awesome, congrats!
still waiting for that first sale, while uploading and uploading, luckily their reviews are quick
how large is your portfolio after 1 year?

480... 500 from tomorrow, but most of them are uploaded the last 6 months. Hopefully, I'll reach 2-3,000 within the next 12 months   :)

In DT, you can copy categories and even keywords from another file.  They even show a list of the latest uploaded ones.  Or have they removed this facility? I haven't uploaded in a while.

Adelaide

It's still there. I've never understood why slow review times is a problem. Since my photos are going to stay with these agencies for years, I couldn't care less if the review take 4 days or 4 weeks, but maybe I'm just too relaxed   8)

Everyone keeps having 'good feeling' but everyone keeps getting disappointed.  What makes anyone think that a new startup can grab customers that a well established, working, and systematic site can't?

There are no well established microstock sites. They are all just a few years old, and within the next few years, anything can happen. We don't know who has money in the bank and who hasn't. One of the big 6 can go under as well as one of the upstarts.

Is it possible to open RM account like Alamy if you have some RF accounts open!?

I heard that they don't want anybody with RF accounts...

You've heard wrong. You can also sell RF as well as RM at Alamy, and obviously RF anywhere else. What you can not do, is sell images as RM at Alamy if they are sold as RF elsewhere, but that's standard procedure for all agencies.

Micros plus Alamy is a perfect combination. I mostly upload editorial RM to Alamy, but also some more or less unique RF photos.

Had my first sale at Alamy yesterday btw., after almost a year there. The sale was $524 and $336 to me after commission and fees, so it was worth the wait   :)

Try http://pentaxforums.com/ and http://photozone.de/

The Pentax 77mm f/1.8 Limited is one of the best portrait lenses made by any camera manufacturer, and clearly the most compact. Highly recommended.

What would you prefer? What would be the ideal royalty payment system in your book?

Without question, a payout-on-demand system is my preference. Your 45 day waiting period is unprecedented in this industry.

For what it's worth, I think your $10 minimum payout is too low - something around $30 to $50 is normal for low-volume sites such as SV.

Agree, and add Moneybookers while you're working on this. My money is still ending up in the big nothingness called PayPal   :(

They are falling for me as well. If the trend continues, this month will end lower than September 2007, while all the others increase, with a possible exception for SS. Their main competitors, IS and DT, are increasing a lot compared to last year.

SnapVillage.com / $50 at SV, do they exist?
« on: September 13, 2008, 09:28 »
Yes, they do actually. I had my first one today, on a Saturday, no less. But it says something about my sales there that one $50 sale ($15 commission) generated an instant BME, all by itself   :-\

I think some sites just run on their own now, like CanStockPhoto and Scanstock. Nothing new seems to be happening there, no improvements or even site look, and it seems that as long as their owner's earnings still pay for the server & etc fees, they will stay online.

I wonder however who are the buyers on these sites.  Haven't they found first the other sites with a bigger and maybe better choice of images?

Regards,
Adelaide

I don't know about CanStockPhoto, but Scanstock have a lot of newspaper and magazine customers in Norway (I see my photos appear in Norwegian newspapers with credit Scanstockphoto), probably due to two strong features:

- They accept editorial photos
- They have a lot of images from Scandinavia, Norway in particular, and accept photos from that area that are often rejected at the larger agencies

Niche markets work very well sometimes.

I had to stop uploading to SV a while ago, since I was making about $3 a month there. Still am, and haven't seen any signs of improvement. I wouldn't be surprised if SV went the way of LO soon.

Agree. I'm full of patience with people struggling to get from nowhere to success, but these guys had all the resources anybody could ask for, but still it's rather dysfunctional.

General Macrostock / Re: Photoshelter collection is closing
« on: September 11, 2008, 16:42 »
They never grasped the impact microstock has had on this industry, and were in for a long, uphill battle in a falling macrostock market. Their grossly inflated self-confidence at the launch a year ago also sent out all the wrong signals. An "all others are wrong, but we are right" attitude, only works on very rare occasions.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Sony A900 24.6mp camera
« on: September 10, 2008, 05:10 »
I consider buying it as a replacement for the MF system that I can't afford anyway. I would still keep my Nikon and Olympus gear for location shots and travel, at least for now. The A900, Zeiss 24-70 and one or two macros would probably solve most of my studio needs and give me lots and lots of resolution.

Just going to rob a bank or two first   :D

I heard a rumour once that the main reason for the existence of that agency was for Lonely Planet to get cheap, exclusive images for their travel handbooks.

« on: September 10, 2008, 01:04 »
No, those for Sony are AF. The pro line consists of 16-35mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, 85mm f/1.4 and 135mm f/1.8.

Apart from the 16-35mm which is new, the others are optically best within their segments and obviously designed with the 24MP sensor in mind.

Off Topic / Re: number of pixels going crazy but?

I see new quality requirements coming from the agencies faster than we can say "megapixel", not so much for more pixels as such, but for clarity and detail in general.

General Stock Discussion / Re: How this can be real?

Seems like SS is going down for a lot of people, and for me, DT and IS are catching up fast. There's also a thread about this at the SS forums, and those complaining aren't exactly newbies.

If SS has problems keeping the volume up, and with increased competition, that wouldn't surprise me, they may be in trouble. Reducing size is much tougher than growing, unless they have kept overhead costs at a bare minimum.

Low ISO samples look absolutely fabulous. And those Zeiss lenses are amazing. Can't think of a better camera for stock photography this side of MF.

Rumour has it that Nikon is already reducing the price of D700. They obviously anticipated this, which may be one of the reasons why they launched their camera so far ahead of Fotokina.

That's the dates they have informed us about for years, but while we used to get paid one of the first days of the month, they are stretching it as long as they can these days. It's a bit annoying, but the other major agencies aren't much better   :(

Anybody home at Crestock? I need to request payout as well, but I really need to do it with Moneybookers, since there's no way I can get money from PayPal where I live.

Dreamstime.com / No Moneybookers on DT
« on: September 05, 2008, 04:30 »
I just received an email from DT with the following text:

"Your request for payment has been refused and all earnings reverted back to your account.

Payments via MoneyBookers are temporarily disabled. Please use our alternate payment methods to post your payment request or wait until the Moneybookers' option is re-enabled."

Have any of you received this mail? I've mailed back to DT asking how long the problem will last.

I had BME at DT in August as well, and a rocket-start in September. Very happy with them for the time being. At the moment, they are my number two earner, ahead of IS with a solid margin.
