settings area where you assign your watermark.

http://yoursite.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=symbiostock-control-options&tab=2settings

Then upload and process an image and see what happens.

Image Previews are now working as intended. In my case, the watermark png file pointed to in my Settings was not being read properly, for whatever reason. Uploading a new watermark file and putting the new location in the Settings allowed the Previews to generate again.

Very frustrating last 40 or so days. Glad that there turned out to be a solution.

47
Yes that latter issue is important for both site speed, and page "focus" within search engines. Not to mention end user functionality.

48
Eureka, you were correct Ron. The settings panel appeared to be pointing toward the correct location of the original watermark, but once I uploaded a second watermark and changed the setting to point at it, images processed with full previews. Excellent work, and +1 many times for finally solving this for me. It's been over a month of banging my head against a desk.

I'll need to create a proper watermark but at least I know it is functional. I can't remember the names of the other MSG members who had the same problem (Neilr was one but there were a few others), but hopefully it's the same watermark issue for them.

49
That sounds promising. I will take a look at it once I take care of some work this morning. Do you know off-hand where the original watermark is stored in the SY zip file? It's been a long time since I looked at the watermark files.

50
Im tired of the Bash the Symbio over the head.

That seems a disingenuous description of identifying a potential bug or incompatibility. My site worked pretty well for about four months before I ran into BH or SY issues. I'm hardly bashing. Honestly I don't see anyone on MSG bashing this theme.

My apologies if it appeared I was singling you out. It was not my intention.

Fair enough. Could you please provide an example on MSG where members are bashing Symbiostock?
