Photography Equipment / Re: rollup white background
« on: November 16, 2014, 00:45 »
Try checking out trade show displays.  They have a lot of back drops and banner displays.  Might get pricy for the ice you want but you may be able to negotiate better pricing since you don't want it printed.  Some to the banner stands are like a reverse film screen.  They have an arm extending up ad the screen pulls up from the floor.

Or if you can secure anything to the ceiling you could install a couple of large hooks and suspend a roll of paper on a pipe.

Wow - dismissing Jo Ann with a cheap comment like that will not win you any friends here.

Is the SSL determined by the theme (ie: Symbiostock) or is it a function of the host?  I seem to recall something about SSL on the C-panel.  Perhaps you could contact your host with the question to see if their customer service can clarify. I'll have to research later when I am home from my day job.

so a stocker living in KABUL is ok while anyone from Iran is now a pariah ??

what the he-ll ... americans are a laughing stock.

by the way, yeah there were sanctions even 15 yrs ago for some countries and i remember our marketing manager in a well known US corp selling our products to Dubai and Kuwait as a loophole to skip the sanctions and the trade regulations, basically using middlemen or "selling by proxy".

the OP could see if he can open a bank account in one of the gulf countries or even in pakistan or afghanistan and reupload all his portfolio in a fresh new account.

Parent company Getty may be US based, but isn't iStock in Canada?  Seems they follow Canadian tax regulations.  Are they following Canadian sanctions too?

There's an "assets" on the CC panel thingy that looks like stock illustrations from various people. Never really looked into it but I think they are free to use? Could be connected to that, maybe they are going to expand it into a paid offering.

Maybe this is the "test" that Dreamstime wanted the free images for.

You use a sick day from your day job so you can stay home and shoot stock..

You plan the tailgate menu based on how it will photograph.

You have a Christmas tree in your basement year round for holiday backgrounds.

New Sites - General / Re: new site stocktal

Hello Mantis,

Staff approved these images, they are still currently approved.

They have been checked and are probably going to be removed. His/her previous 200 images are wonderful, not sure what this sudden change is about.

He/she can contact me if they need more information.

cheers.

This is one of the most illogical comments I've seen in these forums.  A contributor is a respected photographer with several thousand photos in their portfolio taken over the years leading international travel tours.  In addition to landscapes and cultural images they include detail shots, ie: currency images from the countries they visited, and you are accusing him of uploading images that he didn't take and say you plan remove them because an isolated currency shot looks different than a landscape.

I thought variety was desireable in a portfolio.

Do you have your Cart manager plugin activated?  That sometimes conflicts with other plugins or settings and deactivating it is a workaround.  Have you addedd any new plugins that might interfere?  What changes have you made since it was last working properly?

From a buyer on the Facebook page: "I got a promo email from you yesterday offering 10 free credits when I purchase 10 -- price listed in the promo is $2/credit. YESTERDAY! I went to your site today to make the purchase, and find it seems the whole deal is obsolete -- yet it says in the email it's valid until December 31st, 2014. What's going on here?"

Fail.

So now it's XXXL for a dollar? (Assuming the promo is working for someone)
I wonder how they are figuring our commissions on those sales. For those on the low end is it 15% of $2.00 for the total 20 credits, or are they spreading out the purchase to $1.00 per credit so  they pay 15% of a dollar? (Can you say dollar photo club?). Or do we get 15% of 2.00 for 10 credits and 15% of free for the others.  So much for Lobo's $8.00 to $15.00 per credit.  We can expect the low royalties to continue.

That's their description, not mine, but I wondered what the food shooters here think of these?

First thing I wanted to ask, was so many are straight down shots. Is that what's "trending" now.  :) Or only for Instagrams.

And second, since I haven't used it that much, (not a phone camera fan) is there a setting for "Do Nothing"? I only see ways to alter the image and somehow ruin it or change them into some aberration.

Yes, straight down shots are popular - take a look at Saveur, Food Network Magazine, Martha Stewart Magazine, etc. and you will see it used a lot.  Seen on blogs and Pinterest too.

I haven't used my phone camera much either but I believe there is a "do nothing" option.

The examples shown were certainly not what I would have chosen as examples of great images you can find on Instagram.

Thank you iStock!

a file that usually made me $4.50 to $4.90 just made me $1.50

Once again, you screwed us BIG
I don't get it.

If you don't like it, just pull out your portfolio, nobody is forcing you to contribute; it's a free market.

Edit: Yeah, downvote as much as you like, but that's the reality. Nobody owes you (us) anything. But we can shape the market because we have a choice. Stop being a victim. If you don't like it, do something instead of bitching.

It's not that hard of a concept to grasp.  One week you are making a certain level of income.  The source controlling that income says starting next week I will be paying you less, much less, for the same effort and content.  No supplier would be happy with that and many will pull their portfolio.  But those relying on the income may need to keep the meager portion for awhile while they implement plan B and they are not likely to keep quiet in the interim.

It's not unlike supplying Walmart.  High volume for the supplier offsets tight margins but when they start squeezing you for more it becomes unsustainable for the supplier yet to walk away creates it's own set of financial issues.

63
I can't help but wonder if some buyers who purchased expensive Vetta or other high priced files in the last several weeks will be asking for a refund then repurchase the file at the new lower credit price.  Can we expect to see a lot of posts about higher than normal refunds next month?

64
Perhaps he has downloaded packs from torrent sites and put them on Flickr for his students and colleagues to use to illustrate presentations.  Lots of the isolated fruits and veggies that were on the site would have been useful for that purpose.

I had one this month.  First one in about a year.  Can't say I expect much with a small port but a little more a activity would be nice.

Had my first sale in 3-4 months ... $0.52.  50 percent commissions don't amount to a hill of beans if you don't get any sales or the ones you do get are for low value sales.  People say just leave your portfolio on line.  Eventually sales will add up.  While true, you also need to consider the time frame.  At the rate I've been seeing, I'll be lucky to see a payout in my lifetime and my heirs may not live long enough to see anything in their lifetimes.  :-[

If and when I ever hit payout, I'm out of there.

I felt the same way then logged in one day to see a sale that netted me about $40 - popped me right over payout thresholds.  We just need a lot more of those.

I was just about to correct Ron's misconception about the forum being read only but I see that Steve beat me to it.  It's been available for weeks and mentioned here and on our FB group more than once. For anyone that is looking for it you can find it here where Steve generously offered to host it.  http://pix-now.com/community/

That said, it is quiet with minimal posting.  I attribute that mostly to the loss of momentum without the influx of new sites but also because people are not fiddling with their sites and the current version(s) are stable.  Without the regular addition of enhancements things seem to be sailing smoothly.  I'm also selective now on where I will spend my time helping others on the forum too after my last experience.  Without going into great detail I'll just say that someone complained long and loud about a single registration problem and no support.  I spent time doing test registrations on his site and could not duplicate it.  Others tried to help too.  Leo chimed in and offered help.  I offered up the suggestion of a plug in I use that can be set up to allow about 15+ social login ID's to sign into your Symbio site.  I have no idea if he ever got the problem fixed but it seemed like it was possibly a problem with the registrants provider blocking something since others couldn't duplicate it.  He came back a few days later with continued complaining and never acknowledged those that offered help.  After I had that experience I can see why Leo lost his spirit to continue as he saw that magnified.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: RC's not increasing in line with sales
« on: August 10, 2014, 08:23 »
I just recently noticed that too.  I hadn't seen the thread about it.  I've been ignoring my RC's ever since they took away the added credits for photo plus and left all independent contributors at the Main level despite early words that they would be moving some of our best to higher levels.  I had been on track to at least maintain my current level but once they made the change I gave up caring because there was no way it would happen.

Try reaching out on Facebook and Twitter. You might get their attention via social media

There is still a good amount of documentation in the Symbiostock forum here and you can ask any questions that come up too.

That's great! Would you mind telling which plugin you're using?

I'm using a plugin called Social Login by OneAll - http://www.oneall.com/
You can find it in the Wordpress plugins and upload it from there.

It was a bit of work to set them up but the tutorials were very good.  Easy enough to follow but it did take a bit of time.

I have my site set up that buyers can use any one of five social media/blog ID's to log in as well.  They can click on the icons for Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, Wordpress or Blogger and log in with that instead of creating a new registration.  When setting them up I tried to minimize as much as possible the information the app reads in hopes that it doesn't turn someone away.

Jen, bunhill & cuppacoffee, thanks for the illustrations and commentary on use options. I was wondering too how that type of image would be used and your commentary was enlightening.

75
I believe part of the legal language relates to how you use the image.  Sensitive use is highly restricted and the end user is responsible for using images within those terms.  If you are using people pics to imply a political endorsement or suggesting the image is someone involved in child porn you are on the hook for legal action should the model come after you with their lawyers, not the site that sold you the image.

If you are blogging about the health benefits of natural foods and want to include images of various meals you have little to be concerned about.
