Cameras / Lenses / Re: New canon camera rumors
« on: February 01, 2007, 03:04 »
I don't think microstock will have any influence on the cameras, if that's what you mean...  We're an awfully small chunk of the market.

And yes, the 1.6 crop cameras are here to stay.  Canon has invested in the EFS lenses, Nikon the DX lenses...

As to resolution, as the technology improves noise will go down, and density (resolution) will go up on 1.6x and FF cameras.  Look at the densities on some of the non-SLR small sensored cameras on the market currently.  Certainly they have high noise, but then so did the early dSLR's compared to what you can buy now...

FYI, Alien Bees no longer ship to anywhere outside the US, and don't do a 240V version at all.

BTW, I use Multiblitz Profilux 600's which are great, although possibly a bit pricy for a first set of lights...  (We're 240V here in NZ as well)

We're having a weird summer down here in NZ, a couple of days of 30 (C) heat, then rain, and 10 degrees for a day..

I went out this morning to cover a bike race which was running from the plains up into the southern alps..   Light drizzel and quite cold on the flat, got over the first pass in the mountains and I had to shed two layers of clothes, and put suncream on.

Oh, and yea, that serves you right for braggin! :-).

I get that sometimes as well, although not often across all the sites...

If you've got a small portfolio you get used to it after a while. :-)

The link on that page now goes to a 400D info page.. Might have been a typo by a web developer..  Certainly fuels the rumour mill though. :-)

I really can't see them putting weather sealing in a non '1' body, but I could be wrong...

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon 20D focus problems
« on: January 22, 2007, 07:00 »
Hi-ho,

You can check to see if the AF module is working...

If you put the camera in single-shot focus mode, and select manual focus on the lens with just the center point selected, then point the camera at something really high contrast that it can't fail to detect.

As you manually focus with the shutter button half depressed the center focus point LED's in the viewfinder should light up the box as you pass through the 'in focus' point for your high contrast edge/line/subject.

If that dosn't work you might have a dead AF censor, or the sub-mirror is dirty.  Try all of the AF points seperately (remember only the center one is a 'cross' sensor) and if it's just one or two of them, the dirty submirror might be your problem.  Not too sure what you could do about that though, but a goot camera store may be able to help.

If it's all the points, it's a service...

Cheers, Me.

:-)..

There's a few forum sites with jucy bits, but nothing that solid yet...

And for a bit of rumour mongering of my own, I was at a polo match on Sunday for the paper, and a chap there who is a full time equine photographer was saying he'd heard that the new Ds will be 25Mp, not the 22 that's commonly being suggested, and the new 1D will be 13Mp and still APC-H (1.3 crop).  He's just comeout from England, has CPS membership, and he's a full time pro which makes him more qualified to guess than me. :-).

Either way, what I know is that I really want a better camera for the sports work I do and if they do announce some new bodies in Feb at PMA, I wont be able to afford them any more than I can afford a 1DMkII now... :-).  (I really just want want better AF than the 20D, it's a right pain for fast sports)

Cheers, Me.

i have been there 2 years now.  No sales but I only have 50 some pictures there.

Perhaps it is time to give them another chance, but i haven't been to persuaded that i will be paid for my efforts.  On a side note however, they also have requests (from time to time) like photographers direct has.

In what sense do you not think you'll be paid?  That's an interesting statement....

I get my inspiration from trying to figure out how my camera works. Once I get it all down, I trade the camera for another one.

Errr, how do you say 'Gear head' :-)  * stones)

I did that when I first switched to digital, went through 4 cameras in 6 months.  The the 'next step' became very expensive, so I'm sticking with what I've got (Canon 20D+10D+L glass) till I pay off the finance on the last two lenses I  bought!  (Then a 1D me thinks... )

Oh, inspiration?  Just about anything.  I sometimes go out 'looking' for an image, just drive around and find a pretty tree/hill/sky.  Other times I go somewhere knowing what type of image I want, having seen something similar, or an idea from a dream/drunk state.  (Then wind up taking totally different photos because the light is wrong etc..)

For stock stuff I look at lots of magazines, trying to pick the 'stock' photos.  I pull out the pages, and stick them in a box under my desk.  Because I'm cronically disorganised I then ignore the box, and randomly shoot a few objects shots occasionally so I can get them rejected.  Most of my stock is stuff I shot for other reasons, and then thought might do OK as stock.

Cheers, Me.

Follow up on my comments back in october.   just for the record.....  so much for the nice email I got from getty back then when I applied....    here I sit January 12th,   haven't heard from them since.  You'd think since they have my pictures in their hands, they'd at least mail me back and say..   "your work sux, thanks anyway for wasting our time".    Glad I kept my hopes humble.        LOL

FYI, I applied to Getty here in NZ a while ago, took them over a month to say 'no thanks'.  I was specifically submitting sports/event work for their editorial area, not stock, but it did take ages to get rejected. :)

I made my light tent out of some PVC tube, and the 'tent' out of some white nylon fabric..  Total cost about $20NZ in bits from the hardware store, and I think $10NZ for the fabric..

I've used everything from 100W work lamps to strobes to light it,

Most of the time I use some 2nd hand Vivitar 285's I got of ebay for $30US each, into similarly cheap umbrellas..  as per:

Works really well..  as per:

Off Topic / Re: When did you start dabbling in Micro Stock?
« on: January 01, 2007, 06:27 »
Hurro,

I joined IS after reading about it on www.dpchallenge.com back in September 2004.  Not long after I switched to Digital as it happens, which was about August that year, give or take. I got a P&S digital in May 04, and sold all my 35mm flim gear in August 04 to pay the deposit on some lenses for my 20D.

I was quite sceptical of the Micro thing, and I was really busy anyway, so it wasn't until April 2005 that I uploaded anything for approval.

Since then I've joined SS, DT and FL.  I also submitted to 123rf for a while, but after very slow sales and odd rejections I gave up on there.

I've just done my initial submission at Stocxpert, and got an email asking for more sample images, problem is I can't remember what I submitted first time round! :-).  Ahhh well.

This is very part time for me, and I've only got a portfolio of around 300 images (Depending on which site you're talking about).  I keep on telling myself I should shoot more stock, but I never quite get around to it. :-).

The micros have paid about 25% of the finance payments on my studio lights though, so I'm not complaining.

Happy 2007. :-)

yay, er...  but I don't think I've ever uploaded that quickly, so dosn't really effect me.  :)

I assume this means they've finally got on top of the queue there?  Althoguth the home page still says 13000 odd in the queue..

Anyway, you folks have a good new years...

That's a really nice pic, wish I took it.  :)  I was looking at it a few minutes ago.

I didn't really think it was a big deal that it was not an IS exclusive member though...  I suspect the inspectors just pic a few nice ones during the week, then they vote around the lunch room table for the best one, or something equally silly.

Cheers, Me.

Merry Christmas to everyone! I hope everyone has nice holidays! It is a feast in remembrance of jeepers creepers who was born 2000 years ago to be our Lord and Savior!

Merry Xmas to you and your family as well..  Hope you had a good day, or are having a good day, depending on where you are relative to the date line. :-).

I don't use windows (linux) so I don't have the option of using their plugin tool..

I have it working on Red Hat. The Mac OS X version is a java app.

Arrrrr, that I didn't know that gem, I'll have to have a look at it, might ease some of the pain! :-)

(Debian etch here, btw..)

One at a time...

Yes their process is painful compared to some of the others, but at this stage Istock is my best earner, so I'll continue with it.  You'll get wildly different reports on which is the best site to submit to due to the huge variation in portfolios we all have.

Having said that, SS almost beat IS for earnings last month, which is probably a sign of the times..

I don't use windows (linux) so I don't have the option of using their plugin tool..

Arrr, that's more serious...  I have had that once or twice, but generally you try back in 20 minutes and it's all running again, so I just put it down to some sort of outage in IT land...
