.. and why I believe no agency deserves our undivided support. If they become too successful and powerful, they will screw us. We would be much better off with several smaller agencies, if one slashes royalties, it's not too painful to leave them.

I just added a heart on that one!

What a fun post with so many amusing comments from everyone!  ;D

Sympathies on the loss of the business.  My 2c would be to keep the relationship open and bide your time.. do-it-for-free photographers can often have short life spans and you may be back in business when that happens.

I'm not on the bridge program.

And thats yet another thing I dont find understandable!  Why would one company (related under the same ownership) cannibalize the other by a major difference in rate? And not extend rate parity to ALL contributors to both the companies?

One may argue based upon individual experience ... but I have had the greatest respect for Shutterstock in the way they have done business - both by their success of the sub model (the only company to generate acceptable/ good volume sales) - and in their contributor-friendly approach to the business.

But THIS - the mind-boggling Bigstock strategy - I just dont get it!!   ???

General Stock Discussion / My BIG gripe with Bigstockphoto ..
« on: January 29, 2014, 04:09 »
.. is the ridiculous RPD that makes it worthless for me to upload to them anymore!

I honestly preferred the older days when you got fewer downloads but at rates that held a modicum of respectability.

With the change I gained nothing.  My overall revenues did not go up year on year, and, to add insult to injury, the RPD has fallen flat on its face.  Cant understand, what kind of a strategy is that!!?!  >:(

GLStock / Re: Sudden rise of sales
« on: January 24, 2014, 06:41 »
Closed my account yesterday and got the 13$ I made in 12 months paid out. That was kind of them.

I had submitted my backlog of 500 images and noticed about 150 rejections for LCV. Images selling fine on Shutterstock and elsewhere.

After 5 sales in one year of 'trying them out', that was kind of the straw.

Yes, I had similar experience when I was submitting to GL about a year ago.  Too many rejections overall compared to other agencies AND including content that was selling at least reasonably well on other sites.  In frustration I stopped uploading for many months.  However more recently I'v started uploading again.. mainly because they have a more fair trade approach to contributors in commissions, and whatever (little or more) sales one makes there only add some value.  I think they're a good team who respect contributors, and contributor support will only strengthen their marketing in a positive way in the longer run.  For the moment they sell little (at least my stuff).  But we need agencies like them to succeed more and more.  Just my 2c  :)

Yep, its a bit complicated to come up with a fair price  ;D

For one thing, other contributors are in a fairly wide range of pricing. On another point, I couldn't really find EL type licensing option which leads one to believe that a buyer has fairly liberal usage rights - thus price should be on higher side.

It also seems that Pond5 sells footage a lot more than images at the moment.  Does a lower expectation of sales volume  justify higher pricing? I tend to think so.

And the final push - it has to be said - microstock is eating itself down to the bone with such miserable rates at many (most) agencies that its nearly not worth the effort of shooting, processing, keywording and uploading images any more - not too much longer anyway if this trend continues ...

Here then is an opportunity to price to more decent levels, and to try get a fair return on the creativity and work involved in the production of microstock images.  Kudos to Pond5 for that !! and I hope more agencies follow a reversal of the rate-dumping that's become pretty rampant at the moment.  Instead of chasing rates DOWN there's a need for the agencies to start building rates back up based on their individual market strengths and content style/ quality, whatever!  So that they can make money easier and, just as importantly, contributors can get a much more fairer return.

Plus.. the subscription model needs to die - unless it can be supported with huge (and I mean really HUGE) volume of sales. Or at least the contributors should have an opt out option on it.

157
Sounds easy enough now that you explain it :) Thanks very much.

General Stock Discussion / Setting the image price on Pond5 ?
« on: January 23, 2014, 06:04 »
Just starting with Pond5 and finding life somewhat confusing at the moment  ???

How (and HOW exactly) does one set the price of an image?  The Upload section has a Price box with a default $ 1 already featuring in it.  What exactly does that mean? What size is that for? How does it influence all other sizes/ licenses of the image?

Any help much appreciated  ;D

123RF / Re: New Limited Extended License?
« on: January 16, 2014, 18:55 »

We need downloadable CSV format sales and earnings data so we can keep track of things.

Fully support that among all the other great points made with this post!    Its frustrating trying to decipher obscure figures that one sees more and more often it seems...  :(

While they get downloads, I find them frequently disappointing on RPD - my port has certainly seen better days on 123RF!

General Stock Discussion / Question on copyright.
« on: December 21, 2013, 15:17 »
The Trevi fountain in Rome or a Town Hall on an island in Scandinavia - can these be commercially featured in a photographer's (non-editorial) stock port?  Or are there specific restrictions/ and copyright issues to clarify with regards to landmarks, monuments, buildings etc?

Shutterstock (most helpfully) posts a list of sites and locations where specific restrictions apply.  However I imagine that this list cant be fully exhaustive - thus bringing back the question - how does one know which locations may be copyright protected.  Are there any general guidelines one can follow?

Dreamstime.com / Re: New to DT, question about sales
« on: December 20, 2013, 08:21 »
Very much agree with Dan and Lisa - DT sales climb with time and I've had 3 (out of last 6) months with BME or near BME sales.  In months with lower sales its usually the new stuff or more of sub sales which drag down the numbers. If only Subs didn't exist, this would be my dream site (no pun intended) ;D

123RF / Re: December payment?
« on: December 20, 2013, 08:11 »
I got paid 13th December (Paypal) so I think the payment date problem in sporadic and not across the board.  However RPD/ income on 123RF has declined significantly for me in most recent months so not happy with overall performance.. its like the more you upload the less you make on RPD.   ???

Pity.. when I first started with 123RF few years ago I was so optimistic about this site!

General Stock Discussion / Its been so long that I forgot ...
« on: December 08, 2013, 09:15 »
Anyone know, when exactly does Alamy transfer payments?   ??? I have cleared funds over the 75 criteria that are showing as Paid 11/2013. But no money to Paypal yet. Its been so long since last payment that I forgot their transfer schedule...  my sales there plummeted some months ago and I more or less stopped new uploads there.

168
During the course of this year I've more or less stopped new uploads to,

IS, GL, Alamy, Veer, Bigstock - reasons were either related to their operating policies or dire lack of sales (or both).

In the bright New Year my focus will be to try and spot agencies with fresh and innovative marketing approaches - that go beyond dumping rates as fast as possible to sub levels and thereby progressively destroying the entire income structure.  I dont know if I'll find any - but, one day, who knows!  Or perhaps one of the above existing ones will come back on.  One lives in hope of better things I guess  ;)

169
Mixed month leaning to the negative side:

SS and DT (usually 2 of my best) both underperformed to varying degrees.  FT did ok with one very good week.  PD about average. 123 RF steady on sales (average-ish month) but the RPD impacts performance and not in a healthy way. Bigstock no increase and RPD is dismal. DP new account with some sales almost daily but again too sub driven for sales satisfaction. Canstock poor. Veer, GL, Alamy nothing or close to nothing. IS was ok relative to reduced portfolio and almost no new uploads this year.

All in all - I'm still running hard but staying in the same spot - as I upload away without an appreciable return in sales to justify the effort.  ::)  Have therefore started to rationalize my time a bit more as far as new uploads to some of the regularly low performing sites.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Stockbo
« on: November 30, 2013, 07:18 »
Received an acceptance email as well.

1.  Refreshing to see that pricing and commission structure is not overly defensive as it completely avoids the ridiculous sub. commissions of so many other sites.

2. Interesting to note from the guideline their preference for more natural shots versus the studio isolates so common in microstock.

Two great positives there - the clear market approach and a fair, more logical pricing and commission (esp on subscription packages) :)

Wishing them great luck in the marketplace.

DepositPhotos / Re: Deposit Photos Extended Licence $2.64!!!!!!
« on: November 28, 2013, 00:27 »
On a related note.. Subscription sales are the bane (read that as - a cause of great distress and annoyance) of the current day microstock business - unless backed by huge volumes as in case of Shuttertock.  All other sites - DP included - are simply diluting contributor returns to untenable levels and undermining the viability of this business.  But DP is not alone unfortunately. Similar trend on so many other sites as well !

General Stock Discussion / Veer sales - am I the only one?
« on: November 26, 2013, 07:07 »
Am I the only one or is someone else seeing a drop (with a capital D) in sales at Veer?

While they've never been a high performer for me, however in recent months there seems to be a pretty noticeable slack off in downloads, and also the occasional better -rated downloads seem to have vanished.  Just wondering is it it just me.. or is this a trend that others have been noticing as well..  :-\

175
One, had to contact them because the payout wasn't on time. Got that rectified and then discovered I was charged $5 in Paypal fees. I get all my royalties from agencies via Paypal and have *never* been charged a fee until now. The initial response from support sounded a lot like "Too bad, *bleep off*" so I'm wondering if I'm alone on this?

Cant remember being charged Paypal fees by 123RF.  Maybe its an error and they will fix that.
