iStockPhoto.com / Inspectors: Who are they?
« on: April 18, 2011, 19:58 »
Anyone know much about the iStockPhoto inspectors? Who are they? How are they chosen? How much get paid? Training? How many? (in US and other countries).

Just wondering...

General Stock Discussion / Do you continue to upload?
« on: April 14, 2011, 15:46 »
Some of you have large portfolios producing significant income. Are many of you at a point where you upload less or not at all and just enjoy the fruits of your labor? If so, do your earnings diminish if you do not consistently add to your collection?

I guess what I am asking is, is it feasible (or logical)  to build a healthy portfolio -- 3,000 to 8,000 images for instance with an RPI of +$1 -- and then sit back and do nothing. Would such a situation be, in a sense, create a nice retirement account that will hold its value or perhaps increase its "dividends".

Can you retire from microstock and reap a nice income into eternity?

Shutterstock.com / Are my income projections correct?
« on: November 18, 2010, 17:15 »
I've contributed to SS since July and now have about 130 photos in my portfolio.

I make about $2.00 a day (8 to 12 images average)

So that is $60 a month. Do you feel this is below average, normal or above average?

Can I assume a constant multiple of:
100 images = $60 a month
1000 images = $600 a month
3000 images = $1800 a month $21,600
6000 images = $2600 a month $31,200 a year

Also, I am open to feedback regarding my portfolio.

Thanks for your comments :)

Anyone know where to purchase these miniature figurines?

Been searching for hours with no luck.

It seems like if IS REJECTS an image, and you are Exclusive...you should be allowed to sell it somewhere else. What is the ruling on that. I suppose you would need a different account etc...

57
Have you ever heard of anyone buying their own images (or having a friend) in order to reach, more quickly, the 250 downloads required to become exclusive? Let's say you are 60 or so DLs away from 250 and want to get the benefits of iStock exclusive and not want to wait the few months it might take to reach that magic number.

Would IS frown on this? Is it not allowed. Would they find out if you have a friend do it?

Your thoughts.

General Stock Discussion / You just might be a microstockaholic ...

You just might be a microstockaholic if...

- you look up in the sky and see artifacts
- you buy produce dependent upon how it might photograph
- You style all your food before you eat it
- you've asked your girlfriend if you can photograph her while she brushes her teeth
- a batch of rejected images will have you pissed and slightly depressed for up to 3 hours
- you start "You just might be a microstockaholic ..." threads on INTERNET forums

Is there much data available regarding new contributors to microstock? I've wondered if there is  a constant or increasing flow of new shooters actively submitting work. In other words, is the competition increasing, stagnant or becoming less.

I became a contributor at IS about three months ago and found the experience VERY frustrating. As a creative director for 30-years I felt I knew what would sell. Plus, I  was a fairly good photographer ( I thought ) with semi - pro level equipment and had art directed hundreds of photo shoots from table top to all kinds of models. Then came the iStock Inspector Beat Down. I had a 40% acceptance for the first few months. I was ready to quit but sucked it up and kept shooting (now at 65%). My sales are marginal but show signs of optimism... so I persevere.

It made me realize that it is HARD to shoot acceptable stock that sells. One has to invest in a quality camera, lenses, strobes, soft boxes, props, lights, stands, quality laptop (if tethered), and Photoshop. Then you need to learn all the techniques for using your camera and software. And then you need to upload alot and that means spending alot of time shooting, editing, retouching, keywording, submitting... and then you marvel at the 25 cents you earned today. THAT IS if your stuff gets past the inspectors. ARRGG!

So i imagine that only the most determined photo-hobbyist survive and a large number of contributors try it out and give up. I read on a blog that only a small percent of contributors make up about 80% of the uploads.

So do you think the pool of new contributors growing or slowing?

General Stock Discussion / Anyone a Getty contributor?
« on: August 28, 2010, 04:02 »
I am considering applying to Getty but cannot find much about the experience. Yep, I searched this topic and understand the submission process and "house" acceptance and $50 fees...etc.

What I want to know is, if you are a Getty contributor, how is it working out for you financially and regarding your creative fulfillment... and any other thoughts about the joint.

I feel most of the microstock sites just want happy-shiny, sanitized people and things which kinda limits ones creative ambitions.

Thanks

After extensive research into various photo categories  at the major sites, it appears to me that some topic areas of microstock are just so overly saturated with quality images that shooting and submitting is pointless.

Some of those include images with:
- stethoscopes
- laboratory equipment (test tubes, beakers, microscopes)
- dual bell alarm clocks
- piggy banks
- gavels (legal images)
- sexy woman
- people on the beach
- flowers
- sunsets
- happy business people on white backgrounds (yuri!)

I am sure there are more. Add to it...

If I am wrong... tell me. I hope I am. But this is how it appears to me.
