Perrush,

Nice images. I see you don't have Extended Licensing enabled. Not sure if this is on purpose. Some people simply miss this option, so I thought I'd point it out.

Lighting / Re: Speedlite 430EX or 580EX?
« on: August 31, 2007, 08:04 »
I just bought the 430EX and I kind of regret not buying the 580EX because of scalability issues.

Like Ron says, the 580EX has a port for a power pack. I think on the 430EX you have to hook it up through the battery bay.

If you can afford it, go with the 580EX.

Yeah. We're getting bombarded with submissions. Don't worry. We're going to be adding more reviewers shortly. Hiring and training takes a little bit of time.

Just a slight growing pain. That's all. :)

And of course you will have the option of the 40D if you are the honorable mention prize winner in the StockXpert annual contest:

Well, I have occasionally alluded to new programs that should help you guys earn more money through StockXpert. These are only a couple of them.

We're still working out the details and timing of these two programs (and the other ones), so I don't have much more info to report yet.

Hopefully, we will start rolling these out within the next couple months.

stokfoto, we are finding that those who prefer subscription services and those who pay per download tend to be different and have different needs. So it's not like we are trying to necessarily convert buyers from PPD to subscription, we're just trying to attract more buyers overall.

The main application reviewer was away for the past two weeks, so it has slowed down some. Don't worry. We're on it. :)

Karimala, you should contact support about this. Not sure what the issue may be.

Thanks!

Definitely not too late to the party. If your stuff does sell well and exclusivity becomes an option, I would encourage you to then try the other agencies first before making a decision.

Good luck!

Gizeh,

I think the reason people like the microstock model is because of the freedom it allows them. It makes it fun and easy, and contributors can do it on their own terms. Their success and knowledge develops organically. It's a very comfortable way for some people to do things. Exact opposite of the slave institution that "article" makes it out to be.

I also think blaming microstock is misguided. Microstock is a natural and inevitable offspring of the Internet and a digital workflow. Before you blame microstock contributors, you'd need to blame the Internet, digital cameras, and Photoshop.

These three factors have lowered the cost and burden of producing and selling certain types of images. They've also created greater opportunity for more people to participate!

159
Yikes! The "article" makes it seem as if microstock contributors are a bunch of clueless idiots who are forced into into this market and don't have a choice in the matter.

I thought about photography equipment, but a decent number of illustrators and digital artists doing 3D renderings enter as well.

I just thought iPods would be the most universally attractive. Plus they are easy to ship. :)

Notice I do have a B&H gift card as a third prize.

I probably will have to mix it up for future contests. If you guys have suggestions for different prizes in that price range, let me know.

Thanks!

While still good, the 30D uses old technology -- DIGIC II. I assume the 40D will have the DIGIC III processor?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Are you serious?
« on: July 16, 2007, 08:22 »
For an industry to survive, qualty has to be there.  The better microstock photographers will thrive. The casual hobbyist will eventually drop out, or if successful become more serious (like leaf said).

More and more macro photographers will enter microstock as they see the revenue potential, and I'm sure microstock will open the doors for some microstock photographers to go into macro stock. I think the door will swing both ways and create a situation where more, better photographers overall will be given the opportunity to participate in all models, and I think each model RF (micro v. macro), Rights Managed, etc. will further define themselves.

But it all comes down to competition, and the race is still in the early stages. Microstock simply gives many more people the opportunity to participate.

There are definitely enough microsites out there so the better microstock photographers, sooner or later will be discovered.

Then it comes down to the sites themselves competiting with each other. :)

Off Topic / Re: Any tips for shooting a wedding?
« on: July 09, 2007, 15:38 »
A few years ago wedding photojournalism was gaining a decent amount of attention in the media as a new style of wedding photography, and of course it was getting discredited harshly by many traditional wedding photographers as being exploitive and amateurish and hurting the integrity of the industry.

Sound familiar? :)

Are you doing formal portraits or more photojournalistic style?

Here's a link for some inspiration:

Wedding Photojournalist Association
http://www.wpja.com/for_the_photographer/

Make sure you know who the major players are-- family/friends (extended and immediate) and make sure you get them in your shots. I've noticed some wedding photographers tend to fixate on one or two people (for whatever reason) and sometimes those people are no  more than a guest of someone they had to invite.

Be creative. Take some details shots of the food, wedding cake, and any other items that catch your eye. Use high ISO and wide aperture with natural light for some shots.

I know it's a little gimmicky, but throw in a couple slow shutterspeed with flash shots. People seem to like those.

Not sure of the venue, but bounce flash might be appropriate too.

As for lenses, you will probably find yourself using wide angle for the reception and more of a mid telephoto for the ceremony.

Sorry for the disconnected thoughts, good luck! Shooting weddings and parties can be so much fun!

Cameras / Lenses / Re: I think I will buy a 30D
« on: July 06, 2007, 07:54 »
I just replaced my 300D a few weeks ago. Sensor was off a couple degrees and the processor kept freezing on me.

Decided to get a Rebel XT for $499.00 from B&H as a mid-term replacement until the 30D upgrade or the next generation Rebel gets spot metering. Couldn't justify the extra money for the XTi.

New Sites - General / Re: photos.com
« on: July 05, 2007, 20:00 »
Photos.com is not a micro site. It is owned by Jupiter, but it's a traditional subscription-based stock site.

170
Chan,

We don't have a content filter on StockXpert, so we have to be a bit more conservative with what we accept. We have a few projects in progress (which we will roll out in the coming months) that take precendence over a content filter right now. Maybe down the road we will implement one.

Thanks for your understanding!

Maybe they just should have bought Lucky Oliver!  ;D

Sorry Bryan. Had to say that.

Both right now. Question is will so much inconsistency be confusing for customers?

Price your own/pay-per-download/subscription with opt-out per image. As a customer I have no idea what I'm getting at what price under what model.

Perhaps this is a feeling out phase for Corbis, and they will solidify a model once they see what works and what doesn't?

173
Good point Hugh. What surprised me most about Kim Komando's 30-second report this morning is that she made the point to say that is not easy being accepted to these sites. And that the images are very high quality.

174
Greg,

Welcome! Yeah. Microstock is getting a lot of press these days. This morning WCBS Radio's Kim Komando did a 30-second report on microstock (without referring to it as microstock :)).

The others here have given you a great perspective on microstock, and I believe there is still a lot of growth for the industry. It is maturing quickly, but it still young and there is plenty of opportunity for success.

StockXpert.com / Re: First Annual Stockxpert Image Contest
« on: June 18, 2007, 14:45 »
Thanks, GeoPappas, for your input!

I'd like to give it a try this way first. We can always tack on a limit in future contests. While the normal upload rules dictate a certain level of quality that will be accepted, I still think there is room for overall quality to triumph over quanitity in this contest.
