General Stock Discussion / Re: November 2009 Earnings
« on: December 02, 2009, 13:22 »
Yeah DT is really not that great especially compared to IS and FT. SS is stable but I did not really upload for 3+ month.

Surprisingly the lack of uploading did not have a big effect on earnings for FT and IS.

IS pretty much like last month BME
FT BME by far, it even overtook IS for the first time.

New Sites - General / Re: Polylooks open in the UK
« on: November 12, 2009, 03:09 »
I was one of those whom they invited in the early days. For me there was no problem since I am German. They offered me as I understood them at the time to sent them my images on DVD and they would do all the uploading and everything. Turned out it was just the uploading and I still had to do some things on their website to be able to have them online. I finished some images for them, over a hundered of my better images.
No sale in months. For me it was so far a waste of my time. I was initially flattered by the agency that they even called me on the phone and was told about their big plans. Actually that person was a former employee of Getty and backed up with the mighty Telecom it made me think this would kind of gurantee sucess. But I was wrong. In fact I even get more views in a couple of hours at Fotolia than I have gotten in several month of beeing at polylooks.

StockXpert.com / Re: Bad things about to happen ...
« on: October 13, 2009, 02:15 »
Just tried a couple of searches on Photos.com Plus, to see how the search-order was working, and when I clicked on one of my own images ... this message popped up in bright red type;

Alert: This image will not be available to download or license after November 2.

Looks like the party might be over fairly soon after all. Oh well.

Photos.com says this:

Next month, the ultimate subscription will get even better: Were adding a new content source and will be adding fresh content daily. Expect over 1 million new images by the end of November.

While the current page says over 350,000 images. Maybe it's not all bad news? Where do you guess they will be getting 1 million new images to replace the over 350,000 images they now offer? IS isn't going to move best sellers from the profitable area into cheap downloads. Possibly from another partnership with a different site?

Considering that most of the Micro sites offer basically all the same images, it's like moving your money from one pocket to another. Nothing changes except where it comes from when you spend it.  ;D

Maybe for StockXpert it will mean attracting more customers there for better sales, not the 30c subs.

Why is everyone so negative all the time?

If they close StockXpert and mail me a final payment, that's fine. Same as LO and SV. How many people here are still feeling negative economic effects from SV or LO closing down? Do you really, really miss those two?  :D

Actually on Photos.com it says "Search over 2 million images". Maybe for new customers they limited the access to only 350,000.
I actually do not believe that the one million will come through other sources than from iS. There was a newsletter a long time ago which stated that istock already has a few hundered thousand images opted in for that plan. It was a pretty high number not so far away from that 1 million.

Oh and StockXpert is a far better earner than LO and SV combined.

Okies sorry, 4 years, 5D was announced in August 05 and went on sale later that year. I'm about to get the 5D M2 for myself this Xmas, mainly so I can use full frame with my 17-40mm L lens and for overall better quality. I used to have the 30D and my mum has the 20D. The difference going to 40D was quite substantial in terms of handling noise at higher ISO, larger LCD and sensor cleaning. A four year old camera, even with a full frame, in my books just doesn't stack up... I would never go back to sensor cleaning with my swab's, god that sucked....

Don't have to high of expectations of the sensor cleaning in the 5d Mark II. I have got it and I have got the dust as well  :D

80
I wouldn't bother personally with the 5D Mark1, we are talking over six year old technology here ....

Six years? On which planet? If you'd bought a 5D when it was first available it would still be less than 3 years old.

With microstock (as with most photography applications) the requirement is 'good enough' to pass the quality and size thresholds. In that regard the 5D will probably never become obsolete in that it already exceeds the quality requirement for all current uses of the images.
+1
5d MK I is a great camera, even the price for used 5d I's have gone slightly up since January, because the demand is so high. I would prefer that one any time over a crop sensor camera probably even over a 7d.

Nikon / Re: Nikons response to the Canon EOS 5D Mark II
« on: September 25, 2009, 01:49 »
I have a 5d MkII and I love it. The 21 MP are great, the low noise is great and of course Canon has an advantage in fast primes. A friend of mine bought the Nikon D700 and I tried it out a bit. I actually really like it. It is a great camera. The autofocus is awesome. It is so so much better then the one on my 5d. The autofocus is by far the biggest disadvantage Canon has. After I had the D700 in my hands the autofocus of my 5d felt like one of a cheap camera. Autofocus really seems to be a main issue for Canon. That is also what the guy in the shop told me where I went yesterday. Canon does not seem to be able to fix the issues they have with the cameras  :(

Computer Hardware / Re: Image storage options
« on: September 22, 2009, 07:27 »
I am mainly worried about my wedding photos. After a wedding they are either stored on the CF-Cards and one computer OR when I need the CF-Cards on two computers. When I am done with editing they get uploaded to Smugmug. Having them on one harddrive and Smugmug is save enough for me. I never had a failure with my harddrive and both smugmug and harddrive failing at once is pretty unlikely.
Smugmug is reasonable cheap and has unlimited storage. At the same time my smugmug account is also a backup for my clients. They can access their high res photos on smugmug as long as my account exists.

General Photography Discussion / Re: Breaking Even
« on: September 22, 2009, 02:55 »
I broke even I would say within 7-8 month, but I started very humbly with 600 Euro set of eqipment bought used by my former boss. As people already said you do not need to spent thousands of $ for microstock. You can start out with  $300 -400, buy a  used Canon 10D or 20d together with the 50 1.8 mm and you have all you need for the beginning. If you consider the time microstock is a waste of your time for probably 95% of all contributors   ::)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: My image to be on book cover: What to do?
« on: September 03, 2009, 07:16 »
Sincerely, if you have the image at RF microstock, it doesn't make sense to charge RM prices.

At last someone talking sense!

I've had requests like this on two occasions (out of 160K+ total sales). I say "Yes no problem, I'll email it to you". FOC.

If I've downsized the image it was almost certainly to either overcome a borderline technical issue or to improve the comp (and thereby sales) and I'll warn them of that. I won't do any post-processing at all, just pluck the original out and send it to them via YouSendIt. It maybe takes 10 minutes of my time and I'm happy to help a customer out. I do check that the image sold recently at the largest available size though!

On both occasions the customer was extremely grateful and I received a copy of the magazine or a photo of the exhibition display it ended up on. In your case I'd suggest a copy of the book __ I'm sure that would mean more to you than a few extra $'s.

Sometimes business isn't just about trying to exploit and maximise every opportunity to boost income. My own business isn't based on doing custom work for individual customers but instead on producing 'good enough' images at low cost and selling them in high volumes. An issue like this pops up about once every 18 months, takes a few minutes and really isn't worth charging for IMHO.

+1

If you totally make a new image for them, then yeah you could charge them quite a bit, but in this case I would just send them the image unless you really need the money..

87
It is in average probably similar as in the U.S. Edit: After thinking about it no, average should be lower for professionals and amateurs. If you are a top photographer you probably charge starting 2000-3000 Euros/wedding. If you are the top of the top you probably start at 4000 Euros ($ 6000).

But even if you have an average price of 10000 per wedding or let it be 15000 and you are doing a wedding every weekend of the year you are not even close to what Yuri makes. Anyway, yes for me it is more profitable to do weddings. I almost make the same amount in weddings since advertising started in July-August as I make with a microstock portfolio build up over almost 4 years.

Oh btw I actually know no one who is making 15000/wedding in Germany and I know quite a few wedding photographers.

88
I would be surprised if there would be anyone in all of Germany who makes as much as a wedding photographer as Yuri.
Anyway I agree, it is much harder to get good selling photos. My quality definately improved and I am convinced that the files I sent in this year are by far not taking off so well as they would 3 years ago.

89
I cannot complain:

The last 100 sales:
6 XXXL or XXL sales
31 XL or L sales

91
I would do it if they link to my personal site. Is that not also a perfect way for improving your Search Engine Ranking through all the links from the different Blogs you get?
Anyway you can forward my website to them, if you do not want to do the deal. I am sure I have some nice images for them :-)

Shutterstock.com / Re: SS tax from this month
« on: August 22, 2009, 01:51 »
It is sooo low that even if my country (Panama) had a treaty (it is in the works) I most certainly skip the paperwork, and all the hassles related to it.

There is actually almost no hassle to fill out the paper work, it took less than a minute.. Its all online at SS.

Off Topic / Re: Crazy Squirrel Crashes Family Photo
« on: August 17, 2009, 04:11 »
Great image! But I am curious, which camera focuses after you pressed the timer??

95
I just switched from 30d to 5d and would never use anything less than full frame anymore. Not only pixel quality is better, but you will also have a more shallow depth of field, which can be a nice effect if you take photos especially of people. Corner sharpness really can be an issue if you need the corners sharp. I had problems with corner sharpness even on the 24-70 L. But I could get them sharp with almost any prime I used, even the cheap 50mm 1.8. But if you take photos of people that should not be an issue.
I believe the most of canons Primes are good enough for full frame.

The screen on the old 5d is not really the best and I bet the autofocus on the Nikon is better, but for me the focus on the 5d is good enough (I have the Mark II version though).

Both cameras are more than enough for Alamy, but you still have to resize the images, before submitting.
But probably it is less hassle if you stay with Nikon since you already have Nikon equipment.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: What type of camera are you using?
« on: August 07, 2009, 02:29 »
I just got Canon 5D

Wow the 5D, so whats your impression from it? I've got the D60, quite a bit old, but it has the same sensor as the 10D, so I guess there is not much difference in quality. However a 5D, that really sounds great. That would be one I would like to have, but I cannot afford it. But as mentioned before, the lenses are so important. I just discover that with my Tamron 28-300 lens. Great range, but not the quality I wish it would have..

Hah, that was long ago   :D now I have a 5d Mk II with L lenses, such a difference  ;D I Would feel handicapped with a D60 and the old slow and soft tamron  ::)

Shutterstock.com / Re: Up surge in your SS On Demand sales?
« on: July 27, 2009, 03:06 »
For some reason my On Demand sales have spiked to over half of my sub sales this month. Anybody have the same "problem"?
Maybe new marketing there? Or just a bump in the road? I hope it keeps up.

Yes sir!! Not quite half, but certainly up significantly.  Also a nice bump in EL's. Nice to see a $28 sale instead of  pennies..  8)=tom

Same here an increased on Demand sales and lots of ELs this month, already three times as much as last month.

I just had my first Premium Subscription sale too: 0.35 for a vector illustration.  Now if the number of sales makes up for the low prices...  I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Thats weird, I though they give you 3 times as much for a vector illustration. ???
