Alamy.com / Surprise and Disappointment
« on: July 21, 2013, 21:03 »
Surprise ... I had two downloads on Alamy this month (I'm usually lucky to get just one).

Disappointment ... One of the sales was for a grand sum of $6.99.  After Alamy's 30% and the distributor's 40% I get the princely sum of $2.09.  And I get the privilege of waiting an untold number of months for it to clear accounting so I can go and put a down payment on a Big Mac.

iStockPhoto.com / IS Payment Report
« on: May 19, 2013, 20:58 »
This is going to sound like a newbie question, but the problem has only really popped up in the past few months.  When I check on my IS earnings, which I only do on a weekly basis, I first look at the number that comes up on the first page that appears after logging in.  I then click on the little briefcase icon next to the earnings to go to the portfolio download page, click on sort by latest download date and view whatever the composition of the earnings may have been since the previous week.  The problem I've been encountering is that the numbers don't match up.  More specifically, the dollar figure on the landing page is higher, sometimes significantly, than what is shown on the portfolio download page.  Payouts always match the higher value, which is a good thing, but I'd like to see where these earnings are coming from.  I suspect what I may be seeing is the result of PP sales, but I don't see where these may be listed.  I've tried the various links on the portfolio download page, but they don't seem to have any meaningful data on them.  Any thoughts on where I should be looking to find these sales?

Shutterstock.com / New Model Release Policy ... Good News
« on: April 18, 2013, 13:50 »
Here's the new SS model release policy.  Many foreign languages now acceptable and they are taking other agency releases, not just their own.

Veer / Veer Uploading Down?
« on: April 16, 2013, 16:19 »
I have been unable to upload to Veer this afternoon.  FTP doesn't connect and browser upload results in an unknown technical problem.

Anyone else?

iStockPhoto.com / Finally a Low Royalty
« on: November 25, 2012, 21:15 »
I was beginning to think all the talk about low ball royalties on IS were fantasy ravings; but, today I got my very own $0.10 royalty to cherish and love.  I sure hope it doesn't adversely affect the bottom line in Calgary.  I'd hate to think my greedy desire for recompense for images submitted was responsible for some weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth at IS HQ by making their continued success unsustainable.  The final straw that broke their camel's back.   ::)

General Stock Discussion / On-Line Archival Service
« on: October 22, 2012, 17:21 »
I asked this question over on the SS forum, but no one had any suggestions.

Does anyone know of an on-line archival service?  This is not the same as a back-up service, such as Carbonite, but true archival.  The difference is that with most back-up services, if you remove an image from your hard drive, it gets removed from the back-up site.  But with archival, it stays on their server regardless of whether you make changes or delete the image altogether.

At the moment my only option appears to be to buy a Blu-ray burner and start saving lots of discs, but I'd rather use an on-line service if they exist.

An interesting case.  Many of our own model releases contain similar language.  This is probably something we need to keep a close eye on.

Dreamstime.com / No Text on Dreamstime Images?
« on: May 19, 2012, 17:14 »
I just received a rejection from Dreamstime requesting I remove the text (on a white BG) from several images I had newly uploaded.  Is this a new requirement at DT?  I have several images already up and selling that include text on a white BG.  I don't follow the DT forums and didn't see any e-mail to this effect.  I know GL doesn't accept these, but this is the first time I've bumped into it on DT.

Dreamstime.com / Delete Free Files
« on: April 04, 2012, 20:34 »
Is there a way to identify and delete files on Dreamstime which have been moved to the free image file section?  I've a few early images that were moved to the free section, but I searched the site and didn't see any way to identify all that may be there or any way to delete them.

Veer / Odd Veer Rejection Reason
« on: January 31, 2012, 18:50 »
A while back I had a rejection at Veer that was particularly unhelpful.  The reason given was " Improper image editing."  I haven't a clue what this means, particularly as the same image has sold several hundred times, cumulatively, on other sites, including one EL.  Has anyone else received his rejection reason and does it have a particular meaning?  If the reviewer actually saw some problem area, I'd love to know what it was so I could fix it and perhaps gain even more sales.

123RF / 123RF Missing Rejections
« on: December 23, 2011, 18:36 »
According to my records I have had about a dozen rejections at 123RF this year.  However, when I look at the rejection tab on the 123 site, there are only five shown, including some from 2010.  The remaining rejections are neither there nor in the accepted list.  Does this mean I can re-upload these missing files?  I don't recall the rejection reason, but all of them are selling well elsewhere so should be worthy of at least another look.   ???

Veer / Review Times
« on: June 11, 2011, 15:49 »
What is the current review time for Veer?  I've had several images up for the past couple of weeks (plus one added yesterday).  Same question for 123RF.

iStockPhoto.com / Delete Image
« on: February 02, 2009, 12:28 »
I need to delete an image from IS that I have sold exclusive rights to elsewhere.  I'll be darned if I can find where to do it.  I know it's probably sitting right in front of my face, but that's probably the worst place to be.  ;D  Checked the FAQ's and other topics, but must have overlooked it.  Anyone point me in the right direction?

Software - General / HDRSHOP
« on: February 09, 2008, 14:29 »
Has anyone tried HDRSHOP?  It's an HDR program developed by the University of Southern California (USC). There are two versions.  The first is free, but is not to be used for commercial purposes.  The second costs like mad, but can be used for any purpose.   I'm just wondering if it is as good as some of the commercially available HDR programs, such as Photomatrix, etc.

Dreamstime.com / FTP Uploading To DT
« on: January 19, 2008, 15:28 »
I think I saw this topic discussed elsewhere, but can't seem to locate it right now.

I uploaded a batch of images to DT the middle of last week.  12 hours later, half of them made it through to their pending file and the other half remained behind.  Now after several days, those that didn't make it through the first time are still hung up somewhere.  Will these eventually make it through or should I try to upload them a second time?  I can see them sitting somewhere on my FTP upload screen (Filezilla) and can try to delete them from there, but don't know whether that will work or not.

Any suggestions?

I have been getting the following message for the last three days whenever I try to log in.

I get to the login page OK, but after typing in my ID and password, this message pops up.

Is anyone else having this problem?  I haven't seen anything posted about this, so it may just be me.

iStockPhoto.com / Another Confusing IS Rejection
« on: August 22, 2007, 10:37 »
I usually don't complain about rejects on IS; but, I had one the other day that has me wondering what next.  Mentioned it on the iS forum, but no response.

A few weeks back, I submitted an image of a woman jumping in an open field with a row of trees in the background.  Image was accepted, no problem.  A bit later, I thought the image may do better if the woman were completely isolated from the background.  Erased the background and resubmitted (nothing done to the woman's image, all work in TIFF).  Came back rejected as too soft.  OK, I can live with that.  Reduced the image (originally 11 mp) to 4 mp and resubmitted again.  You guessed it, rejected for being over sharpened (camera sharpening zero, RAW conversion sharpening zero, and no sharpening in post processing).  Besides, it had just been rejected for being too soft.

OK, now I have an image of a woman that is too soft, too sharp and just right.  I'm feeling like Goldilocks and IS is the three bears.  I could submit this to Scout, but I'd like a reply somewhere in my lifetime.  I could make an image in-between 11 and 4 mp and see if that's "just right", but who knows.  Or I could forget the whole thing as the image is selling elsewhere.

Any thoughts and/or suggestions?

LuckyOliver.com / Civilized LO Discussion
« on: August 03, 2007, 11:04 »
I pulled the following comment off another thread (it's my comment) as that thread was started regarding reviewing at IS and evolved into a brief discussion about LO.  Given another thread about LO on another site, and some rather inappropriate attacks that, while expressing an individual's feelings, were never-the-less out of line, I thought it may be good to give others an opportunity to discuss LO in a more "civilized" manner.  ;D  Are there problems at LO ... sure.  Are there good points ... also sure.  The following has been my experience there and what I believe to be the reasons for it.  No LO bashing, just reasoned analysis.  It accomplishes nothing to get emotional and rant on these forums.  Only shows your state of mind and clouds your ability to think straight.  So ... what have others experienced and how have you reacted to that experience and possibly learned from it?

The first thing I thought of when I saw the note was that this was an LO review.  I've been with them since last year and love the way their reviewers (bouncers) respond to submissions.  That being said, I do have a major problem with LO.  Zero sales.  Same images (and keywords) that are all selling well on IS, SS, DT and elsewhere have not had a single download on LO.  I don't blame LO for this.  I'm sure they are pushing my images the same as anyone else's.  I assume it's the market they are addressing.  Each agency has their own target market and marketing strategy.  And I know others are doing well there. If my images were not doing well elsewhere, it would be obvious where the problem lay.  But since they are doing well, several with triple digit downloads, I can only conclude the market LO is addressing is looking for images other than my particular style/subject matter.  Not a problem.  Perhaps later on, as I branch out into other types of subject matter, this will change and I will be able to see a trend.  In the meantime, I'll just stick with both what I know works and where it works.

iStockPhoto.com / Fantastic Review
« on: August 01, 2007, 18:25 »
It's not often you get a rejection that you can be happy about.  The following message was on a rejection from iStock:

'Please downsize this image to a medium size image to help the focus of
this very pretty image ; thanks for your understanding

Now this is something I can understand and appreciate.

Kudo's to this reviewer!   ;D

Now just watch someone say this is one of their new automatic rejetion buttons!   :(

General Stock Discussion / Image Resolution
« on: July 12, 2007, 22:57 »
I thought I understood resolution, but suddenly someone is saying I'm wrong.  Fair enough, but let's see what others think.

Is there such a thing as a "high resolution" camera, or does the term only apply to print images?  Would a 4 megapixel camera be considered to have the same resolution as a 16 megapixel camera (extreme limits)?  My contention is that the 16 megapixel camera is higher resolution because, for the same image size, there are more pixels per inch, or DPI if you prefer for prints, than a camera that has a lower megapixel rating, and therefore its resolution is greater.

What has been said is that if an image is print ready, it is considered high resolution.  I am disagreeing with this statement, but if I'm wrong, I'm willing to learn.  This statement came up in reply to a question of what is considered a high resolution image?  I'd still like an answer to that question.  And if there is a difference in camera resolution, what would be considered the threshold between normal and high resolution ... 8 mp, 10 mp, 12 mp or ???

This can lead to another tricky question.  If a camera is of sufficient resolution, is it possible for it to show too much detail, enough that very fine detail, particularly in the background but elsewhere as well, could be mistaken for artifacts or possibly noise, depending on the detail's shape, color and size?

General Stock Discussion / Unbeliveable
« on: July 10, 2007, 14:58 »
Truth is stranger than fiction.  I posted an image on SS, DT and IS at the same time yesterday.  Both DT and IS finished their review today, less than 24 hours after posting.  And SS ... still waiting.  180 degrees from what it used to be!
