DepositPhotos / Dramatic Surge in DP Sales
« on: November 12, 2012, 05:41 »
Until recently, sales on DP were occasional at best.  A few weeks ago, it went to multiple daily sales.  Anyone else experiencing the same?

Alamy.com / Re: Bombshell at Alamy !! New Search Options
« on: October 25, 2012, 07:50 »
Other than the slow payment process, I have no problems with Alamy.  And I find it interesting that when a photographer talks about "crap," "garbage," and "inferior quality," he's usually talking about "all of the images except mine."

I think it will take some time for buyers to realize the presence and availability of still photos on P5.  I've only had a few sales, but I'm optimistic, and I think eventually sales will pick up.

Not me.  I have enough to do without putting upper case where it belongs.  As long as it shows up in the search engine, I'm good.

"Pond5 grants Licensee a non-exclusive worldwide perpetual right to use, display, modify, publish and create Works for Distribution incorporating Licensed Content in any and all media an unlimited number of times."

Very broad terms...  creates a reason to set prices on the high side.
Thanks, I was tempted to sign up, but that basically means you are giving away copyright. They can alter the image and give it away for free to 7 billion people.

If you read the license agreement restrictions, you'll see that this is not the case.

I price mine at $15 for the largest size, and the system automatically prices the smaller sizes proportionately.

I shoot standard-definition, and most of my clips are about 15 seconds in length.  I price them at $29.  When I make the transition to high-def, I'll price them at $49.  I hope that gives you a frame of reference (bad pun intended because I'm humoursly challenged!)   :P

General Stock Discussion / Re: Rethinking stock photography
« on: October 06, 2012, 04:39 »
I like the idea and the concept, which puts you in direct competition with Pond5, who recently began accepting photos.  I determine the price of the largest file, and the system prices the smaller sizes proportionately.  I get 50%.  I've been selling video there for several years, which means they already have a presence and a customer base, which puts them well ahead of you.  I've stopped uploading to all sites except Pond5 and Alamy, and I'm working diligently to get my entire portfolio up on P5.  I think it could well be the turn-around of our race to the bottom.  I wouldn't want to be their competition because it would take a mammoth marketing effort and budget.  But if you're up to the challenge, I certainly wish you every success.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 Bins Malfunctioning
« on: October 02, 2012, 19:21 »
Some are working correctly; others aren't.  The ones that aren't appear to be ones that I created today, so I'm thinking that it may take a day or two to populate through the system.  Time will tell.

Pond5 / Pond5 Bins Malfunctioning
« on: October 02, 2012, 10:34 »
Is anyone else having problems with the bins on P5?  My bins aren't displaying all of the files I've put in them.  For example, one bin indicated that there were a total of 87 files in it, but it only displayed 25 of them.  Another bin indicates that it has 69 files, and it displays zero.  As in, "none" - not one of them.  I've tried it in I.E., Google Chrome, and Firefox, all with the same results.

Not for me.  I have a thousand files there, and a grand total of three sales.  One in November of last year, one in February of this year, and one in July (this year).  "Your mileage may vary."

I'm setting mine at $15 for the largest size, with the price of smaller sizes set proportionately by the system.

Until recently, they were strictly a video site, and I've been selling video there for years.  Now that they're selling photos, I'm uploading like there's no tomorrow.  When you go to your "uploads" page, there's a "type" button just below the search field.  If the type is video, that explains why you can't see your photos.  Change it to photos, and voila!

Actually, I find that attaching releases is easy, quick, and simple, even for attaching multiple releases for photos containing more than one person.

I've been using it for quite some time, and the only error message I get lately is that it won't download the update.  Maybe that's a good thing.

Alamy.com / My Biggest Sale so Far
« on: September 20, 2012, 06:30 »
I just had a RF image sell on Alamy for $250+, which is my biggest sale to date.  Of course, with the Alamy payout system, it will be some time next year before I actually get it, but it's money in the bank.   8)

Photo Critique / Re: poor lighting rejection

I concur.  If you're gonna shoot setups like this, you'll need a light tent of some sort to eliminate the shadows and get soft, even lighting.

HELP!  How does one go about attaching a MR to a photo when uploading?  I can't seem to find a way to upload a release or atach it.  Also, how do we make an image EDITORIAL?

Thanks for your help!!!

To attach a MR:
If you're looking at your uploads, click on the "releases" link located to the right of the "New Upload" button.  It will open a list of releases that you've uploaded so far, and you can click on the upload link located above and to the right of that list.

After your new release is uploaded, navigate back to the uploads page.  Click on the pull-down box below the list of your uploaded files.  (This pull-down list is labeled "actions:"

From the pull-down list, choose "Attach release," and choose your release from the pop-up list that will appear.

Choose the files to which you wish to attach the release by clicking the box beside each one.  Or if you want to attach the release to all files in your uploads list, click the box above or below the list to choose all of them.  A check mark will then appear beside all of the files in the list.

Click the "execute" button.  A pop-up window will appear indicating the progress of the operation.  After it's complete, you can close this window.

I don't know of any way to designate material as editorial.  I'm not even sure they accept it.

Perhaps, but I don't see it as risky.  I see it as just good business.  If I want to get a certain amount for my photos, it doesn't make sense for me to make them available for less on other sites.  Would you agree?

New Sites - General / Re: batch delete option in pond5?
« on: September 11, 2012, 13:45 »
There is a batch delete function.  After you navigate to your uploads and you're looking at the files you want to delete:

(1) Click the square directly above or below the individual file squares in order to select all of the files on the page.

(2) If you don't wish to delete all of the files listed, click in the square beside each file that you wish to delete.

(3) Click the drop-down box at the bottom of the page below the list and choose "Delete Rejected."  Don't worry about the fact that the files haven't been rejected by an inspector.

(4) Click the "execute" button.  You'll see a pop-up window indicating that the files are being deleted.  After the operation is completed, you can close this window.

If you wish to confirm that the files have been deleted, refresh the uploads page.  I've deleted files this way successfully on several occasions.

At What prices are most of you setting your Images?

Most images seem to be set either at 5$ or 10$.

What are your thoughts?

I think the market will support a price of $15 for the largest size, and smaller sizes priced proportionately, which the P5 system will do automatically.  That's what I'm pricing my material at, and I've stopped uploading to the other sites, which means my material will be sold at a reasonable and fair price (with a reasonable and fair commission) from now on because it will only be available on P5.

I had the same experience - erratic reviews, high rejections, long review times, etc.  And since they're a low earner, I decided that my time would be better spend elsewhere.  Your mileage may vary...  8)
