Photoshop Discussion / Whats wrong with my photoshop?
« on: October 06, 2007, 06:34 »
My Photoshop Elements 2.0 shows pictures with a stronger red tone than when I look at my pictures in Irfanview, windows slideshow and on the microstock agencies. Does anybody know what is wrong with my photoshop?

General Stock Discussion / $/image/month
« on: September 03, 2007, 03:52 »
Ok here is a new poll. I thought it would be interesting how much the average microstocker would make /image/month. I have no idea, only that it is assumed that the actual number should be between $1-$2, so I made the range pretty wide.

Here is the way you calculate it: Go to for example Istock, look at your numbers and divide the income of August by the number of your images. Example: $200 income in August, your portfolio there: 100 images. $200/ 100 = $2. You do the same for the other agencies. (We should limit it to the Big 6). Lets assume you have 2$ for IS and $0.25 at DT.
Then you calculate them together: $2+$0.25=$2.25. So your average $/image/month would be $2.25 if you have images only at DT and IS. Do not hesitate to take part, because you think you are well below the average or above. It will help us to see where we are, if we are doing well or if we should improve.

Thanks!

Alamy.com / Alamy Questions
« on: August 31, 2007, 11:28 »
I have just been accepted by Alamy. I do have a few questions:

1. Can someone tell what you can expect to make in the average on alamy in $/month per images.
(I guess for most of us it is $1-$2 per month /image on microstock.)

2. What is the percentage of images from your portfolio at Alamy you can expect to have a download?

3. Is it wiser to sell an image Royalty Free if you do not sell it anywhere else or to sell is RM or licensed?

I am really curious about Alamy.
I know that the answers might differ a lot, but just to give me an idea.

Thanks!

Off Topic / Selling News Images
« on: August 28, 2007, 03:43 »
Did anyone has experience in selling news images? I might be able to be on a real big event which will be probably in all big news papers arround the world. I plan to take my camera with me :) But however I am not sure yet where to sell those gigabytes of images I hopefully will shoot.
I need to get akkredited as a press photographer. I can go there without being it, but the akkreditation would open a few more doors.
There are two possible ways:
1. a letter of confirmation signed by the chief editor
2. a copy of a valid press card

I do not know yet how to get one of these except one of you guys is by coincidence a chief editor and needs images. I do not want to do the deal with the Shutterstock press pass, because of the exclusivity. Any other ideas?

Oh and for those who are interested and are by accident in Frankfurt, Germany. It is the IAA. I think the biggest  international motor show. www.iaa.de.

iStockPhoto.com / What is the procedure?
« on: August 17, 2007, 02:59 »
I had now a few times requests via sitemail on IS about my images, if they are available in a bigger size or recently, if I can add something to the image. Now for the first time it seems like I do have what the custumer requests. What do you guys do then? Do you charge them? If yes how? Paypal, is it legal from IS position? Thanks!

Stockxpert apparently will offer subscription service and footage soon. I would be interesting what prices they would have. Maybe Steve-oh can enlighten as  :), as well as when StockXpert actually will offer this services.

Off Topic / Photography Course
« on: July 17, 2007, 13:58 »
I want to ask, if anyone knows a good distance learning photography course. I really do not want to go to college or university for this, but do it from home. New York Institute of Photography was mentioned in one blog at Dreamstime, but it does not seems really challenging, what I heard in other forums. Are there good courses for those who never took a course or class in photography but actually have done a lot of photography as we microstock photographers?
What is the best way to improve your skills?
Is going through a book better than takeing a course in our case?
Maybe someone also can recommend some good selfstudy books, for people who are a bit more serious in photography then the normal hobby photographer.

Thank you!

Microstock News / Microstock news section on my website
« on: July 13, 2007, 10:17 »
I have started a website as probably some of you know. Recently I added a microstock news sections. I try to collect all microstock news and post a short summary and a link to the news. My question is, is this something a microstock photographer is looking for and would be valuable information? Would you look regularly at such a page?
Is it worth the work. If no one cares about such information I probably would stop posting news on there..and focus more on photography again  :)
Here is the link: www.freezingpictures.com/news

Yes I know there might be still some spelling mistakes..

Off Topic / Any tips for shooting a wedding?
« on: July 07, 2007, 03:54 »
Probably I am going to shoot a wedding this August and tomorrow we will have a test shooting. Since I never have done this I would like to ask if you guys have any suggestions. I will just do the photos where the couple poses without any guests. For the ceremony and the reception they have someone else. The place most likely will be in a park. I will use my 30D and probably the 28-300 Tamron lense. If I do  not use the full range especially 200-300mm the quality should be ok. I will try out the flash too.

Dreamstime.com / Promotion website
« on: June 20, 2007, 02:34 »
A guy set up a promotion website, so if you have images on DT you can sign up and promote 8 images. I think it is a good idea. Here is the thread in the DT forum: http://www.dreamstime.com/thread_7716
and here his website: http://www.promotographer.com/

iStockPhoto.com / Istock poll about Exclusivity
« on: June 13, 2007, 11:57 »
I want to research Istock exclusivity, so I prepared two polls. I would be really happy, if you guys take part in it. I will make the results public after I got a decent amount of people who  took part in it. That might ease the decision of becoming exclusive or not. Thanx for filling out! Just a few questions and you do not have to write anything if you do not want to, its multiple choice :)

This one here is for photographers who are not exclusive with Istock: Click here

An this one is for photographers who are exclusive with Istockphoto: Click here

StockXpert.com / Promoting images
« on: May 18, 2007, 14:26 »
As we all know Stockxpert changed the search engine. What I found out, is that the popularity of the images is measured by how many views you get on your image. My idea is, well lets use that in the following way: we post thumbnails including a link of the image here. By clicking on it, we will have a look at the image at StockXpert and can rate it or comment it, if we want. That will make our images more popular if they deserve it. If you think, the image is not interesting or worth more publicity, just do not click on it. It definetely will help your image.
Maybe we should limit that for one image, because 1: it should be a good one 2: I do not know how many will take part in it.
Any objection?
Its like the section at StockXpert where you can promote your image :-)

Well here is my image:

Off Topic / Photography homepage
« on: May 18, 2007, 06:47 »
Lately I thought a lot about creating my own homepage. Since I have no clue how to do the programming I ask my brother to do it. However he has no time so I did some research. Somewhere I found a link directing me to www.googlepages.com. I was amazed. I did not know to do a homepage is so easy. I can recommend googlepages to everyone who has not his own photography website and does not know a lot about programming. Here it is, if you have any comments and suggestions feel free..
It is not finished, but I am working on it..

By the way googlepages is free.

Off Topic / Business idea, what to do?
« on: March 20, 2007, 06:26 »
For quite a while an idea is lingering in my head. It is a business idea about micro,- macrostock, which I think might work quite well and be profitable. It might be a really good idea. On the other hand I just do not know, it also may be a crappy idea.
I would like to start that business, but I know, I do not have enough knowledge, and certainly not enough time.
I would like that such a business would start, because at least I would profit from it as a customer, if it will work.
So if there is no possibility to sell such an business idea or to get a certain percentage from the profit, I would post that idea in this forum, asking those who have knowledge and resources, to put that idea into practice.
So does anyone has suggestion what I should do?

Off Topic / Buying images to sell them
« on: February 03, 2007, 05:35 »
If you buy an exclusive license of a photo and than sell it again, what would you think of that. can you do it, or ist it morally wrong?
I just discovered one image on fotolia which has already 38 dls and the exclusive license is only 100$. Its just a thought..
Maybe one should just contact the Photographer to increase his price.

Cameras / Lenses / Which Lens
« on: January 29, 2007, 12:36 »
Maybe someone has an advice. I am considering to buy a new lens for my Canon Eos D60 in the near future ( depends on the image sales) What do you consider the best lens to get, if you want good quality for a good price, lets say arround 400 uro.
I do not care so much if it is a 50mm, or 28-80 or 100-300. Right now I would prefer a lens where I know that I will have a good focus/good quality pictures.
The thing is, I have a tamron lens with a range from 28-300. Its a nice range, but the quality is lacking.
Any advice?

iStockPhoto.com / The neglected images
« on: January 25, 2007, 06:03 »
Hi, now with all the Creative Networking going on IS in the last day, I got an idea. Usually most of us have images which are great, often much better than those with lots of dls, but themselves have no dls and almost not a lot of views. Often the reason is, that these images just get buried under thousends of other images, and the people who are searching for these images have allmost no chance of finding them. I think that is one reason why istock came up with the rating. However if people do not see this images how should they get good ratings. So the thought came to my mind, that we post an image we think is totally neglected. And the people of this forum can decide if they want to rate it on Istock. What do you think of this?
It would also be nice to know how that will increase the dls. So people who will post an image should give feedback how well it sold after the rating.
Who wants to be the first? :)

Panthermedia.net / Panthermedia.net for the German speakers
« on: January 19, 2007, 06:12 »
I am sad this site is only in German. www.panthermedia.net is the first Stockphotography site I submitted to.
I never really had dls there till end of 2005, beginning of 2006. But somehow for whatever reason, the sales started to come.
The lowest price/ image is 4,90 Euro for a Royalty-Free License, the highest is 239,90 for a Merchandising License. And you get 50%.
So if you have a dl, you are happy :)
And within the last 8 days I had 3 dls. The total income was 44,85 Euro.
That is one reason I am posting. Maybe there are some German speakers who are interested in this site.
But I have to say, that there were no sales in the two month before these sales. My income totalling is now 211 Euro with 12 sales, mostly sales within the last year together with the three sales in the last days this year.  I have 90 images online.
They have FTP, and they also have a good acceptance ratio.
They are doing a lot of marketing and are working together with many different companies.
Well and then I just discovered they have a referral link  ::)
http://www.panthermedia.net/?aff=3733
Is there anyone else who has experience with this site?
