Some time ago all vector contributors were set at the 20% level. That means RC's have become pretty much irrelevant.

Did I miss this? When did this happen? Is this an ironic comment relating to the prevalence of subs, or is it purporting to be true? ( which it isn't)

It's not a joke, check the illustrator tab:

http://www.istockphoto.com/help/sell-stock/rate-schedule

There were a few changes for illustrators in July 2013, the 20% change was one of them. The newsletter said:

"Upload Limit Increases

We have raised upload limits for illustrations and you can now submit 999 files per week.

Vector Royalty Rate Increases

We have increased the non-Exclusive royalty rates to a flat 20% royalty (formerly 15%-20% depending on your sales). We have also raised the base Exclusive royalty rate from 25% up to 30%."

OK, yes, you are talking non-exclusive, I misunderstood.

Being ultra fussy I can see the point where the vertical lines of the window go into the curve of the top of the window, there is an anchor point there and I would want to just pull the arm of that anchor point up vertically, holding down Shift to constrain it, so you get a perfectly smooth transition into the curve.

Does having guns in the White House with the president make him safer?
Yay! Perfect.  You've  hit nail on the head. Is anyone in the White House allowed guns other than the people guarding the president? Why do you think that is? Wouldn't  he be safer if everyone was armed? Well obviously not. It sounds rediculous. If it's good enough for the president, why not your children (as you are fond of saying)

I you agree to pay for some armed Secret Service agents to guard my house, I will happily give up my guns.

I can't really imagine what it's like to live somewhere where those are the only two options that would make you feel safe in your own home.

Pretty sure violent criminals can attack anyone, anywhere. The question is whether you want to be a victim or not.

I'm still waiting for you to tell me which country it is that gives a burglar more rights than a homeowner.

You can't fix stupid. Seems like these kids that are going in and shooting up schools are getting the guns right from within their own homes. Their parents buy them, and in their infinite wisdom, don't bother to lock them up so the kids can't get a hold of them. Instead, they seem proud of their arsenal, and instill that pride in their children.

Here's a little video showing a few intelligent gun owners

What amazes me is that someone can put a positive spin on having armed police in a school.

Which country is that then?

Yes and in many European countries, when a burglar comes through the window waving a gun,  you are supposed to use harsh language against his gun. God forbid if you should hit him over the head with something. He can then sue YOU for grevious bodily harm.

No matter how one twist and turn this question in the end nobody wins.

This is, of course, nonsense. You are allowed to use reasonable force in such a situation .

I've knocked this out very quickly, just to try and show what I mean, amending the right hand and arm, not as accurately as I might like, but just to give a rough idea.

Much better, the shoulder is a big improvement. If you Google 'Dancers hands' you'll see some great shapes that dancers hands make. You've improved the illustration but the hands still don't look convincing to me, not helped by the fact the wrists are thicker than the elbow, which adds to the slightly clumsy look in that area.

General Stock Discussion / Re: 'Crisis of Proliferation'
« on: October 07, 2015, 01:25 »
That's what happened to the App market in the past few years.

They have it way worst, because a good image can take less than 30 minute to produce, while a good app takes weeks or months. Now that everyone wants apps for free, many categories have become nearly valueless.

Being in both sectors, I can tell you guys that I make way more money selling images than apps and they take up less of my time. SS alone doubles what I make in the App Store.

I'm sure I read recently that only the top 10 selling Apps in the Apple App Store make any money.

General Stock Discussion / 'Crisis of Proliferation'
« on: October 06, 2015, 04:04 »
I read an interesting little article by Stuart Maconie ( UK writer and DJ) in last weeks Waitrose magazine (upmarket UK supermarket), about a well known French academic  called Jacques Attali. He wrote a book in 1977 called "Noise: The political economy of music" where he predicted a future where there would be so much music and it would be so easily available that it would cease to have any value. He called it the coming 'Crisis of Proliferation'. Maconie then went on to describe the current situation in the music business, looking back to the 1970's where a record in the charts could sell millions and provide a decent pension plan, and comparing that with a successful band nowadays who, despite worldwide acclaim were struggling to buy a one bed flat in London.
Ring any bells anyone ? Sounds much the same with the image industry.

The chef looks better because his hands are less visible. The ballerina seems to have paddles instead of hands, dancers hands often make very elegant shapes, I'd work on those personally. ( and the shoulder)

"and I was shocked because my photos never displayed even when I write the whole title of the photo !"

You can't search by title on iStock.

"once you're born in the sh-it that's your natural environment."

That is a pretty patronising first world comment.

Depends on the customer, the usage, the number and the complexity of the icons. I usually ask for 10 to 30 EUR per icon including exclusive rights.

But if I can manage to draw 25-30 icons on one topic, I rather sell the complete set on the agencies
(vector icons, that is) and earn a lot more
10 for an exclusive custom icon? That is absurdly cheap, really.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: WHEN They Drop Exclusivity
« on: February 11, 2015, 10:08 »
I'm only repeating what they told me. I was thinking that a benefit of giving up exclusivity, should such a time come, would be having cheaper files.
Whereas you're stuck in the double whammy of being possibly undercut, unless most of your work is niche, and getting less money from each sale.
So - do you even get indie rates on subs they're selling at exclusive prices?
So there's a crucial calculation about how much more you'll get elsewhere making up.

But credit sales are shrinking so fast for most people on iS that it could very soon be totally moot.

I see the problems affecting IS to a greater or lesser degree everywhere in micro stock. Too many files, too many of them accepted for no reason other than to say 'we have x million files' , regardless of their quality or use. I'm putting all my effort back into freelancing with IS income as useful additional income, not the other way round as it was a few years back.

It's also worth noting that anyone who gives up exclusivity will find that their current files will all stay at the 3 credit price point, not drop down to 1 credit, as I assumed would happen. Files uploaded after giving up exclusivity will sell at 1 credit, but not existing files.

So you can have your cake and eat it. At least for the moment (I expect they will fix this bug before the end of the century). But I wonder what will happen when the realise what they've done and demand the overpayments back?

No, it's planned this way, I asked Contributor Relations.
Only files uploaded after giving up exclusivity will be 1 credit, old ones remain at 3.

My money disappeared as well. No response to my message from iStock up to now. I am about to close my account...
Why would you need to close your account? All the information is widely available at IS about the payment situation, in FAQs , forum posts and emails to members. Given iS track record for past changes they seem to have handled this quite well.

All of a sudden 112$ were deducted from my account, not all money gone only 112$!
Am I only one?

That presumably is the amount you earned from the last payout request on 21st January , to the end of the January. That money has been taken from your account ( and to be fair to IS all this information has been widely noted in FAQs on the site) and will be paid on the 25th February by whatever method you have told IS you want to be paid.
All your February money will accumulate until the end of February, and you will be paid all of Februarys money on 25th March, and so one, month on month.
