Hmm, thats weired. I noticed Bigstock got more picky, but still I got about 50% approved today and that with old 3MP pictures. Probably it depends wich reviewer you get. They in general seem to be really friendly. But I guess I will stop submitting there until the dls will increase. They also didn't accepted my bestseller, which was accepted @ss,is,dt.

And if you have a lot of lower quality photos as I have, then you need around 2700 Photos on at least 3 different sites (DT, SS, FT) to make 10000 a year :-) In the average I have 175 Photos on there, so you can calculate how much I make a month. Recently I started on FP,BS,IS, but they do not really count right now, this month arround 10$ all together.

It seems as Fotolia is grwoing the fastest, On March 28th approximately 210 000 difference, on April 13th 182 000 difference. That means they come 28 000 Images closer in half a month, 56 000 in a month. That is about 1860 a day. That means in approximately 98 days they have about the same amount of Images.

Lets do the same calculation for SS vs IS. SS comes closer with approximately 210 images a day. That means SS needs about 192 days..

I just got Canon 5D

Wow the 5D, so whats your impression from it? I've got the D60, quite a bit old, but it has the same sensor as the 10D, so I guess there is not much difference in quality. However a 5D, that really sounds great. That would be one I would like to have, but I cannot afford it. But as mentioned before, the lenses are so important. I just discover that with my Tamron 28-300 lens. Great range, but not the quality I wish it would have..

Hey, you know what, you can upload photos twice, with different resultions and set your price. A great thing. I have several photos with different resoution and you can make them cheaper then on any other photosite, but also expensive for the high resolution. I think it is amazing how much freedom you have there. For the photographer the best site if you would have more customers over there. But I guess for its age the site is doing quite well. I hope it will improve.

I really like featurepics, I have no sales yet, since I am uploaded only 3 days ago, but the pricing ist great! And it is much faster then even Shutterstock, through the search for the categories. I would prefer it much over the other websites, if the sales starts to come.

This week the first time Fotolia has the most income for me. It seems to be a steady increase of views on the pictures and of downloads. But probably thats just a real good week for me on fotolia, I guess in the average dt and ss will have more income. But fotolia is coming..

My guess is, that Fotolia too will sooner or later have more images than Istockphoto. They really gained ground the last 3 months.

« on: March 21, 2006, 18:19 »

Well, I was very surprised today. I got 3 sales within a couple of hours. One was a picture of a kids drawing with crayons and the other two were food shots.

Mark

I am surprised too. I have 4 sales, but together with yesterday, and that is including my second extended license  Photo (20$) that means I got 6.66$ out of it. Seems like fotolia becomes more and more profitable..
In the average now about every 12th Photo is extended license. However that means not much, since I have not had that much sales on fotolia and even now only half of the Photos have extended licenses.

Yeah I ment, that on many sites you cannot see the downloads, as you mentioned shutterstock and 123..., Fotolia and some other less popular sites..

Hi Geopapas,

now I did not saw that as a personal attack, I am sorry if my answer seem to suggest that. Thankyou for your tips!
the problem is that you cannot look at the downloadnumbers on each page, which are for me really interesting.

Yes it is only a small sample, but certainly more information than we have now at least for some people.

Hmm yeah the keyword, you might be right. It would be interesting how much impact they have.. I really cannot tell, probably you are right. In my opinion one of my best photos is a gull flying over a smashed block of Ice in the Arctic. It was a lucky shot.I do not get much downloads for it. Is the reason the keywords that it has not much downloads?

Having a few people upload their information would not be a valid statistical study. There are thousands of photographers, and thousands of clients. The few stats they you might see will tell you how those specific photographers are doing, but not much else. As they say "mileage varies".

There are too many variables to why some photos sell and some don't.

For example:

- Each microstock site caters to different clients. Some microstocks take 2 MP, but some don't take less than 6 MP. Some want more shots for web sites, while others want shots for advertising clients.

- Some photographers try to "market" themselves. Some participate on forums to get their names known. Some have their own websites. Some photographers do absolutely nothing.

- Some photographers really "work" their photos. They try to use PhotoShop or PaintShopPro to squeeze the most out of a particular photo. Some just upload what comes out of the camera.

- Some photographers have a great eye for "stock" photos. Some don't.

So trying to compare yourself to another photographer is pretty useless (IMO). You might be able to get a "feel" for things, but beyond that I believe that you just need to take the plunge, put the time in, and find your own niche.

Dear Geopappas

I am not so much interested in how photographers are doing. And you are right, there are many variables why some photos sell and others not.

- Your point that all sites have different clients is true, but exactly that is interesting for statistical reasons. If we have 100 sample photos with different motives, we can see which motives sell the best on which page. Although certainly the statistic cannot be totally perfect, but we might see a trend

- Ok, some might market their name much better than others your are right, but I still think the most customers download a photo because they see it on microstock.

- Your point that they work the photo and make it as good as possible is not really a point against a valid statistic, because we can see that photo and see that it is a very good perfectionized photo. So there should be more downloads which motivate us to perfectionize our own photos.

- That some have a great eye for stock photos won't make the statistic invalid. We see the picture. It fits the market so it should have good downloads.

Some people might gain from that and get a little bit more feeling on which motives they concentrate. And especially on which site they should upload.

Ther are now several websites. How do I know which sites are worthy to upload? You might get some tips from other photographers. But it would be a really nice overview to see that in actual photos. For me that is one of the most intersting points. Otherwise from my side it is just curiousity and natural interest in these statistics. Maybe it might be helpful for some to get a little help in their feeling what to upload especially for people who just started. On some websites there are photos which really don't sell at all. Upload those too, and some new photographers get an idea what not to upload and what to upload.

But interest is the main factor. Since leaf asked I told him my suggestion. I personally would love it to have such a statistic and that would be one reason for me to visit this website more often. If there are more people out there who are interested in such a thing the website would be more attractive for them. I guess there are! Or am I totally on the wrong track?

Hi Leaf,

it would be really nice to have statistics in here.
For example sample photos from a portfolio where we can see how each one is doing on each selling website. That would be awsome! Additional with information which licenses are sold and how many downloads. And maybe a feature, where you can see the total income from all the sample Photos together on every website. Lets say 100 good sample photos with different motives. I think that would be really interesting for lots of Photographers and that certainly would attracted many photographers to join this community. It will make the descision more easy to know where to invest the time to upload or apply at photo agencies. What do you think about that idea?

General Stock Discussion / Re: slow reviews
« on: March 17, 2006, 12:44 »
Just for the people who are interested: I had 10 the same Pictures uploaded at Shuttersstock, Dreamstime and Fotolia. I uploaded them on Tuesday. On thursday I had them reviewed on Shutterstock. Today (Friday) they were reviewed at Dreamstime and Fotolia. Trough my general experience I thought Shutterstock would accept the least, because my experience taught me they were the most picky ones. I thought in addition trough my experience that Fotolia would accept the most, probably all of them and dreamstime would be quite picky too.

The surprising outcome was following:

Shutterstock: 7 accepted
Dreamstime: 10 accepted
Fotolia: 4 accepted.

(Maybe I should just stop thinking..)

The next surprising thing was that from the 4 Fotolia selected 2 were denied at Shutterstock. The reason for denial was at all of them due to technical problems at Shutterstock (blurry, lens flare and so on..) and Fotolia. However I am happy with that since Dreamstime and Shutterstock are my best income. Although I have the most Photos at Fotolia.

I think it is a great thing. I have some photos on a German Website, where they had it now a longer time. I sold one Photo twice and that was all together arround 45 Dollar! On dt,ss and fotolia I got for that not more than 3 $. But my other photos have not sold except for two on this German site. I am really happy about ss, because they have a fixed price and 20$ sounds really good. Lets see how that will work out. Do you have any information about Dreamstime, I thought I heard something about an extended license, but when I searched through the message board I could not find anything..

Shortly after I joined I had my best sells in November and December, and now March seems to be the worst month over all, but maybe thats just my image selection, since I have mainly pictures of Ice and Penguins and so on and the customers might long for warmer weather :-)

Hi, I have about 160 images on fotolia, and got about 10 $ the last two month.. But as I look at the statistics, each month slightly more people look at my images.
