SnapVillage.com / The worst thing about SnapVillage
« on: April 22, 2008, 23:53 »
SV can be criticized  for many thing, but most of them, I've learned to live with, and sales seem to be increasing anyway. There's one thing however, that I find so outright stupid, from a photographer's, a designer's as well as from SV's view, that I feel something should be done:

Medium resolution at SV is 1600x1200 pixels, which is around 2MP. Very small, and not enough for a good quality, full page print. Large resolution is 3000x2300 pixels, which is just under 7MP.

That means, that images from 6MP cameras, and there are lots of them about, some of them of very high quality, which would normally print very well full page (A4 format), are reduced to the measly 2MP size (or at least, that is how it looks to the customers).

An obvious result must be that designers fail to download images that may or may not be large enough, but since the designer can't know that, it's safer to go somewhere else. In the end, all involved lose. The photographer, because he loses a sale, SV likewise, and the designer, because he has to search further for a usable photo.

I tried to take this up with SV support around 6 months ago, but to me, it seemed like they didn't understand what I was saying. Does anybody else have thoughts around this?

SnapVillage.com / Ghostvillage?

Is it only me, or....?

Until February, I had very slow, but rather regular sales at SV. Not so anymore. In March, I haven't had a single sale, and even the number of views seem to slow down. This is one of the high seasons of the year, so I would believe that it should be the time for SV to get going as well. Have they forgotten where they've hidden the key?

Crestock.com / Emails of sold photos
« on: March 12, 2008, 23:27 »
Until recently, I received an email every time (like once per month) I had a sale at Crestock. However, when I checked my account there today (to see if it could be true that I had zero sales so far in March, just like in February), I actually had a couple of sales at the beginning of the month, but no emails.

Anybody with similar exprience?

Featurepics.com / The sweet thing about Featurepics...
« on: February 07, 2008, 20:27 »
... is that, although downloads don't appear as often as at other places, they pay well when they come. Like today, I sold a $7 photo, generating $4.90 for me. And to make it even better, it was a photo that was found "not stockworthy" at all other agencies.

Shutterstock.com / Among today's rejections
« on: January 20, 2008, 13:41 »
I've stopped  worrying about rejections at SS, but some of them are more funny than others. Here's one from today:

Reason:
Poor Lighting--Poor or uneven lighting, or shadows. White balance may be incorrect.

I have considered different ways of improving the lighting in the photo. Asking the sun to hide behind a cloud to give a cooler, more even light could be an alternative. I could also take my studio strobes up in balloons on each side of this yellow one, to get correct studio lighting and not the unreliable sunlight I've used for outdoor shots previously.

Since the WB "may be incorrect", painting the sky in the correct SS-blue, is probably also a good idea.

On the other hand: all of this might cost more than 30 cent, so I'm not sure if I'm going to do it   :D

iStockPhoto.com / Image sizes at iStock
« on: January 14, 2008, 20:11 »
Navigating around iStock isn't my favourite hobby, so I wonder if somebody knows:

What are the pixel sizes of the different image sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL) at iStock?

LuckyOliver.com / I made a sale at LO today
« on: October 09, 2007, 23:20 »
Another 30c added to my piggy-bank. It's not my best day at LO, far from it. There have even been days with sales of more than a dollar. With this latest sale though, LO is even comparable to IS, bringing the accumulated sales since February up to just 15% under my sales at IS. It must be said though, that in the case of IS, that was the sales for today only.

Oh well... tomorrow is another day...   ::)

iStockPhoto.com / A normal day at IS?
« on: October 01, 2007, 20:54 »
Available slots for upload: zero
Sales on 1 October: zero
Sales in September: lowest since January

I don't want  to sound grumpy, but something isn't working as it should here. Is it only me, or are others seeing a similar development?

What I'm also seeing, is that agencies such as DT, FT and StockXpert are closing in on IS from behind. The gap has become much, much smaller the last 4-5 months. Even BigStock, which has always been slow for me, is accelerating.

iStockPhoto.com / Down, down, down
« on: September 18, 2007, 19:59 »
Does anybody have an idea what is happening at iStock? I try to browse through their forums, but apart from the usual "you're doing a great job!" and "I'm proud to be associated with iStock", there isn't much to find out.

Fact is:
- upload limits are at the bottom level
- review times are longer than ever
- technical problems are coming and going on a weekly basis, and at the moment, the statistics aren't working
- my new photos aren't selling at all
- my total sales have been going down every month since May, and so far, September represent another significant dip

A year or so ago, iStock looked more or less invincible, and although I've always found their attitudes (and their commissions) somewhat lacking, their sheer size has made participating there rather obvious. Now, they look like an old communist regime: big, bulky and slow, and with decreasing impact on the outside world.

I guess nobody here have the inside information needed to tell what is really going on over there, but what about some qualified guesses? Any ideas?

Adobe Stock / Money at the speed of light
« on: June 29, 2007, 08:20 »
They must be doing something right at Fotolia these days. I requested a payment from them six or seven hours ago, and the money has already arrived in my Moneybookers account. That must be some kind of world record. At least it made me smile  ;D

36
While I like the layout and concept of LO a lot, after six months, my commissions there are lower than those at stockphotomedia ant featurepics, the other bottom-feeders among those I upload to. I suspect that even Crestock will make me a millionaire before I reach my first payout at LO.

Is it only me, or do others feel the same???

Adobe Stock / Not approved yet, but sold twice
« on: May 08, 2007, 00:11 »
This is a funny one: one of the images that I submitted to FT last week, and is still in the approval queue, sold once yesterday and again today, to two different customers. How is that possible? I can't even see the page for the photo, only the small thumbnail.

iStockPhoto.com / No "Last Download"
« on: March 07, 2007, 22:03 »
I can't sort "my uploads" after "Last Download". Does anyone else have that problem?

39
I've had a couple of those "too many like this already" rejects at StockXpert again, and I was asking myself as a designer if that's good or not.

When I download photos, I look for an agency that has lots of variations over the same theme. Choice is king, and as long as there's not too much keyword spamming, there simply can't be to much of a good thing. The fact that most of the micros have lots of second rate images dating back to their start-up period makes this even more important. If the old photos aren't removed, the only way to make them less visible is to drown them in lots of high quality stuff.

Interestingly, the two most successful agencies, SS and IS, have never rejected any of my photos because they have "too many" or "we are not looking for...". As long as the quality is good, most photos are accepted, also those that are a bit off-beat. A broad selection is probably as important as a deep one. Although I'm not searching for "Buddhist temple in Himalaya" every day, the agency who has it when I need it, gets my vote.

So, I don't buy images at StockXpert, but at DT, or at IS if I can't find it at DT.

StockXpert, are you listening?

StockXpert.com / Payments at StockXpert
« on: March 01, 2007, 18:52 »
Does anyone know how long time it takes to get paid at StockXpert? I requested payment to my Moneybookers account early Monday morning this week (26th), and got a message on my monitor that it would take 3 days, but so far no money   :-\

iStockPhoto.com / Somebody screwed up big time?
« on: February 28, 2007, 00:25 »
Whatever new, amazing feature IS planned to bless us with after the scheduled maintenance today, it was apparently a bit too much. The half hour has now grown into three and a half.

Hmmm... maybe I send them one of my screwdrivers  ::)

Site Related / Front page link at the bottom?
« on: February 26, 2007, 20:53 »
I mostly enter current thread from the front pages. When I've finished reading a thread, and if I don't want to post anything to that thread, it would be nice to have a link back to the front page at the bottom of each page, since some of these pages are rather long.

Is it possible? It would save at least me several seconds ever year that I'm not sure what to do with yet, but I'm sure I'll come up with something   8)

Dreamstime.com / Ooops... total revenue down
« on: February 26, 2007, 19:49 »
I sent a request for payout at DT yesterday. After doing so, the amount for "Total Revenue" was reduced to "Old Total Revenue minus Payment Request".

Have anybody else had the same experience? Will it be adjusted up again, or should I contact them?

New Sites - General / First sale at Paxxion
« on: February 26, 2007, 04:24 »
I just had my first sale at Paxxion. EUR 5.00 minus PayPal fee. Still it adds up to more than USD 6. It's impossible to say what the future brings on the basis of only one sale of course, but it does mean that they have at least one customer   :D

iStockPhoto.com / Release not found
« on: February 20, 2007, 20:20 »
Have anybody else experienced this:

I have three photos in the queue at IS that require a model release. The release was uploaded with each photo. Still, when the first photo was reviewed (or "inspected", as they call it, what a terrible word to use about creative work), the reviewer claimed there was no release.

So I re-uploaded the release, and to be on the safe side, I re-uploaded the release for the two others as well. Still, I've now had rejections for those two as well, for the same reason: no release.

To top it off, it has taken them ten days to review (or rather: not review) those images. I don't mind long review times, but when they end up rejecting the images for the wrong reason, it's rather annoying   :-\

StockXpert.com / Very, very sloooow
« on: February 15, 2007, 06:18 »
So far this month, I'm 80% above January for all agencies combined, in spite of no EL's and nothing else in particular. Just very healthy sales all over. But there's one exception: at StockXpert, I hardly have any sales at all this month ($3.50 so far). Not that I've had huge success there earlier, but it has been hovering between $10 and $20 each month since September last year, and my portfolio has increased a lot since then.

Has anybody else seen the same, or is it just me who need to pull myself together and upload some really sensational images.

LuckyOliver.com / Model release at LO
« on: February 08, 2007, 09:07 »
I uploaded a couple of images that need a model release to LO, but I can't find anywhere to upload the release. Does anyone else have a clue?
