General Stock Discussion / Is it worth it?
« on: March 10, 2015, 17:02 »
Hi guys, I have not been on here in a long time. Also, I have not submitted to microstock in a very long time. Microstock started my career as a photographer. Now I have a photography studio and a part time employee. We are doing mostly wedding photography but recently started to work in other areas of photography too. Despite the lack of uploading I still earn a chunk of money every month from microstock. I am quite surprised actually how well it is still going.

So my question is, is it still worth submitting? Do you still get a reasonable amount of downloads from new images?
There used to be a trick to get your new images to the front at SS, when customers searching for the newest images. It went like this: You uploaded one image. Shortly before this image got reviewed, you submitted the rest of the batch. Is that still working?

Thanks!

Adobe Stock / New Fotolia Subscription?

Among my normal Subscription downloads I got an XL- Premium subscription download at the price of 2.3 Credits. Anyone else experienced that? Is there a new subscription offer?

General Stock Discussion / Which agency has the best search
« on: August 17, 2010, 12:04 »
Try to be unbiased.
Do not consider the price or if you like or dislike the agency but only the search result.
Do consider the quality of results and the time until you will find the relevant images.

Adobe Stock / Premium Subscription
« on: July 07, 2009, 04:27 »
I just received a Fotolia newsletter from Fotolia Germany  that they will introduce Premium subscription.
That means buyers can download high res files, vector images and videos with this subscription.

For high res images the royalty will be:

White        0.35 Credits
Bronze        0.36 Credits
Silver        0.37 Credits
Gold                0.38 Credits
Emerald        0.39 Credits
Sapphire        0.40 Credits
Rubis         0.41 Credits
Diamond        0.42 Credits

For vector images 3x and videos 10x this royalty.

What do you think?

Looking at my portfolio sorted by "Most popular" at Shutterstock many of my newest uploads show up on the last page. So they have essentially a hard time to be found. There was no download surge of the new images as usual after I uploaded them. Anyone experience the same?

General Stock Discussion / Linking of Image Collections
« on: May 15, 2009, 06:50 »
All this talk about a our own microstock agency gave me an idea. Since I know quite a few users have a place where they sell and market their images on their own, why not link to each others image collections?

This is one of the easiest way of helping each other out without much effort and costs.

The way I envisioned it and already started it:

Submit a link with a specialized collection of images and I will put it on my website on this page:
http://www.penguinphotos.net/gallery/8214963_BPrh7/

as I already did with Christian Wheatley's collections.

Now I can put up your link anyway, even if I do not get linked back, but if each one of us who gets linked has a Collection page as well, it should be of benefit for us all.

So what I am looking for to link from my website are specialized good quality collections. At least 5 or 6 minimum images in a collection.
The collection should be from a site where you market and sell on your own.

Ideally it would be, that buyers can search by alphabetical order for collections they are interested in.

Thoughts suggestions and links are welcome :-)

Dreamstime.com / Duplicates will be removed
« on: May 08, 2009, 03:51 »
Quote from Achilles from the Dreamstime Forums

"There are many contributors who knowingly or unknowingly have submitted duplicates of their images. Duplicate=100% identical content.
There are thousands of files cluttering our searches, affecting the customers experience and decreasing the sales potential for that content (dilluting sales required for higher levels). Sometimes we found 4-5 versions of the same file.

Starting tomorrow we'll begin to remove the duplicates, triplicates, quadruplicates etc. Only one version will stay, the oldest one. Or the one with most downloads, if there is one.

The bad news: they are not just removed but will count towards the approval ratio as refused files. If the file was keymastered, no refund is given. If the file received the upload bonus for full exclusives, the bonus will be removed from your earnings.

The good news: we will transfer the sales towards the file that is kept online. Comments, collection and lightbox placement will be transferred too.

If you don't want your AR to be affected, you can search for the files and disable the duplicates yourself. You will lose the sales transfer though and the file that is kept will sell at a lower price.

This is just a first step to clean the database. We can say that we're a mature agency now so we should act accordingly."

New best match is live. Seems to be the best search by far now within microstock. If only the slider will function right. Am looking forward how sales will turn out.

Adobe Stock / Fotolia changes to Exclusivity and other News
« on: February 18, 2009, 09:30 »
Just got an e-mail from Fotolia Germany. They announced some changes:
One was I believed mentioned here before. The option to give your images away for free which have not sold int 24 month

Others are:

- Medium size price will go up to 4 credits
- our commission goes down by 3%
- new exclusivity model (photographers exclusivity like istock)
- commission from exclusive images will in future be the same as nonexclusive images, if the whole portfolio is not exclusive.

Off Topic / File sharing sites
« on: February 13, 2009, 11:58 »
I am looking for a credible, not to expensive file sharing service where I can upload up to several hundred MB files. What do you use, what can you recommend? Currently I use Rapidshare, its fine, but I would rather have something like a real account. Like with smugmug, where I can sent customers links to whole galleries. The problem with smugmug is its file limits and they just make JPG files available for downloads. Is there a good alternative to Rapidshare?

General Stock Discussion / Selling Photos Yourself
« on: November 14, 2008, 14:05 »
A little less than a year ago I started to use smugmug for wedding photography mainly but also to try out to sell my stock photos on my own. However I never really put much effort in my smugmug site until 1 month ago. I started to invest more time in upgrading the smugmug site, put some more images on it and linked it from my homepage. I also started to do a little advertisment with google adwords. But I do not spent a lot right now on advertism. I still need to update the galleries and have not yet put so many images online.

But now within 1 month I received sales worth ~ $ 50. Just today I had a $30 Sale netting me ~ $25 (Smugmug takes 15%). I am now thinking to focus on marketing the smugmug site.

I just wanted to share my experience with this and am kind of excited to market my own images.

Is anyone else doing this and has some tips?

Here is the site:

Dreamstime.com / Royalty/download at Dreamstime
« on: September 08, 2008, 01:57 »
I just checked my royalty/download statistic at DT and while in general the trend is positive, this month is surprisingly low especially since we just had an price increase at DT. Maybe more are switching to subscription because of the price increase for pay per download but not for subscription? But maybe it is to early to tell for this month, but what is your experience?

Here are my stats:

Since we are all so excited about Yay Micros Upload system  ;), I am interested if it really has the best upload system judged by contributors, or is it another agency which has a better upload system.

Shutterstock.com / Shutterstock pricing
« on: May 20, 2008, 03:30 »
I would be interested to get the prices of shutterstock in $.
Currently, when I visit http://www.shutterstock.com/subscribe.mhtml
I will get the prices in Euro.
If someone can make a screenshot, I would be really happy.

BTW 1 day and one week subscription is not anymore available in the Euro zone.

Computer Hardware / Need Computer Advice
« on: May 18, 2008, 08:58 »
My old PC is a little slow, especially when using lightroom.
It also crashes a few times a day, I guess, because it is getting to hot and issues with the connection to the hard drives/ and or the old motherboard.
So I am thinking of getting a new PC.

There seems to be a good offer right now here in Germany at a store for the Acer Aspire M5620
Prozessor        Intel Core2 Quad Prozessor Q6600 (2,4 GHz), 8 MB Cache und 1066 MHz FSB
   Ram        3 GB DDR
   Hard drive      500 GB S-ATA
   16x Multinorm Double-Layer DVD-drive
Grafik       NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT  256 MB
Sound       High-Definition Audio mit 7.1 channel support
It comes with Vista Home Premium
for under 600 Euro.

Is it a good deal? Would you recommend it if you use your computer mainly for working with Photoshop and Lightroom?
Would you get something different for the task?
Thanks.

Off Topic / Smugmug
« on: April 02, 2008, 14:00 »
I just wanted to show off my smugmug account :) :

http://freezingpictures.smugmug.com/

I trying out a pro account and probably will go with it. I am starting to belief that this will be a good alternative to send customers to, if they want to buy images from me. You can set your own price and receive 85% royalty.
Does anybody here has some experience with it?

Smugmug really seems to be a convenient tool. I just put images of a wedding I shoot on there as well and the bride and groom really seem to like it. In this way they can show their relatives and friends their images.

BTW it seems Smugmug is working on implementing something so it can work as a stock agency. But no one knows when this will happen.

Shutterstock.com / Shutterstock One-Day Subscription
« on: March 21, 2008, 07:44 »
Take a look over here: http://www.shutterstock.com/subscribe.mhtml

You can subscribe for one day which is new, download 25 images and pay 29 Euros. 29 Euros are currently $ 44.95.
That means the customer has to pay $1.80/ image. I as a photographer if I am over the $500 mark receive $0.30.
That is ~16,7% commission!! Even lower than IS.

So does that mean we are looking forward to a huge raise in May?

I just calculated for the cheapest/image subscription:
1 year = 2049 Euro= $3175 = 25X365 images
If the user uses it fully that means ~ he pays about 35 cents/image, which seems fair to me if the photographer receives 30 cents :-)
But of course the customer most likely will use it on weekends and holidays as well as on some days he might just forget to download the 25 images. I would be very interested in the real commission a photographer receives.

Panthermedia, the most successful German stockagency I know of went international today. Panthermedia is quite a good earner for me this and last month and this month definately in the top 5. But sometimes they have slow months.

General - Stock Video / General advice needed on video clips
« on: December 31, 2007, 06:22 »
Hi, I need some advice for viedo clips. Someone I know of has plenty of video clips and wants to know where to sell them. Personaly I know of shutterstock, istockphoto and now stockxpert. Are there other places, where you can sell them?

He has them in a really high resolution. Like one clip would be hundreds of MBytes. Is there another solution to uploading like can you send them DVDs instead?

Thanks!!
