Graphic and web designer for 30 years. Stock Photography has spoiled me.  I hate (most) clients and don't budge on pricing with the branding work and don't take the crap I used to. Ya get jaded over the years. Life is so much better now.

iStockPhoto.com / CSA_Images and Vetta
« on: May 10, 2013, 18:33 »
CSA_Images must have cut a deal with Getty/iStock for its illustrations (but considered photos?) and now fills up the first 36 pages of Vetta New Files. Check it out. This may be signs of the image factories reaction to the the unlimited uploads.

If I was a buyer and wanted to check out some new Vetta, this would make me nuts. I mean, sure they are good illustrations but 36 pages of retro archive "PHOTOS" just seems nuts.

I was talking to a friend who does alot of remote location shoots without internet connections -- the cloud will be worthless to him. :P

Lesson #1: Don't comment on something when you have no idea what the situation is. Also, one who posts only to be negative is one who is not happy with himself. This is a site to help others, not underhandedly cut them down. Hope that gives you a little insight and helps you to change.  ;)

And your explanation is...?

;)

Lesson number 36: don't show client something that you cannot provide ;)

Site Related / Re: Too Many SymbioStock Threads?
« on: April 13, 2013, 20:27 »
I'm always a little self-conscious we are dominating the top page a little too much. The same would happen if anyone else brought their main forums into here.

At any time (if its Leaf's wish) we can take certain forums over to the www.symbiostock.com site. The site is not ready yet, but it could happen. Just keep me posted.

Shouldn't all these threads be over there anyway?

Newbie Discussion / Re: Model Mayhem site
« on: April 10, 2013, 20:39 »
nice look. you might want to contact some agencies for contract work. MM is full of horney guys with DSLRs who call themselves photographers. be cautious. bring escorts

Also find some pro models to spell out the biz. it is not as glamorous as  you might think. Whiten teeth, learn about  your make up and hair. A pro model does not need alot of instructions and delivers with confidence. it takes practice in the mirror and knowing how your body moves best.

it takes time and you can make it work if you want it. Good luck

Pali is a good guy. He has helped me in the past when I have site-mailed him at IS. And willingly shared information with me. It is cool that he is offering this information and he has his reasons to do so. I feel i would be more hesitant in sharing this knowledge. But glad he is willing to do so.

Canon / Re: 5D Mark II tethered question.
« on: March 16, 2013, 09:51 »
I had same thing happened to me in 2011. The repair cost then was $230 from Canon Factory Service Center (in US). It was not covered in warranty as it was considered as physical damage.

For eye-fi to work, you need to get a CF -> SD adapter, some claimed it not very reliable (at least it's not officially supported). I shoot Mark III now and the eye-fi works just fine (very short distance though).

The other option is Canon's $700 WFT (what?) unit.

Thanks Fashon
I have been reading alot of reviews at Amazon and most of the pros feel the software is buggy and the DL speeds are very slow even for jpeg.

Using the Eye-fi, How is your DL speed and overall performance (bug issues?) with the Mark III? I am considering making the move to the III but not sure if the advantages will be worth the expense.

Canon / Re: 5D Mark II tethered question.
« on: March 15, 2013, 22:31 »
Why shoot tethered? Wireless alternatives are just so cheap nowadays. I'm sure it'll be cheaper to go wireless rather than having your camera's socket repaired. You could even use a basic flash gun, mounted onto your hot-shoe, to trigger your strobes. One very successful microstocker I've shot with (back in 2007) used that method all the time.

PS: I've heard you can even get non-tethered electric telephones nowadays too. Who'd have thought it, eh?

Thanks for the reply.
Can you tell me your set up? I want to shoot into Lightroom 4 with about the same download speed of wired. A Paul Buff Cyber Commander is in my hot shoe so that is occupied. Thanks again for your advice

Bill

the wifi (Eye fi) works for me well...

How do you make it work? It does not work with a Canon 5DMark II

Canon / 5D Mark II tethered question.
« on: March 15, 2013, 19:46 »
The 5-pin, Mini-B digital terminal on my Canon 5D Mark II died in the middle of a shoot last week. Tested with new cord and different computers and tested all elements with my other Canon Rebel. All indications point to the camera's digital terminal on my camera. Not surprising as it gets jerked around in there alot. I just bought a JERK STOPPER.

Anyway, before I send it back to Canon (ugh) for repair. Has anyone had their Mini-B, digital terminal stop connecting when shooting tethered? Any home fixes? Costs for repair?

Thanks

If any of our MSG friends do get the opportunity to contribute to the survey then please ensure that, amongst their dissatisfactions, they highlight the despicable management attitude to contributors, as illustrated in the the treatment of SJLocke and others.

I took the survey - no questions about that but a place at the end to air your thoughts.

166
I got that survey and participated. Really felt like they were trying to determine market share and top of mind awareness plus price thresholds of buyers. Then there were questions about ease of use and content quality.

i think this is a good thing. the survey was indeed created by professionals after alot of discussions which tells ya they are really digging to find answers in order to improve iStockphoto. I agree that GETTY really does not know what to do with IS. But at least they are throwing some research and time to make it better.

As a follow up -- all images shot with my new Canon G15 were (standard) rejected by IS. They were shot in filtered natural light at 80 ISO with minimal post processing. They were just not sharp due to the lens quality and small sensor. Back to Best Buy it goes.

Good luck all you point-and-shoot hopefuls.

...gemme DSLR and big sensors

I wonder if tbe quality is actually the reason.  I would like to see a photo with an older 6.2mp cannon or nikon compared with the quality of the g15 and the other 4/3 cameras. Or are the inspectors just looking at the metadata and rejecting

Well actually the photos were portraits of Sean Locke come to think of it...

Stocksy / Re: Stocksy - Are You Curious? Response?
« on: February 25, 2013, 16:09 »
It will be interesting if Stocksy becomes a niche player with "artsy" (get it?) images like the old Tony Stone stuff but at a mid-tier RF price point. But often the production costs of those images can get high which is not good for microstock.

I guess we will know on 30 days.

...pondering

Well, I pulled out my OLD Canon Rebel 300D DSLR i bought in 2003, dusted it off and fired it up. Did some test shots and loved it. I can use all my lenses and memory cards and has viewfinder with data. Sure it is old but it works fine, images are sharp (with good glass) and it's paid for LOL

Sure it is not as small as most point-and-shoots but it take better images, is rather compact and rugged and the perfect backup, walk around shooter for me.

...problem solved.

Take a look at Pentax K-01.  APS-C sensor, interchangeable lenses, mirrorless.  Fits in a coat pocket (not a shirt though) with the 40mm lens.  I got mine for $319 body only.  Same sensor as in Nikon D7000.

Just checked out the images at dp review. VERY nice. Do you use that alot for microstock and have good approval results? Is this the ticket? What lens? The 50mm looks hot.

Thanks

I have been looking for a similar system but no luck yet.  I have been judging point and shoots by going to http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/samples and viewing full size images from various point and shoots.  Everything I have looked at, including the Fuji Finepix 100, has too much noise and has a sharpness issue, at least in the samples posted on DP Review.

Thanks Mantis. :)
I have spent alot of time there as well and feel the same. The Canon G1x has a larger sensor but then... no interchangeable lens. And at its price, you might as well get a Rebel. And then you have about the same bulk as a 5D.
