Dreamstime.com / Weird sales pattern
« on: April 06, 2013, 07:37 »
I noticed that I have a sale every time I upload new files, even though the file that sales is not among the new files! That's really confusing.  Do you think there is a connection? Uploading more files gets you a better place in the search results or something? I don't think these are coincidences because my sales on this website are dreadful, I sell almost nothing, except when I upload a new batch. After that I always sell one of the older pictures  ( screw logic  :o  )

Congrats jcpjr! I just had a similar experience, but with an OD, not SOD unfortunately.

This business is this way- just when you want to give up you have great day in sales!

Will it work if I try to give up everyday?  :D

Hmm I see. Ok last question: what did you do about the keywords for the footage you uploaded? Do foreign contributors have to translate them in japanese or they are automatically translated? Because I can't see japanese people using english to search for stuff, especially on a japanese website.

I might give it a try then! Btw, are you submitting pictures as well?

I noticed that since April began, a few of my 5 months old pictures suddenly started selling. Those + my best pictures that sell everyday resulted in some of my best days ever on SS. I made in 4 days the money that I usually make in 2 weeks :D I wish the situation would stay like this.

Is there a non-Japanese version of PIXTA? Or did you translate with Chrome? (Or do you speak Japanese!??)

There's no English translation of the site, but they have a few English pages for contributors, like one that shows some statistics. My whole process of uploading was overseen by one of their reps. We communicated over email. Here's a page I found with their info: http://www.pixtastock.com/footage/

I can't make any promises. I've had 3 sales in three months with my best 30 clips (mostly time lapses and animations), so there's not much to judge by. Uploading was a pain too. But Japan's a big market, so it might be worth it.

How are you being paid? Paypal works? I know japanese and I could submit to them but I always thought they don't need foreigners anyway and I was too lazy to check the website.

Glad to hear that people are having big sales again! I never had one but I'm close to 100 downloads so I'm hoping I'm not far from a sale like that. Also, I'm seeing an increase in sales. Today I had a sales record on SS! So yep, good times for SS contributors!

How are your files chosen to appear there? According to sales or...?

My earnings doubled compared to February, because the number of pics in my portfolio also doubled. SS and Fotolia make half of the income. 123RF, Deposit and Canstock are so-so. Dreamstime is a huge disappointment. As a beginner, I can say this is the first month when I'm seeing results and I finally feel encouraged to work more.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Model Release Query
« on: April 01, 2013, 02:46 »
In my experience, iStock is the only agency that requires you to upload a new release for each shoot.  All the others I've dealt with are comfortable with having one release on file per model.  Be aware that you should have a release for each shoot to protect yourself legally, whether or not the agency requires it.

Wow...thanks for that info! I thought we need a new release for each shoot. You saved me from lots of useless work. I'm sure I'm not going to have any legal problems since I'm my only model ( hopefully I won't sue myself  ;D )

Actually, I just had 3 sales, and it's Saturday! I NEVER had weekend sales on SS. Strange...but can't complain!  ;D

Shutterstock.com / How often do you get single downloads?
« on: March 28, 2013, 19:35 »
My SS sales are increasing together with my portfolio, so no problems here. But despite lots of sales, I didn't get any single downloads until now. I'm getting a lot of single downloads even on websites where I sell 10 times less pictures compared to SS. So I was wondering, how often do you guys get such sales? Or is there any secret I should know concerning this? Are there certain subjects that tend to sell more as single downloads?

88
Not sure why so many people have voted for SS.   There are other places I'd much rather send buyers to  where my RPD is much more than at SS. The fact that so many people make more money there than anywere else means that they are taking customers away from places that pay us more per download. DT give me an RPD of 2 or 3 times more than SS for instance.

Happy for you but for example, DT doesn't sell at all for me. For every 50 sales on SS I have 1-2 sales on DT...so tell me, why would I vote for it? Also, the discussion was about the most contributor friendly agency, and DT is on the top of my black list. Their stupid rejections drive me crazy...

89
I made the most money on Canstock but I voted for Shutterstock here. I just like their professionalism and they also sell a lot of pictures. There are a few parts I still don't like about them but life can't be entirely pink.

Really?   :o
Was that for a month or over an extended period of time?

If someone has 1000 images on Canstock and 50 on SS that might work (no suggestion that is the actual case here)

The difference between the two websites is around 100 files. I made more on Canstock because I keep selling files for big prices, while my sales on SS are mostly 0.25 dollars sales. So even if I had 70 sales on SS, I made more on Canstock with just 10 sales. 3 months passed and SS is still not surpassing the amount that I made on Canstock. Not sure if the situation will remain like this but I can't complain at the moment  :D

Yeah, they rejected an image which was accepted even by SS and Dreamstime. DREAMSTIME! The masters of rejections!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Contacting Pond5
« on: March 26, 2013, 08:45 »
I uploaded my model releases and added them to each video with the "attach release" option. It shows up in the releases page that they were attached several times so I guess it was successful, but when I look at those videos it's still written "Model Released: No". Someone suggested that the website is slow but more than a month passed and it's still like this...

And lately yet another problem appeared. When I click on my username, my portfolio is empty! My files are still there when I look at the uploads page and I can find them in the search results as well, but nothing appears if I click on my name. It's frustrating because I'm thinking that if a buyer wants to see more of my videos, I'm going to lose some potential sales because of this...

I contacted Pond5 regarding both problems but no answer...

123RF / Re: How is your sales?
« on: March 26, 2013, 08:26 »
I'm starting to like this website. My sales were 0 for months, to the point that I wasn't submitting anything anymore and I wanted to delete my account. And then I made one final effort and I uploaded all the files that I didn't want to upload for a while. Then I had my  first sale one week ago. Three more sales followed ( and 2 of them were credit sales ). So I'm liking the situation right now. I'm happy with 0.80 sales considering I mostly get 0.25 - 0.30 sales on other websites.

General Stock Discussion / Contacting Pond5

Is there a way to have your problems solved with this website? I've been having some problems with my model releases for ages. Had no luck in asking on their forum and here. So I emailed both contact and the curator that accepted my files. Still no answer.

General - Stock Video / Fotolia footage subscription sales
« on: March 23, 2013, 09:11 »
I'm selling a lot of subscription footage on Fotolia lately. I sold like 5 this month. I'm annoyed to get only a dollar for each sale and I know I have an option to to take my files out of the subs program, but I don't know what to do. I have the same files on SS and Pond5 and NEVER had a sale. So I'm thinking they are selling on Fotolia because they're cheap. If I take them out of the subs program and they'll have the normal price maybe they won't sell even there. So in that case 1 dollar is better than 0...

Please tell me your opinions! Should I leave them like this or not?

97
Mainly Europe and USA. I never thought I'll sell something in Asia, especially Japan, but I just did! Yes, it was a picture related to the japanese language, but still! I thought they don't even bother to check foreign websites.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Acceptance at Alamy
« on: March 18, 2013, 18:20 »
I had two rejections for that reason, and they were totally right. The images were too small and the truth is *hides* I resized them a bit so they would fit the requirements. When viewed at 100% they totally lacked details and sharpness. But I never ever had any other rejections, even for pictures that really sucked! ( and believe me, I have quite a few crappy pics since when I was just starting microstock ). I suggest you try again, you'll definitely be accepted.

A more important question than "how difficult is it to be accepted at Alamy" should be "how many sales should I expect from Alamy". I've yet to have a sale there, and I've been a member for 6 months or so  ( portfolio has around 200 pictures )

99
The whole Istock fiasco happened when I was just trying to get accepted. Not a good way to start this business ><

But anyway, leaving aside the Google problem, Im interested if its still worth it to get accepted there. I know theyre not what they used to be, but how much did the earnings actually drop? People say their sales decreased dramatically, but I dont know what to believe. They dropped to 0 or does it still qualify at least as a middle tier website? Or at least as a low earner?

If the earnings, as low as they are, would surpass let's say Envato, I'm thinking it would still be worth submitting to them.

Please keep your answers on topic. I know everyone is annoyed about this website, but I read all your opinions in other threads. Im only interested in what I asked.

I wish you good luck!  I'm interested in your evolution since we're from the same country, we're both new in this business and our style is also a bit similar ( you seem to be a mountain lover like me  ;D )
