Dreamstime.com / Re: 6.93$ for HD Footage what a shame
« on: January 24, 2014, 14:10 »
I have avoided this problem by simply not uploading my video to Dreamstime.  There is no point supporting a start up (in regards to Video, Dreamstime is still a start up) that has lower prices and lower commissions than the industry leader (Pond5).

Too Right!

CrackerClips is linking through to Pond5 from his Symbiostock site. Good advertising I guess, but not the same as self hosting.

[Lee, might be better if you had planned to charge a small fee for watching the live event. Even if not actually live but with delay that allowed us to follow the event. This would be great and would be an option for many of us. And the event would have far greater impact.

Good idea!

Okay... So is CC management taking a voluntary %20 cut in salary to match contributor losses?

Newbie Discussion / Re: Rejected Application to Istock Help!
« on: March 11, 2013, 00:10 »
Agreed, subscriptions are a bum deal for photographers but so is being hog tied with exclusivity to one greedy agency that doesn't have the decency to pay 50% when others can do it without demanding exclusivity.

There is a lot of money being left on the table by microstock contributors and that won't change unless a majority of contributors start favoring the fair trade agencies.

%35-%40 at best and your future efforts being tied to the whim of some corporate bean counters is not great in my books either. I think the most intelligent deal out there right now is %50 and set your own prices. Which is what a fair agency like Pond5 is offering. Istock and subscription deals are just plain usury and because the content is crowd sourced they seemingly can get away with it.

I wouldn't encourage anyone to submit to Istock, after all that has gone on with them recently!

You should probably wait until 2nd Feb and resubmit. I hear they will need a lot more contributors after that.

Lol! Why is that? (I'm curious)

because there is a small contingent of photographers that hate IS. if you are good at what you do IS is second to none (in my opinion) to any other microstock agency.

Yes, %15 gotta love em!

59
For an independent like me it's probably best if IS just plods on as is. At least this keeps the IS exclusives out of the agencies I submit to. :-)

General Stock Discussion / Re: timelapse fps
« on: December 09, 2012, 23:55 »
Really depends on the speed of movement in your subject. I tend to shoot most stuff at higher frame rates (1fps or 1fp2s) since its easy to increase the speed in post if needed. Sometimes its nice to have the ability to adjust and determine what looks best. Also some subjects are unpredictable and you may end up using only a portion of the shot. If you are doing stuff that takes hours to happen a high fps is not the best plan of course.

Pond5 / Re: Image sales at Pond 5
« on: December 08, 2012, 16:07 »
Video sales are very good compared to other sites. Photo sales are still slow but the deal is good with
%50 rate and set your own price. That's the kind of deal lots of folks are clammering for! It hasn't taken them very long to get into the middle tier on the MSG poll results once they started accepting photos directly.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: SOOOO Mad!!!!!
« on: November 29, 2012, 10:03 »
Years ago I had occasional refunds at SS but they seem to have fixed the problem or are * up the costs of fraud. I strongly agree with all who say the retailer or CC need to be the gate keepers here, and not the supplier. After all, that's part of what their gross percentage of the sale is meant to cover!

I just had $40 of refunds at IS yesterday and like the OP, am sooooMAD about it!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Pond5 Rating as Mid Tier
« on: November 07, 2012, 13:16 »
The average price of HD video clips on Pond5 is currently $64.23. In my opinion pricing anything (regardless of perceived simplicity) below $40 or $50 is shooting yourself in the foot and pulling down the overall market price for video. There are numerous producers selling quite unremarkable footage for a lot more than that. I think it's fair to price footage at whatever the market will bear. After all that's what most of the top tier agencies are doing for themselves while at the same time offering an unfairly low royalty percentage to the producer.

Pond5 isn't perfect, but at least so far it has been a fair, open and honest agency. It would be great if producers would take some responsibility in protecting the market themselves by not under pricing each other. Everybody loses when that's the case. Pond5 is offering the opportunity for photographers and video producers to improve the microstock market conditions a bit. Let's give it a chance...

General Stock Discussion / Re: Pond5 Rating as Mid Tier
« on: November 07, 2012, 11:34 »
I have 25 videos priced between 10$ and 30$ and almost 200 images at 4.5$.

So far I've sold 7 videos and I've been contributing since march 2012.

This is the reason microstock is in a sustained race to the bottom. Pond5 offers a marketplace where contributors can set the price and also receive a %50 royalty. Yet we have people constantly setting their price below the site average in order to undercut fellow contributors rather than compete on quality!

66
Yes I'm also having similar issues. It seems their upload process is very slow and sloppy these days. Unfortunately that doesn't bode well for the future of this low earner site.

Finally some good news and from a decent agency as well. Set your own price and... best of all, 50 percent royalty!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Photocase?
« on: June 01, 2012, 15:49 »
Thanks to all for the responses on this query.
By selectively uploading photos I've been reasonably successful getting stuff accepted...so far anyway. We'll see what happens down the road. What attracts me is that they are at least trying to address a particular niche in the market. Perhaps other niche agencies will start to develop and prove to be a better option for buyers and sellers than the massive libraries of general stock. I figure it's worth a try.

General Stock Discussion / Photocase?
« on: May 30, 2012, 14:32 »
Just started to upload some of my portfolio to Photocase. Seems a very well designed site and concentrates on offering images other than the cliche commercial type. But...is anyone having reasonable sales with them?

123RF / Re: 123rf video prices and commissions
« on: December 17, 2011, 12:05 »
I also asked about this here and on their blog. Never did get a direct response. Someone messaged me that they got a reply from 123rf and received the following info about prices and rates.

1080HD - 65 creds
720HD - 55 creds
480SD - 40 creds
240WD - 15 creds

same 50% cut for us as photos......

This of course is unconfirmed. I submitted a small test batch about a week ago, still in pending and no further news to be had, so I'm waiting till they get their act together before sending anymore!

« on: December 09, 2011, 12:17 »
I was also looking for that information and even uploaded a few clips just to see what their process was like. I've asked about the rate question on their blog and have still not received a reply or noticed any information posted regarding the future price of clips or the royalty rate. It seems rather odd that they are requesting video uploads without first announcing the deal. Is this just another example of agency arrogance or what?

Crestock.com / Re: Crestock is ALIVE!
« on: November 09, 2011, 18:25 »
I never contributed to Crestock (not even prior to exclusivity in 2008), but if Masterfile has any reasonable sales traffic, this might make putting my portfolio there an interesting possibility.

Does anyone have any knowledge of Masterfile and an opinion of how likely this is to revive the moribund Crestock?
Masterfile is a very good RM site. I was a contributor to their library for many years as exclusive and can honestly say they were always upfront and treated their artists very well! In my opinion, because of their honest business ethics and focus on "quality" (for lack of a better word), I'm pretty sure Crestock will gradually rise in profitability for artists. Of course we would all prefer a higher royalty percentage than what is being offered.

Envato / Re: Photodune, Thoughts?
« on: November 09, 2011, 18:08 »
When using ftp you have to make sure you drop it in the "photo" folder or they won't be processed as a batch when importing on the PhotoDune site. Made that mistake myself and found it easier to delete and start over. Luckily I discovered that wrinkle in the process with a small batch. :-/
