Lots of rejections?  Or weird reasons for the rejections?  I've had a few in the queue there lately, and not had anything odd..

StockXpert.com / Re: subscription impact on sales?
« on: October 24, 2007, 13:58 »
No subscription sales yet for me either, but overall I've seen a little lift in sales there.  (Although I've got a small portfolio, so its hard to judge really)

Also I see they are getting onto the approval backlog, I've just had some images approved that I uploaded on the 8th of October..

« on: October 24, 2007, 13:55 »
IMHO...  With SS you're better off to break your uploads into smaller batches it seems...  You'll not get the 'too much of the same' for batches, and small regular uploads have a dramatic effect on your sales. (Makes them better that is).

Cheers, Me.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon 400D or 40D?
« on: October 22, 2007, 02:50 »
40D - minimum grain  thru out the whole ISO range and a real size sensor.
(and a real live price i might ad - for me anyway)

"Real size sensor" ?  It's the same physical size as the 400D, 1.6x crop...  Or did I get a cheap one? :-)

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT running Google ads on image pages
« on: October 09, 2007, 13:39 »
This is a rather odd thing for DT to do...  I thought they were in the image game, not the advertising game?

And I just have to laugh jsnover...  "Gentlemen's site...."  ;D  It might be for the ladies as well !! ???

« on: October 07, 2007, 14:09 »
For what it's worth, most stores in New Zealand seem to have good stock of the 40D, even the department stores (appliances, furniture, electronics) have them on display, and in their junk mail.

StockXpert.com / Re: F*** YOU StockXpert
« on: October 06, 2007, 20:55 »
Yikes...

StockXpert is my lowest acceptance site, but I've never seen anything like that... (Although my total port. is 300, and I generally only upload 4-5 images at a time..)

Have you contacted them about it?

And I assume (as per Maco's comment) that some of these images are accepted elsewhere?

Off Topic / Re: Domain Names. What's yours and why?
« on: October 02, 2007, 07:25 »
Which one? :-).

http://www.trash.co.nz  <- I used to run a dial-up BBS called 'The Trashcan', and then when I started a web hosting business it seemed logical to use a similar name, and the same logo..

http://www.ohmark.co.nz <- Business name, for a business I sold in 2004 doing electronics design and development.

And finally: http://cpix.co.nz <- cpix is short and easy to remember, and fits on my jackets etc easily It sorta works as an acronym for a photography business as well.

There were quite a few others I had and subsequently dropped when I started to wind down my web  business about a year ago (Still supporting old customers, not taking on any new ones)

Wearing my I.S. managers hat for a mo..  (It's what I do for a day job)

Look at the debacle at FL, and the recent instability of I.S.  Your technical infrastructure would have to be spot on, with sound IT planning and system life cycle management in place.

Many startup 'E' businesses get very bad growing pains as their need for bandwidth and storage out-strips the original (sometimes simplistic) development methodologies and tools used.

Heck, I could knock up a 'stock' agency website in a few weeks, and have it work for the first 10,000 images, just fine.

Start hitting it with 5000 searches an hour across 300,000 images using anything like a smart search engine and you'll be talking multiple servers in an N-tier topology with clustered database servers, static content caching, load balanced queries...  This is not the stuff of the weekend IT crew, it requires proper consideration by a skilled IT team.

Once you crunch the numbers on bandwidth and storage you'd also probably find that not too many providers are going to be interested for less than a few $k a month, and you may find trouble finding one that will scale the package as you grow from startup to mega-stock site, meaning a large financial commitment up front for hosting, on the off chance you'll hit the top 10 list.

Cheers, Me.

2 days, 6 hours and 47 minutes :-)

What would be really sad for some of us would be if the stock sites kept this statistic...

Adobe Stock / Re: Can you reorder Fotolia keywords?
« on: September 11, 2007, 03:46 »
Unless things have been fixed in the last two weeks it doesn't appear to make any difference what order the keywords are in...

I played around with re-ordering some of mine then searching for the images using the top keywords, and it didn't work, I even left them for three or four days thinking the index process might be slow, but they still didn't come up in a search on the top keywords on that image..

I also had an image that appeared in one of my searches that didn't have the keywords in the top 7, so I think the 'top 7' thing is not correct either..

I'll check back there in another few weeks, and see if the search engine is fixed...

Photoshop Discussion / Re: Has anyone used Photomatix?
« on: September 07, 2007, 14:55 »
I've use photomatix a bit, and have some quite cool landscapes out of it, but I'll second the comments about artifacting and noise.  The results can be quite noisy, and sometimes have a very 'processed' look.

Looks fine for prints but I'm not sure you'd get many HDR images by reviewers that were created using tone mapping, rather than manually using layers in PS/Gimp.

The results out of photomatix really rely a lot on the input images.  Use Av mode, manual focus, a tripod, set white balance rather than auto, bracket three shots using the camera, mirror lockup if you have it, self timer..   Any trick that will ensure you get sharp input images, with no difference in focus or DOF between the frames.

I did an interior shot of a building for a commercial customer a while ago, used 12 exposures, and I did it using the 20D tethered with EOS Capture so I could adjust the settings between frames without touching the camera...

It's an interesting aspect of photography, but I'm not sure it will get you much stock..

Subtle ones like Maco's landscape will get through, but many HDR's look quite over processed IMHO, although I do like the look of some of them..

The other really interesting thing about HDR is that some things you look at and think 'Yeah, I'll HDR that' look crap on screen, and other scenes look great, it's often hard to pick in your mind exactly what the HDR result will look like until you try it, and sometimes the results are very other-worldly.

Just my 2c, as always. :-).

I think you missed the spot that said a max of 5 :)

I took my favorite 5 of yours.

OK, not a worry, I missed that bit.

I'll leave the banner in the others though, it'll increase exposure for the light box.

General - Top Sites / Re: August 2007 earnings breakdown
« on: September 03, 2007, 06:29 »
SS = 37.11%  (BME)
IS = 28.88%
DT = 18.26%
FL = 7.22%
StockXpert = 8.54%

And I've just joined Lucky Oliver, although not uploaded my first pics yet, had a bit of a busy month..

Also attached is my 'progress' graph.  From back in May 05 when I first uploaded to IS, although I joined and was approved in '04, I didn't upload anything till May 05...

You can see the 'Disambiguation' glitch in June 06 with IS, but it's starting to look better.  I've also noticed more activity in terms of views on some images on IS since I hit silver there, Dunno if that is real or just a co-incidence..

SS continues to grow in pace with my slow portfolio growth, as does DT and StockXpert (Sorta, think of a linear interpolation of those lines)  Interesting that FL has basically flat lined with the same growth in portfolio, although a slightly different mix of images due to variation in rejection/acceptance.

The next few months will be interesting for me in terms of stats....

I've in the past said that microstock is definitely a 'hobby' for me, and I'm a bit slack at uploading/shooting stock.  That was mainly because I had a very regular freelancing job..  That has just become an irregular freelancing job, due to some changes at the paper.  I've decided to invest the same time in micro as I was in the paper, and I've set some target portfolio sizes on all the sites, and I will be trying to see if I can match my freelance income with microstock by the end of the year.

Not sure if I'll do it as there isn't the same motivation to do microstock (Deadlines and screaming editors will get most people going), but I'm going to give it a shot.

Cheers, Me.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Red bull air race
« on: August 30, 2007, 08:48 »
What is your opinion on this event to take some stock pictures? Editorial maybe.
This weekend is near me (in Portugal)
If was you, what did you do?

Editorial would be fine, remember to get a program so you can caption them properly...

For non-editorial I imagine you'd have no chance of getting a property release from Red Bull !

well let's hope they start chewing that queue.

I've 350 images in it, meaning 7 days op uploads.  Still 8 days to go  ;D

350 images in the queue?  Yikes, I need to get off my butt. :-)

Just what I was planning to do as well ... putting up an entry on my blog page

Edited to add: finally got to it - wrote an entry.

We were talking about blog pages on IS I think, or at least I was...  I don't have any links to microstock from my normal website..  Some the other way though.

Ooo, blog page, quick thinking.. :-)
