I had never heard of Potos.com until I read Dhanford's post, so I checked it out.  I don't understand why anyone would offer their material for so little money.  When prices go lower and lower, there comes a point at which it's no longer profitable for the artist to create material, and Photos.com has gone way beyond that point.  Perhaps if we could create material in the computer and take no longer than 30 seconds per item, it might be worth it.  Otherwise,...  :P  (Apologies for diverting the topic.)

Pond5 / Re: Pond 5 model release upload
« on: August 24, 2013, 05:37 »
It's been that way for quite a while... probably on their list of things to do.  I have no problem uploading 'em with FTP, though.  If you upload 'em into the release folder, it's easy to assign 'em to photographs, individually or in bulk.

My SS sales have declined over the summer.  Maybe it's my imagination, but it seems that the more I upload, the less I sell.  Whether it's a pattern that will continue or not remains to be seen.

I've noticed a decline in sales.  I normally exceed payout each month, but didn't make it in July.  I'm accustomed to seeing daily sales, but I've had three zero days and four sales total so far this month. :'(

I think it will be a while before I spend any more time on CS.  Had one sale in the month of July... made 30 cents.  Woohoo!   :P

Newbie Discussion / Re: Models and Money ?
« on: July 28, 2013, 05:38 »
Models and photographers have a rather unique symbiotic relationship.  Models need good photographs for their portfolios, and photographers need good models for theirs.  So very often it's a trade, known in the industry as TFP, which stands for "Time For Prints," and is a throwback to the days of film and physical prints.  Instead of the photographer paying the model with cash, we pay him/her in the form of free professional-quality photographs, which they can use in a portfolio or other forms of self promotion (but they cannot license the photograph for publication).  Since the advent of the digital age, we don't deal in physical prints, so you'll see "TF" quite a bit.  The "P" is absent.  In my case, I don't need more photos for my portfolio, so I look for beginning models who need professional photos, or experienced models who are updating or wanting to get a specific shot.  Instead of paying me, they get free photos in exchange for a signed model release.  The best modeling site, in my experience, is http://www.ModelMayhem.com.  If a model is truly exceptional, I'll offer a modest hourly rate in addition.  But beware:  for every model you find who is responsible enough to show up and mature enough to conduct himself/herself in a respectable manner, you'll go through dozens who aren't.  And be very patient with the beginners.  After all, we were beginners at some point.

Pond5 / Re: Disable/Delete an image in Pond5

I had the same experience recently, and here's what I discovered...  The site now defaults to the "new" site, wherein the delete function doesn't work.  At the top of the page, there's a link to the "old" site, in which the delete function does work.

I was using PSM until this change occurred.  Now I'm using Irfanview.

I think if it were me, I'd send them a scan of my driver's license to prove that I'm who I say I am, and ask them to have the person who filed the complaint to do the same.  I might even run a check on the license number, which anyone can do on my state's web site, and take a screen shot, in case the complainant photoshopped a DL.

Pond5 / Re: Photos Returned For Camera Information, why?
« on: July 17, 2013, 06:09 »
When I eat at a restaurant, I don't ask what brand of cookware the chef uses, because I don't care.

When I buy clothes, I don't ask what brand of sewing machine was used, because I don't care.

When I buy groceries, I don't ask what brand of farm equipment was used, because I don't care.

Why would anyone care what brand of camera I use???

If the camera takes good pictures, then the pots and pans cook great food, the sewing machines make great clothes, and the farm equipment grows great crops.   :o

Newbie Discussion / Re: Editorial Photography?
« on: July 13, 2013, 05:45 »
Editorial is a small part of what I do, but I'm giving some consideration to doing more.  Some editorial images would be for general use, i.e., travel articles, textbooks, etc.  An example would be my images of the mysterious Coral Castle in Miami - http://www.shutterstock.com/cat.mhtml?lang=en&search_source=search_form&version=llv1&anyorall=all&safesearch=1&searchterm=%22coral+castle%22&search_group=#id=92037167&src=_32w8FDsEK3wXMSBWAA6IA-1-1

Then there are the newsworthy images such as the images I took recently of the media circus in front of the courthouse in Sanford, Florida, covering the Zimmerman murder trial - http://depositphotos.com/28000583/stock-photo-Media-Circus-in-Sanford-Florida.html?id=28000583

DP inspectors give priority to editorial imagery because of its potential curren-news value, and they approved my images related to the Zimmerman trial in less than 24 hours.  They're still waiting in the que at SS.

After the trial is over and the media are feeding on something else somewhere else, the images will still be valuable because of their historical and documentary character.  I took similar images of the media circus during the Tracy Anthony trial, and they continue to sell.  Nothing to write home about, but it was worth the trouble to shoot.  It would not be worth it if I were from out of town and had to cover travel expenses.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5: What should we improve?
« on: July 13, 2013, 04:58 »
I don't understand why others view the upload system as cumbersome.  I think it's great!  Especially since the photo templates are working.  I customise an existing template or create a new one, then apply it to a batch of my uploads, and voila.  I can apply a model release to a batch as well, although when working with a batch, it would be nice to see the releases in alphabetical order, just as they appear when managing them.  Compared to the upload processes on other sites, I think the P5 system is the best.  There's no question that it's the fastest for me, and that's the most important criteria because time is money.   Perhaps others might benefit from spending some time with the upload tutorials to familiarize themselves with all of the features of the P5 upload system.  8)

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia reviwers are bots?
« on: July 09, 2013, 06:16 »
I stopped uploading to FT a long time ago.  The primary reason is because I'm tired of seeing my images sell XL for 27 cents.  Another reason is because the keywording process is laborious and cumbersome, and you can't edit after submitting.  Sales for me have been occasional at best.

64
I have some photos of a model, for whom I have a signed release, at a tourist attraction, for which I do not have a property release, so the photos will be uploaded as editorial.  I'm wondering if I should include the model release.

I downloaded the PSM update, and I'm unable to use it because it now requires lightroom registration, which I'm not interested in.  Is there another viable keywording/IPTC editing program that's free?

DepositPhotos / Can't View Unfinished Files
« on: June 14, 2013, 07:27 »
I uploaded files recently to DP, and the "Unfinished Files" indicator correctly indicates the number of files waiting to be "finished," but when I click on it, I get a blank area where the files should be, so I'm unable to "finish" them.  Anyone else having this problem?

I'll pass on the best advice I ever got.  It came from a wealthy man who told me, "What you should do is find the thing that ignites your passion.  It would be something that you'd pay someone to do if you had to.  Then do it so well that people will pay you good money to do it.  If you'll do that, you'll never work a day in your life."  So my advice to newcomers in the stock photography arena:  find a subject(s) that you're passionate about and shoot the livin' daylights out of it to become the best at it that you can possibly be.  Whatever ignites your passion, whether it's food, architecture, still-life, nature, or whatever... immerse yourself completely in it; give yourself a Ph.D. in it.  You'll find it rewarding on so many levels, one of which is financial.

When I clicked on the "Photographer Tutorial" link, This was on the site (emphasis mine):

"The basic requirements of a good photographer are creativity, efficiency, talent and patience. By contributing your photos to Depositphotos, you are actually presenting your creative work to millions of image buyers around the world. You can become a contributor easily if you follow the simple set of guidelines given in our tutorial."

So what's the connection with DP?

Do you have a marketing strategy that can capture a decent share of the market?

This one of mine sells almost daily; occasionally two or three times daily:

http://www.shutterstock.com/pic.mhtml?id=77165905

It has sold 212 times so far.  My next most popular file has sold 61 times:

http://www.shutterstock.com/pic.mhtml?id=77029147

But my third most popular file, sold 48 times to date, is the one I had the most fun doing:

« on: May 09, 2013, 05:39 »
I use the batch processing function to assign information that's common to several files (assigning model release, shooting date & location, etc.), but then I have to edit each file individually because their system reads the caption and description data but puts it in the wrong fields.  It doesn't read keywords at all.  The system definitely needs some attention, but it's been this way since I've been a contributor, so I've learned to live with it.

Alamy.com / Re: pics stuck in QC
« on: May 09, 2013, 05:27 »
My experience has been that if a batch has been in QC more than a couple of days, it failed, and any batches uploaded after that one will automatically fail.  I'm waiting the usual 30 days to receive the failure notice so I can upload others.

The only complaint I have about DP is the low prices.  I have the same complaint about other microstock sites, which is why I'm moving away from RF microstock and toward RM.  Low prices are great for buyers, of course, but I can no longer afford to produce images for this market.  As big as the demand for imagery is, the supply is even greater than the demand.  As long as that remains true, prices will continue to drop.  I predict that we'll see the day when sales won't be calculated for single images, but for groups of images.  Single-image returns will be below one cent.  The question is, then, how far we go before jumping ship.  How much will we tolerate?  Are we willing to sell a dozen images for ten cents?  Fifty images for 30 cents?  I bet some of us will.
