I am living in a country with no social welfare benefits like unemployment money, food stamps or stimulus check like in America. The alternative would be begging in the streets.
I envy people who can quit SS and argue about their lost self-respect or wasted time, because they simply do not depend on the money from SS. In times of corona I do more than ever before.
I am self-reliant, I am self-employed, I am proud of me and I am getting the respect from my family and people around me. Ten US cents here might be more then 10 Dollars in rich countries. In my eyes protest against SS is as useless as anything. And I am wondering where this hate and ire comes from?
If people with provoking opinions are called TROLLs, I am one of them.

Your position might be representative of other artists from underdeveloped countries who find image uploading to SS still worthwhile. Taking that into perspective and the low quality of new images being uploaded, SS may gradually become a go-to outlet for acceptance and distribution of the art work from the third world countries. If SS gets sold and the new owner moves their offices from the Empire State building to somewhere in central Africa, that could further reduce SS expenses and improve their bottom line.

Oringer has made no secret of the fact that he sees SS as a marketplace for people in poor countries to sell images to people in rich countries. He stated as much years ago. I have to find his quote.
I'd be surprised if he or any other stock company wouldn't. People in poor countries have less cash to buy images and will work for less. No different from many industries such as clothing.

"Will the actions achieve the goal."   In the end I think it it comes down to whether you believe what is happening is an inevitable result of the business model and the way markets in a capitalist environment work or collective action can change that. My view is this is inevitable and the seeds were sown from day one. Its not as if SS are the first to reduce commissions they've just done it in a particularly brutal manner.

153
The second question is a nonsense, if you read it carefully. Are actions realistic? Did she mean are expected results of these actions realistic? Or did she mean are actions real? Actions are real, few millions of pictures are disabled and the number of weekly submitted pictures is halved.
On the other hand, I don't agree with the statement - I don't work for 10c. First of all, it is not 10c that you earn for an image, it is a download. An image can still make a lot more. Secondly, how can one work for 25c or 38c at the first place? It was already ridiculously low. The same way there is a lot of negativity about people still supporting SS by accepting to work for 10c download, there was a lot of negativity about all of us working for 25c-38c by the majority of photography community in the world in the previous years (macrostock photographers, fashion, automotive, real estate, wedding etc photographers). We made this happen. It is our fault. We made this monster called SS. And now we are blaming the ones that are still playing by the rules that we came up with.
I think we know what was meant unless you read it to try and punch holes in it.

154
If you go back to the original post they are fair questions to me and no one has answered the second one yet. There's more bullying than trolling on this thread from what I can see. Excluding and forcing out people that don't confirm to an opinion is a sure way of denying reality.

155
It is a pity for people who continue to upload their work to Shutterstock. Sometimes this is a very complex work, clearly not worth 10 cents. But smart people say that the whole world is gradually moving towards a slave-owning society. To replace capitalism.

Capitalism supports modern slavery and of course slavery isn't uploading photos to SS and being paid a few cents.  That's not slavery.  This is slavery:

https://www.antislavery.org/slavery-today/modern-slavery/
Yes though I'm not sure Capitalism is any worse than other economic/political arrangements in this respect. I think what we see at Shutterstock and similar crowd sourcing enterprises is an extreme form of capitalism with an unbalanced market. Globalisation and technology will probably see this happen in many other knoweledge based markets.

Microstock is the polar opposite of fine art.

Dear Uncle Pete and Georgep7

Thank you for sharing :). These are quite interesting topics and to be honest didn't, know that there where Online Sales for Photos and that this was a lucrative business. What are the credentials to be able to make it besides creativity and a good feel of what people are looking for?
For instance, do I need to be a Photographer holding a Diploma or Certificate or can I just be a Hobby Photographer and still be able to make it in this business?

Thank you for your reply and sincerely
One of the good things is that is a totally equal opportunity business...you are judged solely on the quality of your images.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Which agencies are DEAD?!
« on: July 15, 2020, 03:40 »
I'm quite surprised how well my sales are holding up so far. I'm not sure it will last. When government intervention starts to tail off I think economically things are going to get worse.

159
Trying to submit and I'm getting all kinds of new warning boxes, like my description matches my title, or it isn't long enough, or "Congratulations" on my unique title, and it seems to be taking my description and adding those words to my keywords...
I've always had those and adding words in description to keywords. You have to change the title or description the rest I ignore.

Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe Stock Contributor Down?

Was down for me a short time working now

I had quoted the above post by Pauws but this requires a new post since it's not specifically directed at anyone so Tyler, please delete previous post.

Here goes:
Right, that's why we joined Microstock, we're all loaded but still needed to sell our work for $0,38 a pop.
You think we don't need the money? Those who take action are just some rich folks?
Some people here, it's written on your foreheads.
At first I thought you guys worked for SS but now I think maybe some of you are just that stupid not to realize what is going on here. You try to make up all sorts of excuses for people to stay on SS probably because you also have your portfolio up and you have to make up an excuse for that right. Irony is many of you can afford to quit SS because it's not even your main income.

I posted this in another thread but will do it again. If we all go back to SS along with those who never left and eventually drive the price down even more then it's game over for everyone, yes including those who can still manage now with a few hundred bucks! So the rich, the poor, the disabled, the smart, the retired, the rational thinking, h.ll even the SS fanclub will be in trouble!
Meanwhile other agencies will follow because if we accept those conditions at SS then why should other agencies pay us more? Why should P5 give us better conditions? Why should Adobe continue to pay us a better cut? Get the picture?

No more jump ship while you can, GAME OVER EVERYWHERE AND FOR EVERYONE!!!

But keep supporting SS, we will all go back and do the same, where can I join the SS fanclub btw?
or maybe we are not so stupid as we think we can beat the simple economic laws of supply and demand. We don't need excuses or permission from you to make our own decisions.

What does it take for them to wake up anyway? 0,01$? They rather continue complaining about it then take action? Do they have any self-respect? any value for their work? Any working brain cell left in there?
Their earnings are dropping so much soon they can't even use it as an excuse to stick around anymore. What will they do then, wait and hope for things to turn around at SS? chr.st!

It's because of this submissive mentality Shutterstock or any other company does whatever they want!

I don't blame Shutterstock anymore I blame them! and I do hope their sales will go down to 0,01$. Go for it Shutterstock, take everything they've got! They are too f.cking dumb anyway!

Even Jon himself said if you don't like it then take your content and go yet they still don't get the message.
I have never seen such a sad bunch of people in my whole life, beyond pathetic!
And they are supposed to be educated and skilled professionals/hobbyists. If they were new at this and don't have a clue yet then maybe it would be forgivable but these are experienced contributors for gods sake!

So to those who are still active at SS, stop whining and suck it up! you get what you deserve! now drop your pants and bend over!

I don't like to criticize people personally for their business (in)decisions, but I also don't understand why anyone would stick with SS after those sub dollar sales.

I guess it's what they call in poker "staying married to your hand", i.e. when you're holding AA but the board tells you you're beat anyway. You don't want to give up your precious AA, so you stay in the game against better judgement...Back to the case of Shutterstock: contributors don't like what they see, but after years of building their portfolio and enjoying good revenue, they find it hard to quit suddenly. So they stick it out with SS, disgruntled and disappointed, clinging to the false hope it'll get better. Hopefully, after some time most of them will see they're better off without SS.
Its perfectly rational not to close your port with Shutterstock as the money spent creating it is sunk.       So while you may consider others immoral in some way they are probably simply making a business decision.  "From now on I'm thinking only of me."

Major Danby replied indulgently with a superior smile: "But, Yossarian, suppose everyone felt that way."

"Then," said Yossarian, "I'd certainly be a damned fool to feel any other way, wouldn't I?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Sales falling everywhere
« on: June 27, 2020, 01:22 »
For me sales are holding up surprisingly well....the recession is likely to be long and deep  though so I'm not banking on it lasting.

You stand more chance of prosecuting God because life isn't fair.

General Stock Discussion / Re: I will not boycot SS.
« on: June 13, 2020, 13:52 »
I think it's possible to make more rather than less revenue from the new Shutterstock earnings structure.

It depends on the quantity of your image sales and what the portion is between subscription and on-demand/single & other.

James Wheeler posted a video about his calculations based on the new earnings structure https://youtu.be/UJT1RqMGHkY
Its possible I will win the lottery tonight and its a double rollover!!! Its not very likely but it doesn't mean a vanishingly small proportion wont achieve it. I don't think even SS are hiding the fact that overall the changes are designed to reduce overall payouts.

166
I think if you just combine the right buzzwords - community, internet, disruption, vertical market, crowd sourced...mix it all up somehow, maybe add bitcoin and crypto... have a website with an earcatching name and sleek design...and....an app! with a bit of a game built in, likes and hearts and comments...I think you can attract a crazy amount of money.

In a zero interest world investors are desperate, so they throw a lot of money at all these start ups that dont understand or use the tech.

And every time there is one that makes it, 5000 new platforms  are showered with money.
With the spectacular failure of Wemark I doubt any investors with a modicum of nous would consider investing in a microstock start up they have probably moved onto the next big thing........

167
One of the issues is not about what the image factories are doing now but what they will do. If they can't achive a return on investment they will stop producing costly images or do the marketing and selling themselves. Acurs and a few others do it and its becoming a more attractive proposition. Microstock is not the only channel.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Average EPD so far for June
« on: June 12, 2020, 11:53 »
Down from .67 to just above .50.

Frankly it was a garbage stock even before this. Something for traders maybe, who play the chart not the investment, that's why it dips and peaks so much. Low volume. Not really even on anyones radar.

Shareholders may actually like this move as they like the idea of less at the bottom for more at the top. But ultimately it will depend on profit margin. People who don't actively invest sometimes don't realize that investing is about growth, not revenue. Same revenue year after year is not a good investment, as that means what you bought the stock for doesn't change, ie you don't make money.

I actually transfer all the money I make (which hasn't been much considering I just got started with stock photography a couple months ago) from stock photography into my stock investment account. Been a photographer for 20 years and actively trade the market for 5. Never even considered this stock. It's just not even talked about, which isn't a good thing.
"People who don't actively invest sometimes don't realize that investing is about growth, not revenue. " not necessarily some utiilty and commodity stocks are about steady dividend revenue....IT type stocks tend to be at the other end of the spectrum....SS price has always been based around some golden future that I always found unconvincing. Then again I thought the same about Amazon.

Now we are "loudmouths" for daring to voice on an opinion on a forum.
Since he did not ask for opinions but for datas...
Sometimes we don't get what we ask for.....not his/her forum tough. If people want to create their own forums and set up their rules they are quite welcome to.

171
So many short-minded people in here  ::)

@astockphotographer088
You should make an anonymous poll at the end of June to collect the datas the way you want and avoid all these loudmouths who already know the end of the story.
People tend go get angry when they are condescended to and called idiots. Not listening to people who have been in the business for years  or have professional qualifications in statistics is what I would call short minded. Now we are "loudmouths" for daring to voice on an opinion on a forum.

In your letter you promised that this new system was a + for level 5 or level 6 and that it would keep level 4 the same. Why are these point zeros so low? Why is the rpd of everyone declining? And why should we accept a double down on January?

Where in the email did it promise that it was a + for level 5 or level 6 and that it would keep level 4 the same? I saw no such promise.
It kind of implied that but anyone with any experience of modern management speak and communications from Microstock sites over the years would have seen through that in a nano-second.

173
Why ya'all keep responding to this troll is beyond me. Just ignore him already, jesus.
You are right of course but its amusing sometimes  :o

174
Negotiation? I only see one idiot here when did Shutterstock ever negotiate with its suppliers?

175
I don't get this at all...you want to "prove" something to Shutterstock they already know. They have complete access to all the statistics and no doubt are exactly aware of the effect of what they are doing.
